Hi, Thanks for Hanging Out!
In this video, I'll show you how I go about Fabricating a Trailer Cage.
My neighbour and I took down an old fence and the mesh was perfect to recycle into this project. A few other bits and pieces and I've made myself a handy and Removeable Trailer Cage. This fits a 1.8m x 1.2m or 6'x4' trailer and is 750mm or 54" in tall.
In this project I tried Spray Painting with a compressed air spray gun for the first time. It was a cheap gun to try my hand at it first and overall I was really pleased with the results, plus it was way quicker than using cans and far less painful for my index finger 😀. A good learning experience and I'm sure I'll be better next time around.

Hi, Thanks for Hanging Out. In this video, I'll show you how I make a removable Trailer Cage from some steel and re-used fence panel mesh. I tried spray painting with a compressed air spray gun for the first time, which was a great learning experience. It made painting faster, but I need a bit of practice, let me know any tips you have for a good finish, I'd appreciate it 😀. Nice job looks good i think it might needs more framing for strength once you tie down the load the frame can bend but overall I've learnt from your video cheers for sharing..

Howdy, thanks for watching and the comment, and yes, you're right this frame is not particularly strong and I knew that building it, most times I can tie down to the trailer still and avoid too much pressure on the frame. Glad to hear you got something out of watching, that's fantastic. Cheers 😀

This is great, really helpful! You mentioned right at the end that an upgrade to this might be to make sleeves for the (side?) panel legs to fit into for greater stability. I have a trailer like yours that doesnt have ready made square holes in the corners, so I'm wondering how you would tackle adding these sleeves (I think you called them 'pockets')? I've been trying to get my head around how to do this with mine, and the front end of the panels looks easy but at the gate end of the side panels I have bolts welded in to the frame (that then have wingnuts to hold the drop-gate closed - looks like yours has something similar). Looking forward to hearing your thoughts :)

Howdy, thanks for watching and for leaving a comment, that's very much appreciated 😁. I had the same issue as you and in a previous video I changed the bolts & wingnuts over to swivel latches, which shifted the bolt further out and gave me the clearance to add sleeves if I wanted to. It would then be a case of trimming the corners of the sides to fit the sleeves, extend the vertical steel on the cage sides to slide into these sleeves and use a bolt to secure it all. If you're keen to add the sleeves, it would be worthwhile changing the bolts over to latches (if you have the room) because it's a fairly simple job in comparison, it means you won't ever lose a wingnut, and can't over tighten them to the point of needing another tool to loosen them, and you get the room you need to add the sleeves, win win win! Great job Hally. Just curious though, did you look at arranging angle iron so you could weld mesh inside trailer. So mesh could push against structure of frame, to help integrity of cage if fully loaded.

I did think about that and the main reason for going the way I did was to make a smoother side on the inside, so hopefully pulling brush and things like that out would be easier. Whether it makes a lot of difference or not I don't know, but the stronger way to go would be to flip it around. Cheers. 😀

You often weld without your gloves, do you get many burns, both UV and spatter?

Hi there, I very rarely weld without gloves, I can't remember why I didn't have them on in this instance, but I do remember getting sunburn on the back of my hand from the UV, I won't be doing that again soon 😀. Thanks for watching, cheers.

Where them tube bits from called?

The short pieces of Tube I used for the hinges are cut from a longer piece of 20mm (or roughly 3/4") tube. The Long Nuts I used to make the "T" Handles that hold the top support in place are called Coupling Nuts. I hope that helps. Thanks for stopping by and watching, cheers. 😀

Hey mate, great video. What type/grade of steel was the frame and mesh? What prep did you have to do to to each of these prior to welding?

Hi CD, thanks for dropping a comment, appreciate it. This was made from Mild Steel, nothing special, all I did for the weld prep was grind off the Mill Scale and paint prep was clean it well with a wire wheel, and wax & grease remover. Cheers. 😀
