You got them boulder shoulders with extra boulders! Exactly what I'm looking for, as I have a neck that makes giraffes look short. Farmers walks also give me runners high haha
This is the most helpful video on this topic that I have ever seen. Especially appreciate the turn instruction as I see now how I can make those turns better. Many thanks.
Wow... never seen anyone take the trouble to teach the turn. Thank you. One question after watching this vid and the one you did on the yoke carry... if I could pick one to do for more upper body strength, which should I go with?
I started lifting and strength training 12 weeks ago and I just found your channel a week ago. I'm truly addicted and want to learn from you as much as possible. I wish I would've watched this before yesterday, because I did my first set of Farmer Walks with dumbbells at my gym and felt something pop near my AC Joint. Going to get it checked out tonight. I know now that I shouldn't have let my shoulders drop and flex my traps while walking.. I should've kept my shoulders back and chest high. I just hope that it's a level 1 or 2 AC Joint injury and that I will heal 100%. I really want to start doing Strongman Training and this took the wind out of my sails. I know you have been through some bad injuries and that inspires me.. Thank you for the great channel!
that tip for walking quietly/gently works miracles. this tip also applies to running and jogging. don't slap your feet, imagine you're barefoot and place your feet softly.
Farmer's Walks, strongman movements and heavy deadlifts man. They work like magic. Have you ever seen a serious strongman competitor who didn't have huge traps? It works for everyone. Just gotta put in the work my friend!
great info. i thought i knew everything about farmers walk, but you taught me something and i can't wait to try it. i already knew and agree with every other fact you said, but i never thought of cancelling momentum around the turns by opposing the handles. fantastic idea! i'm actually excited. 54 years old, can carry 210 in each hand for 25 feet out, turn, 25 feet return, 420 total. the only thing you didn't mention was romanian grip. i use it because i use triceps bars for my farmers walk. a cheap way out of buying fw handles. much better than dumbells. if you're reading this and like the idea, don't get the threaded handles. get the smooth handles and use spring clamps. it will save you time and aggravation during your workout. but romanian grip isn't possible with thick handles. you won't be able to reach and overlap your thumbs with your fingers. it takes a while to toughen the thumbs, but it's well worth it. probably get an extra 20 pounds in each hand with romanian grip. i learned it from a tommy kono seminar at york barbell when they inducted bill kazmeir into the strongman hall of fame. great event. kono is a genius. you may also like, magnus samuelson says to tighten the traps into an actual shrug to free up the legs. now i've tried it, but i don't really like it. i like my arms to just hang off my shoulders like ropes. this way i can put more of my mind into my grip, and let hip strength drive me. i'm sure it all has to do with body types. anyway, kudos my friend, great video. i will check you out often. maybe sometime i'll send you some outdoor workout video.
I want start incorporating Farmer Walks into my training now. Should I use these as a secondary type exercise on deadlift days or would that be too taxing on my CNS for one day? Thanks for all the content you crank out. It is greatly appreciated.
Brian, thank you for doing these videos. I feel like you're going to be one of the most sought after coaches in the near future. Could you please elaborate on exactly how to breathe and brace during the farmer's walk. Breathing and bracing has added exponential gains to all of my other lifts. But here we are walking, we must breathe at some point, right? I've been breathing and bracing while picking up the implements. Then breathing normally while walking, bracing as much as possible. Am I doing it wrong?
Thank you so much for uploading this Brian, I can't tell you how long I've been waiting for this 'How To' Video lol! Farmers Walk is one of my favourite workouts and this is going to help me a ton. Thanks again brother!
Awesome vids man, appreciate all the effort and positive energy. Turned up the frequency and intensity of my farmer's walks. Graduated from my gym's biggest dumbells/kettlebells to a heavy-loaded trap bar for more carry weight. Keep the vids coming
This is the kind of attention to detail that separates the champs from the also- rans. Looked like you forgot what sport you were doing and went for side choke on the equipment there for a second..
Brian, New subscriber great channel...! Question: Can you build decent leg size with just specializing in farmers carries? Or do you need to add in some form of front or back squats? I was thinking of the following: Monday: Heavy short distance Tuesday: off Wednesday: lite long distance Thursday: off Friday: medium / medium distance Repeat... Would I need to add any dead lifts or is this enough hip hinging? Not a strongman just enjoy all the benifits of the loaded carries. Many thanks....and Happy New Year. Best regards, Eric
I totally understand man but make the most of what you have. I didn't have access until about 2 years ago when I decided to buy my own. But i feel your pain brother!
thank you a lot your videos always so useful I appreciated please I have a question what about yoke walk is farmer walk is enough or both of them should be in my training program and also what a bout shrugs too? thank you So much
Another great video as always! I just had a really random question though! I want to use my trap bar for farmers walks. My max on the trap bar deadlift is 570. I'm aiming for total body HYPERTROPHY, not strength nor endurance etc...what percent of my 1rm (570lbs) should I start with..I'm aiming for 3 sets of 30 yard walks..my endurance is okay but I just want to put on size...thanks!
Dude i just stumbled on your channel the other day and i"m in love. you are awesome to watch, articulate and really seem to cover all the questions i have. Keep killing it man!
One of our competitions this year the farmer's had almost 1 3/4 inch handles... good luck hook gripping that. I'd say if you can do it do it, but do it in competition only, don't sacrifice the grip training.
Very true. I have trouble with the hook grip anyway. My hands are just to small. I just opened up a gym and decided to include some strongman implements. Thought I'd get some opinions for my members. I appreciate the input.
Brain, this video has been incredibly helpful! The advice on the turn is awesome. I would have never figured that one out on my own. It's made a huge difference in my farmer's carries. Do you have a "How to Yoke Carry"? I've been working my way though your channel, but haven't seen it yet. Cheers, JK
Thank samna, but I have't made that one yet. My Strongman videos get less views than anything so I only throw them in sparingly. I wish there was more of an audience because I have a LOT to say about that kind of stuff!
+Brian Alsruhe Brian, could you explain what you mean about the sport's stigma? I didn't know it had a stigma. I thought bodybuilding had more of a stigma because of the *extreme* steroid use and unnatural looking physiques, whereas strongman was pretty respected (as functional, authentic etc.).
"Don't do that"....lol... So do you have and videos on injures and or prevention. I have been overdoing frequency on bench and deadlift (not smart...but I was getting gains). I don't have a tear yet (I think) in my biceps and the area that the pec connects to the left arm, but I feel something nasty there when I stretch. I have been doing nothing for the past week and a half, hoping for the best! lol that is the only way I know on how to combat that! Head goes body follows...lol thats a Wrestling/Jui-Jitsu thought process. And yes I know the Road Runner, my life choices are on point....for the most part!
Yea man, I made one a few weeks ago but it is more about lower back problems but it covers some basic injury stuff as well. I hope it helps you out man, and hope you feel better soon man!
Hey man, great video and awsome channel, I know this video is kind off old BUT if you could, I have kind off a "noob question" hahahaha, I split my training in 3 days (Squat Day/Bench Day/Deadlift Day) sooo, in wich day should I put the farmer's walk??? (Sorry for my realy bad english, i'm a brazilian hahahaha)
In the turn of the weight, you make it look easy with one plate. But.. what if I put more plates? Doesn't look easy to cross the outside wing over the top inside wing with a bunch of plates. Another problem is that I can't just drop the weight and grab it again in the turn because it hurts A LOT and the calluses gets worse (I would only do it in a competition). Is there any weight or distance that I should not do the turns? In my gym i have 50-60 feet of distance to walk. Thanks! And by the way.. this channel is amazing! Subscribed.
Brian, do you program your farmers on DL day? It makes sense for me, but I'm curious if there's a better day to switch it to (if one is doing grip/accessory work on one day, for example)
Man, Its almost 2am and I need to go to sleep but all I want to do is to pick some heavy shit in my hands and go with it for a walk. People would think that Im some robber or something. I think a better idea would be if I'll do it tomorrow morning. Peace
I don't have access to farmer's walks implements and my gym has a 34kg max dumbell, but I do have 2 H bars on my gym, so I load them up and use'em as if they were the implements. It works pretty well
im gonna look into making my own like you suggested, btw does bad sleep quality affect your strength progression or workouts, i feel like if you have diet in check sleep is not that major but this is coming from someone who has trouble staying asleep for more than 4-5 hours so im kinda bias
I'm in the same boat as you. I have always had trouble with sleep, but people swear it makes a huge difference so i am just going off what the proverbial "they" say
Nader Chowdhury i know it has been 11 months but i must answer. i have been working a night job for 6 momths at the start iwas good got lots more food in me and hitting prs but now its cathing up to me the lack of sleep so i belive sleep is more important then food or training.
@brianalsuhe What about knee pain/shoe selection during the farmers walk? I recently started doing farmers walks at my gym, I did them three times a week for a week and then started to do another session the next week and could barely do them because the pain in my knees. I dont know if its because my knees arent used to the farmer walks or if its my shoes i was wearing(new balance running shoes) or a combo of both. What do you recommend- Thanks
Im doing farmers walk with a hex bar. Does it make much of a difference if i drop the weight at the end, turn and pick it back up or should i keep hold of it and turn. Im worried about the heavy weight twisting my back with the turning momentum with very heavy weight
Hey brian, Im currently lifting at a commercial gym and we only have dumbbells. Is it okay to strap up to make sure im getting a longer carry or just carry till my grip dies.
Hey, man. Do you shrug your shoulders as you walk, or do you let the weights pull down on the traps (where you get that downward stretch on the traps)?
Nice shout out to Clint, I've stumbled on to his videos recently and have picked up a few things from his channel as well. It would be cool to see a RU-vid Strongman meet.
Just can't keep my eyes off your traps...BTW,Is using 1.5m bar gonna hurt my wrists cause I always feel uncomfortable when I use it.... The Gym I train don't have any srongman quipment or trap bar and the heavist dumbell is only 40kg....
It shouldn't hurt your wrist but it is going to be pretty challenging. if you have a trap bar, i would use that or maybe just make some handles of your own with straps (that go through the weight) and PVC Pipe (for the handles). Similar to the SPUD Inc traveling farmer's handle. They seem to get the job done until you can get the actual implement
Hey Brian, when I do any movement that requires a lot of grip strength (deadlift, farmer carries, dumbbell rows, etc) I notice my pinky and ring finger on my left hand seem to be the weakest link that gives out first. Is this normal? And how can I train to improve this?
That is completely normal man. Work both kind of grip. Your crush grip, like used on a barbell and pinch grip, like plate pinch holds. That is just the less used 1part of your hand so it is naturally weaker. Gotta train it and it will get better
Even though I love the perks of my commercial gym, hot tub, pools, steam room and daycare for the little one, I do miss hardcore personal owner gyms, there's like that self esteem drive to push even harder. mmm just can't come up with the words but I hope u understand what I saying... and btw ur traps are making u neck little small😉

Brian. any experience with the spud Inc farmers walk handles? I just have no place to put true farmers walk implements and the gym I go to doesn't have strong man gear at all.
