One thing I do to help stop the glass from slipping is to apply the resin to the mould before adding the glass, then using the brush without resin to spread the glass out over the bulk of the area first to tack it town. Then apply more resin with the brush starting from the centre out as normal.
Great tutorial DD, you make everything look easy, the finish looks awesome, I may try this on my be200 cockpit build, if it works I'll post it and give credit where credit is due, thanks again
Awesome video man. I have a T-45 Goshawk that I’m building up to add a 12 blade 90mm edf into and see how fast we can get it but plain foam would never hold up to those speeds. Very excited!!!!
Hi F3H, thank you for the tip on fiberglass would like to ask you about large wing jets and foam aircrafts. When using fiberglass for wings are you adding Carbon tubes for reinforcing as well for aircraft that fly fast and at high altitude.
I use 3M-77 adhesive to hold the cloth in place when applying fiber glass cloth to wood, works great. Not sure about using it on other surfaces, you would have to read the label.
I know this video was made a long time ago, but I'm trying to fiberglass my jet and I want the wings to have extra strength which is why I'm looking into fiberglass. Would one .75 OZ sheet of fiber glass be enough to strengthen it? also would it be good enough if I just used primer and then painted it or do I need the minwax stuff? Thanks for the video it was very helpful! Edit: Also what type of paint should I use if I want it to be shiny?
DJI Pantom frame is so brittle and it crack easy. Im planning to get another frame and add some strength by appying fiberglass over it. Any recommendation for materials I should use? I appreciate it.
Your Vietnam era jet fighters look incredible, or so I think that's what they are, do you have these builds on you tube as well ? once again great work
lol thanks for that.. I remember when I was a kid building plastic models in the 70s, that glue would really get you dizzy.. Thanks for the tutorial it is very helpful. I'm thinking about fiber glassing a complete sig 4 star 40.. I hope it doesn't come out too heavy Know anything about silk span and dope covering? I am wanting to learn that process..
Thanks for the video on how to fiberglass rc plane parts. But i was wondering if you would be able to do an instructional video on how to make a planes wings and wing box.
Hi, I just found your post, not sure you can still help 😀.In the beggining you show f102 delta dagger fuselage. Can you please tell me what fiberglass you used and how many layers. Also did you applied the fiberglass layer by layer let each layer to cure or you applied all layers in the same run. Thanks
Kept waiting to see how you did the compound surfaces like the windows and forward section of the nose with that 1 big single piece of cloth???? The large flat areas are simple!
Sure!, 3-4oz fiberglass cloth, cheap disposable brushes, mixing cup, two part epoxy resin like "clear-cast" you can buy at Hobbylobby or micheals. don't forget to subscribe to my channel!
Thank you for very nice instruction video , cna you let me know brand name fibre galss resin you have been used in video that not eat away foam and the fibre glass cloth . Where you can buy in harware shops, hobby shops . Thank you .
hey demon Im building an about 2-3 foot 747 I need to know what electronics to use I want it to be 3 channels (throttle elevator alieron) I also want it to be a pusher prop please help thanks
I was watching in other videos that you need to apply 4 layers of fiber glass cloth to have strength .. What so you thing? Is really necessary or just one is enough for big jets and airplanes? Thank you so much you are great!!! Saludos
Hi demondriver, i really really like the looks of that f102 dagger would it be possible to get you to build me one just like it? or do you have one of the two you would let go? thanks
Now, what I don't know how to do is to fiberglass over hollow surfaces such as the wings. Often the wings are not fully laminated, so how to keep the fiberglass cloth really tight over the holes. Thanks!
+Anuruddha Higgoda No Sit I tried this and the pin can cause the cloth to rip and it can cause Pulls and ripples in the cloth, but if you can make it work Sir then by all means! thankyou Anuruddha!
If than happens and its too thick add more port B, which will be the "clear" portion or if not thick enough then add more part A which will be the darker liquid.
Financially DIY here makes so much sense. Try buying this stuff Fiber coated, I am sponging youtubers for their knowledge on this. I Carbon fibered my first leading edge slats to add crash-worthiness to the wing. Had a miss-hap with the metal poles at the rc field, and I can't see where it hit!!! If it was bare foam, I would be cutting out yet another leading edge slat. Now fiberglass is economical for large wing and fuselage surfaces, I see myself integrating both on my models.
Hello demondiver. What do you use to join your pieces of foam together for easy sanding later? My thought was youse hot glue in the center and just not let I get to the edges of the piece. Thank you
thank you demondiver i am going to try that tonight. I am redoing the nose of my super sniper. The fiberglass is so thin it cracks very easy. May build it up just a tad thicker.
There's four types if fibreglass from hobbyking, which one should I get to fiberglass my big 7foot scratchbuilds and which one should I get for the smaller scratchbuilds?
Great Video! If I fiberglassed my very small (800mm)EPO flying wing and hollowed out all the foam would it still be strong? I plan on melting out the foam with acetone, leaving just a fiberglass shell. How many layers of cloth would I need, and would I need wing spars?
Hi Frank!. . . If your using 20 oz or thicker fiberglass the only two layers tops. . . If your using 3-4oz cloth then you might need 3-4 layers. Good luck!
Great vid, great lesson. I wonder if You have heard of or ran across a product called "Liquid Sheeting" from "Wowplanes". It's a 3 part app that dries wonderfully as this and adds strength too. It can be used on foam and or balsa. It's so easy to use and self leveling. Just wonder if You want to try this stuff. I have never glassed any of My planes but only because I did not know how. You have given Me thoughts to build some stuff with foam now ( I have built a huge foam hot wire cutter) and glass it. But I will go with Liquid sheet as I have used it on their L45 learjet. it looks great and is paintable too. Anyway, again thanks for this vid. You got skills.
I see how this resin could give the skin a good resistance to abrasion, but would this resin be good if using to laminate with heavy cloth like 6-8oz for your model to really depend on exoskelaton strength, The model I am doing, I will remove the foam around the nose to insert and access the .15 size motor, will leave any foam in place that I can for added strength.
Leonard K I would try using a internal plywood structure or carbon fiber Motor Mount for your 15 size Motor, electric or Glow? sometimes foam laminated with fiberglass isn't strong enough for motors to be mounted to it.
Oh thank you, nice to hear from you F3H, yes on my Morane Saulnier, I made the fuse shape of foam, tested a 4x4 piece of 2 layers of glass to cover the foam fuse and for motor, cut off area where firewall should be, installed 4 blind nuts then I cut the holes for cooling and wires, this is 1/4" ply, it will reach the fuse sides near the nose behind the spinner. 1st time for doing such a project, I have been wanting to build an airplane that had a fuse that did not just look like a box with squared up sides like my Sig Somethin Extra. I put 1/4 plate for hard points for land gear and for firewall, waiting on another kind of wood for the wing shoulders, this 1/4" plate by itself would be too heavy, you know for holes for a wing tube. I posted this build on Flite-Test forum as Professor Fates' Morane Saulnier N, I hope to be able to post real pictures from my phone tonight. Nice to hear from you, I like your thoroughness in your projects and videos. Thank You.
i did my first fiberglass cover on my scratch build. It looked OK but it had a few bubbles in it and some spots were too much but all in all not bad. The fiber resin dries too quick, I used up like 5 paint brushed, how do you handle that??
You ever tried using a roller instead of a brush? Supposedly it doesn't tear up (strings coming out) the fiberglass as bad. Good video! Researching for glassing my Fun Cub.
+mkschreder It will still Move around even if you add a base-coat, only a rough surface will prevent the fiberglass cloth from shifting as you brush on the epoxy resin.
Thanks for replying! What I mean is, with this lightweight fiberglass, is it possible to remove the foam to have a hollow form or do you need to add more layers...in terms of structural strength?
Foose. So you are saying just make a mold using the foam. Fiberglass is strong enough on it's own if done right. May want to put two layers in some areas for sure.
Hey brother nice vid helps out alot! I'm going to make a little vid of my mad dog with some questions for you. So this video is a video for you to see if I can get some advice or suggestions. Keep up the goid work my friend. I'm hoping for a maiden flight of the delta md 88 aka mad dog in September
You refer to the fiberglass cloth weight as three to four ounce and twenty ounce weights. That is incorrect. It is three-quarter ounce and two ounce cloth. If you used twenty ounce cloth you planes would gain a significant weight upon application and defeat what you are trying to do. Also epoxy resin is safe to use on foam as opposed to polyester resin..
