I agree 100%! I've been market farming for almost 10 years! I'm an older guy but I'm still learning from Curtis! I have fine-tuned my business and I'm making a lot more money because of his videos! This is one of the few youtube channels worth subscribing to if you want to get into farming!

Really appreciate you taking the time to make this video when you were already stressed about making it to the market on time and having everything set up. Amazing display too. Lots of things I caught that you didn't mention that I want to emulate such as hiding all of the ugly wizardry (scales, float, bags, twist ties, other gear, etc.) behind your display so it's not visible. Makes for a really clean display. All of our stuff is set up on a back table behind our display table, which doesn't look as nice. Gonna do this your way soon!

Urban Farmer---- My main concerns with what it is that you do requires continuous attention & dedication. I love to do some of the similar garden endeavors such as yourself. But, having lost my health due to what basically was living as a workaholic life style, I've been forced to adjust into another pursuit........ I just wanted to let u know that your incredibly consistent & u love what u do & I couldn't be more blessed watching your videos. I wish u continued success. I personally just wished I'd of realized that my family needed me more than the money I made & personal enjoyment I received from working as I see u do. U can't get those days/hours back! Even as I replace the void of doing, with your videos I'm now happy to have that family time but @ a very high cost. Take time to be family fruitful & then multiply......lol Be blessed always. (Florida).

Just a suggestion, check with a local pharmacy, here they get some meds in that require cooling and have loads of freezer paks they can't get rid of. They last about 5 years.

Back when I did farmers markets there was a lot of faking it. More than half the vendors went to a local Amish produce auction and then resold it lying that they were farmers. Obviously there was no verification. I bitched about this for six years then finally left.

its amazing how well these tactics work. For me its a great way to sell at a smaller wed market when I normally dont have as much product ready. Layout is crucial for the appearance of abundance. Samples help a bit as well :)
@patriciaalber3219
@patriciaalber3219 7 лет назад
If we give samples at our market we have to provide an elaborate hand washing station. And if we use a knife to cut samples we have to get a certificate from the health department.
@brandontheis15
@brandontheis15 7 лет назад
We dont normally give out samples but - we were introducing hmong red cucumbers and they just sat there - a couple of people had commented that they thought our cucs were rotten ( they had never seen anything but green cucs) - so I said to hell with it , what can they do, just tell me not to or ask me to leave the market - so I peeled and sliced one up and you could smell the cucumber up and down the walkway - had 4 or 5 people try a sample and we sold over 60 ish of them in about 1/2 hour - sold the rest by markets end. Im not sure If "i can" do samples, but no one complained and even the market manager came over and tasted them - so I have been doing cuc samples everytime I go. And it doesnt hurt that the big reseller thats across from us carves up water melons to all the vendors. Its a cool market so far, little, but a pretty laid back one.

Where do you get the packaging supplies such as the green pint/quart containers, bags, etc? I imagine they are slightly pricey. most of the farm stands around here pack items into the containers then dump your choice into a brown bag and keep the container.

@Sabrina-wn6ey
@Sabrina-wn6ey 6 лет назад
I bet she outgrew that tote by now; so bitter sweet how fast they grow. I put my little ones in a pack and play in the yard while I worked. Not trying to give your wife any ideas or anything LOL Now they are 4 and 7 so I put them to work in the garden. It has really helped encourage them to eat more vegetables too. My daughter loves picking cherry and yellow pear tomatoes right off the vine and eat them. And because I grow it myself I know it is chemical free non-gmo organic produce.

My question is why do you need to keep up with the values of what you trade/barter? We dont normally track that, even though Square now has that feature, so it would be easy for us to do. Am I missing something?

@ruthven78 7 лет назад
I wouldnt call that faking it, you still have the product with you, just not all neatly packaged. I know quite a few market vendors who do it that way so they can haul more product an I actually like the pint containers more spread out, easier to see and grab

This almost sounds like a better method as opposed to prepackaging, with minimal amounts of packaging wasted on produce that doesn't sell - at least for a new person who is just getting into the market. I assume since you are doing this at the market you would have to forget your signature labels, or do you print a stack in advance?
@waltlars3687
@waltlars3687 7 лет назад
Shawn as long as you constant replace sold inventory a example would be radises You just sold your last bag of radishes and havent bagged up any more a person looking for radises walks past your table to a vender that had radises and other items on His shopping list You have lost the radishs sale and what ever else he baught at the next vender
@yelir8970
@yelir8970 7 лет назад
Good point, if for example Curtis was sold out of bags of salad mix, but had more in the container, there is a chance of loosing a sale, and violating the phrase "Pile it high and watch it fly." I suppose the method I suggested would work if you had either a two person team, or at a market where customers were in and out.
@waltlars3687
@waltlars3687 7 лет назад
Shawn there is the idea of haveing more product in the cooler and reduceing spoilage notice how Curtis used a smaller table witch is the best of both schools of thought " the Pile them High and watch them fly " and a smaller foot print the only down side I see is the time bagging on the fly is time missed talking to people walking by getting them to stop at Your booth But then there is the image of selling so much that the seller is so sucessful that He has to bag up more
@yelir8970

Thanks Walt, this concept has many facets where we can spin "What if's" all day long weighing the pros and cons to this process, the only thing to do is try it out and see what works,
