Hello and welcome to my channel. My name is Cliff and I'm a gem cutter from Australia. In this video watch me facet one of the world's most spectacular gems the "Cleopatra's Eye". The is a legendary gem design, and is well known within faceting circles. The gem is rarely seen faceted, as it is a difficult design to execute. I hope one day that all gem cutters get the chance to facet this wonderful gem. Best Wishes Cliff.

@VintageTimeGems
@VintageTimeGems 4 года назад
Thanks Wayne. Not sure if I would sell it as some many hours were put into faceting it. It's a labor of love, and it not likely that I'll faceting too many of these designs in my life. However, I should consider selling some of these gems as mostly they sit around. My wife has plenty of gems. Cheers Cliff

Hello Cliff from a Canadian fan. I just found your site, and am very impressed. I an very new to gem cutting...have yet to purchase a machine, but am learning and researching every day. What machine would you recommend for cutting? Do you know anything about the Sri Lankan machine with the hand held tri-footed device? Recommend it or not? Regards, Jason

And thank you for posting this.
@VintageTimeGems
@VintageTimeGems 4 года назад
Thanks Tam. I would invest in GCS.I think suck a gem deserves a material with a high IR. Zircon would be good, but you would need a huge piece. Not likely to facet this in Sapphire as it would be too dark, and I can't afford a piece of $20,000 plus rough to facet it anyway. This design works will in a lighter color. Dark read and blue would not work on this design. Regards Cliff

This is absolutely GORGEOUS, Cliff! I've actually just recently found your channel, and you alone have totally sold me on getting into gem cutting, I just had two questions. First, can you recommend any resources for the total beginner as far as reading goes - there's not really a gemcutting group in my area - so I'm not just flailing around stupidly in a few months when I get my first machine and a few dozen quartz stones to practice on? Secondly, do you smith/cast your own jewelry for the gems you make, or do you just keep them loose to appreciate the cuts you've done?

I know absolutely nothing about gems, or how to cut and polish them. I hit on this video by accident, and found it fascinating to watch. The final product is magnificent, even to my total ignoramus eye. But I have a question: the cutting and polishing seems to all be done using a diamond sander. However, my understanding is that even the ancient Egyptians had gem cutting and polishing capability. I also understand that diamond cutters and polishers weren't invented until about 100 years ago. So how was cutting and polishing done before the invention of diamond tools?
