This was so informative and well explained! I've been reading and researching for months and this is the first time everything truly made sense. Thank you so much! I just stumbled across your channel today and can't wait to watch more of your videos. One question, how do you feed your babies that are in s/h? Do you let the fertilized water sit in the reservoir? I've got some in the self watering with the string but was concerned with leaving the fertilized water in the bottom. Thanks so much for this awesome video!

Hi Nicole, Thank you for making this tutorial. It is very informative & helpful. Does the kelp have any odor? I’ve stayed away from fish & seaweed additives because I grow indoors & I don’t want my home to smell like low tide.😆😳 Thanks again! Happy Growing! Jeanne

Im glad this was helpful! The Kelp brand I use doesn't smell bad actually but it doesn't store well long term and can get moldy. When it gets a bit moldy, then it's stinky. I replace it every summer. Provided it's fresh, it won't be too bad (this brand Clean Kelp at least).

Thanks Nicole for a very informative video. I think msu is a great fertilizer. I have used it. Right now I’m using Jacks spring/ summer, fall/winter fertilizer. 1/2 tsp. Per gallon. I also use calmag, and kelp . I just recently got Barrina grow lights for my Cattleya’s. They are much brighter. I like them, so I hope my Cattleya’s bloom. 🤗❤️🌹🙌

Hi 👋, I'm glad to hear your methods, as your orchids grow so well, are so healthy. What I'm a bit unsure of is fertilizing my polychilos that are in pure sphagnum ( newly being tried out by me). When I water, perhaps very weak MSU, I water from bottom up, taking pot out of the liquid when moss is moist 2/3 up & let it wick rest of way. I'm not sure if this needs to be " rinsed" ( it's so low TDS). But, now summer, more fert,...how to do? Flush right after...& moss so totally saturated...OK bc of summer temp? Clarification how you do this would be so appreciated! BTW, here's a shocker: I live in so CA, the water horrid, it smells coming out of faucet. I tested again TDS just now just 'for fun': 451.🤯. I buy RO water from the machine, for me, my birds, the orchids. !!! If you'd taste it, you'd literally gag. 😝 thanks for good video. I got some tips, helpful. 😊
@NicoleDeanna
@NicoleDeanna 2 года назад
Hi Patricia! The way you described watering from the bottom up sounds good, but I'd say that you do need to flush the pots with plain water once a month to get rid of the salt buildup. You don't need to rinse / flush every single time you water. Key to making sure it's not too wet, is to make sure the moss is airy and not too compacted when you repot the orchid. Check out my spagnum moss repot videos. You can fully saturate those and generally they will be ok 💗
@patricialux6197
@patricialux6197 2 года назад
@@NicoleDeanna thanks. It's clearer now & I feel more confident. Yes, I saw your videos repotting the LD Bear King...loose & fluffy. That's what sparked my interest in the sphagnum, and the great growth the 🤴 had! I like it, I've put several polychilos in moss.

Hi Nicole! New subscriber here. Really enjoying your channel. Do you add kelp during your orchids' blooming season? I'm going to switch to your brand and their website suggests offering kelp when plants are flowering. I would love your thoughts on whether you modify your overall feeding program during bloom time. 🙂
@NicoleDeanna
@NicoleDeanna 5 месяцев назад
I'm glad you enjoy the videos! I add kelp in the spring when the orchids are in active growth then I tend to stop by summer time. I don't add kelp while they are blooming. I actually try not to fertilize plants in bloom since they are not actively growing at that specific point. 🩷

I wish I saw this before I ordered the ro system haha but it will be good for me as well. may I ask is there a group/society in ny that I can be part of or that you are part of? i am a musician but I don't have any orchid friends...🍒

@@NicoleDeanna i already ordered it after i watched your episode but it’s ok i can benefit as well i hope. nicole can i ask you? i have a situation with one cattleya alva die hybrid. i got her in the basket and all her new growths are happening outside( she just finished with her blooms) her future is outside of her basket? and the basket smells quite bad. old pbs are covered in algae. i have watched many videos and if it was in pot and i can take it out easily and i would take a chance and just keep the newer bulbs. but the roots are entangled through the basket and i know i would lose healthy roots and i have never divided cattleya before. do you know anyone in nyc who i can bring to and guide me thru it or do it for me. i would like to learn but i also donMt want to kill my plant.

Ever notice that ppm significantly changes according to temp of water? Do you rest (when you test) at a particular temp?

I thought I had commented on this video but apparently I cancelled it instead of posting it! Your explanation makes incredible sense to me, but I've always wondered about the PPM when I'm starting with 246 ppm in my tap water! I've used filtered water because of this but I have all the goodies RickL recommended so I have PH Up and Down. Can I use that with my 246 ppm water or just keep using filtered? If prices don't start coming down I may have to stop buying water and filters altogether. :(
@NicoleDeanna
@NicoleDeanna 2 года назад
Hi Eileen! I understand, starting with 246 ppm is not the most ideal because you have less control on what sort of minerals the orchids are getting, but I think it's fine and wouldn't stress it! You can use the PH Up/ Down with your tap water. The downside with a higher PPM in your tap water is that there will mineral build up in the pots, but I think if the filters / water is getting expensive, tap water will be ok! Maybe just use filtered when you flush if you can swing it, and if you can't just stick with your tap water. The orchids will be ok! If you're able, maybe you can collect some rain water? The PPM in rain water is usually very low
