I have figured out how to fill my own propane tanks at home. This is pretty easy to do with this setup.
Come along to see how it works
Liquid Propane Transfer Unloading Kit POL Vapor Tank:
www.ebay.com/i...
Granular Humic Acid Soil Conditioner: lawnrebel.com/...
Liquid Nitrogen with Humic: lawnrebel.com/...
Pro Plugger: lawnrebel.com/...
Lawn Drag for leveling: lawnrebel.com/...
Snow Mold Prevention Application Fungicides:
Ipro 2 Fungicide: shrsl.com/2ul71
Propiconazole 14.3 Fungicide: shrsl.com/2ul79
Chlorothalonil: shrsl.com/2ul7b
The above formula for snow mold is money (amazing).. use all three products at the max rate in the fall and you will not get snow mold in the spring.

Nice video, thanks for making it. Your unfamiliarity with the process and equipment is a little unnerving, but as long as you don't blow up you learn new stuff and get better. Here's some info that might help others investigating this process: Propane weighs 4.24lbs/gallon. A 20lb bottle (like shown in this video) is supposed to hold 20lbs or 4.7 gallons when filled. When filling and the vent on the 20lb bottle starts spitting liquid propane the bottle is considered "filled to a safe level". The "safe level" leaves empty space at the top of the bottle for expansion of the liquid when the outside temperature rises. Propane bottles have an "over pressure" relief valve that will vent gas if overfilled and then the temperature rises too much. However, they will vent wherever they are located and if it's in your garage then it might fill your garage with propane gas........... and that might be a disaster. 250 to 1000 gallon tanks have a tube that extends almost to the bottom of the tank that is immersed in the liquid. This video demonstrates transferring liquid from the large tank into the 20# tank using the "liquid" tube I just described. This can be a slow process, maybe an hour because you're relying on the vapor pressure inside the large tank to push the liquid into your 20lb bottle. When you go to a "filling station" they have a pump that pumps the liquid into your tank under higher pressure so they can fill your 20lb bottle in about 60 seconds. Stay safe, loved the video.

This was a perfect mix of entertainment and education. This reminded me of the Red Green Show and Adventures with Bill. Next time try using some duct tape to help hold the valves together. I also love the NO GLOVES approach. That's how you get tougher hands. And sometimes a nice little frost bitten, lost finger or maybe an explosion of some sorts. Trial and error is the way to go! LOVE IT!

That side screw (Bleeder) you loosened is actually a fixed liquid level gauge. As soon as liquid come out, it means it is filled to 80 percent, AND THAT IS ALL YOU FILL A TANK TO. The tank you have is an exhange tank, that was filled probably to 17 or 18 pounds. They make more $$ that way. It is best to go to a dispenser and have it filled to 20 lbs. A bbq cylinder at 80 percent holds 20 lbs. Although all bbq cylinders now have Over fill protection device on the valve, they do not always work. a 100 percent filled cylinder does not allow for expansion, and when warmed up by warmer temperatures, it will cause the relief valve to pop and leak propane to release pressure. If there is a flame near by, or a spark when it releases, boom!!!

Excellent explanation. I was going to add my thoughts as I have done this for 30 years, but you covered it all! Only addition I could make is I have a scale and add 20 or 30 #’s to the tare wt. stamped on the collar of every tank so I know it’s full, but the 80% vent straw is sufficient.

I have one on my 500 gallon tank, installed by the gas man, a friend of mine. In the winter with a tank under 50% it’s slow to fill. So the way I was taught, disclaimer I’m am not giving advice just what I do. -connect your portable tank as you did. -open the small bleeder valve on the portable tank and leave it open while it fills. This allows it to vent and fill. -open all valves -let it fill until you see white liquid coming out of the bleeder valve on the portable tank. -close the bleeder and all other valves and disconnect. Now when your big tank is full and during warm weather months you will find it fills pretty quick. Not as fast as the a gas station as they have a pump. I love mine it’s very handy and much cheaper when your buying it in bulk from the gas man.

@@lawnrebel I was pretty worried myself the first couple times. My buddy the gasman assured me you can’t overfill these new style of valves as they have built in shut off valve. With that said if you find an older tank with the old style valve they fill much quicker. I look at it this way, some young guy or gal working at a quickie mart, received a few minutes of training is filling tanks with a pump system every day. Just don’t cousin Eddy it and all is well. That portable tank has an OPD valve... Overfill Protection Device. There's a float attached to the valve on the inside of the tank. When the tank gets to 80%, the OPD valve shuts off and won't let any more propane into the tank. A "full" portable tank only has 4 gallons, not 5 and it has 20lbs, not 25. If you want to know how much is in the tank, weigh it. The tare weight of the tank is stamped on it. Just subtract the tare weight from the total weight.

It’s not the wheels that are bad on the Honda, nor is it the belt or transmission like many speculate. It’s the axle where it goes through the deck. It’s just poorly designed bushings that allow moisture and debris in. You can remove the assembly (it’s a real pain) and sand down the axles clean and smooth and then be diligent about lubrication thereafter. Has happened to me on 2 of them so far. It’s a design flaw that is fixed in the newest models.

First off, that cold stuff will FREEZE burn you, and you are dealing with Propane, a pressurized LPG. A tank will always have vaper, or Vaper & Liquid. For safety reasons, you need to remove your valve and hose assemble when you're finished with it. Also, they make a gage, in which you can fill & weigh your bottle, at the same time. And that little bleeder screw is the bleed and a level of 80 percent, open it when you start to fill, and at the first sign of any liquid, close it off! YOU AT MAX ALLOWED! When you get a chance do some more reserch on LPG. It's great when we can look at something, and do something to save money, or save a step of having to deal with the public, but whatever a person put his or her hand to, at the end of the day we want to make it home!

So as you add propane, you open that little bleeder screw occasionally. It is connected to a tube that drops to the 80 percent full level. If you open it and gas comes out it is not air it is propane vapor. Close it. Check again and again until liquid spits out and that means you are done. The liquid has reached the tube sitting at the 80 percent level. Don't overfill. You need a layer of gas propane on top. As it gets warmer outside the pressure will increase which will cause some of the gas to condense to liquid. Without any gas space the relief valve will pop which could be a dangerous release of propane to atmosphere. If the relief valve doesn't work for example is old and rusty, the tank could rupture and boom.

One more final final thought, the pressure in the tank depends only on temperature. It will be the same pressure if it is 10 percent liquid filled or 80. Pressure only starts to drop when liquid level goes to Zero and you are just taking out the last gas. Not enough pressure in the tank to condense what remains. That is why there are no pressure gauges on propane tanks. Pressure is not an indication of level and therefore level should not affect filling speed unless your supply tank has no more level.
@bparker86
@bparker86 2 года назад
Your actually kinda wrong, I work a closed loop system everyday of my life and I PROMISE the volume of solvent int he tank ABSOLUTELY has a direct effect on pressure. Yea the heat decides how much pressure. But 10 lbs of hydrocarbon is far less pressure at 80 degrees Fahrenheit than 80 lbs of butane. Huge huge difference and I'm assuming you meant it differently than it came out. As you do sound like you know what your talking bakut

@Shep VanDelay hey keep er under a hundred eh lol good day my friend
@tomferrin1148
@tomferrin1148 2 года назад
@@bparker86 No, he's right. Tank pressure only depends on the vapor pressure of the particular gas (fuel) at hand and its temperature. For example, vapor pressure of propane at 21*C is 213.3 psi, but vp of butane at the same temperature is only 33.4 psi. That's why propane lighters work so poorly in cold weather. Not sure what "solvent" you are specifically referring to, but its vapor pressure will only depend on the mixture of hydrocarbon fuels involved and its temperature. Pure propane or butane will be the numbers I gave above, but mixtures or containments will make the numbers different. Regardless, as long as any liquid at all remains in the tank, then for a given temperature the pressure will be constant until all the liquid has vaporized. That's why a pressure gauge cannot tell you how much propane/butane/gas remains in a tank and only a level gauge inside the tank or weighing the tank can provide an accurate answer as to how much fuel remains.

Connor, you did everything right except wear gloves. You described the process correctly by turning on the house tank valve first down to the grill bottle. The "liquid leg valve" on the house tank has a drop tube to the bottom to siphon liquid; correct. Some tanks have them, some don't. Fortunate yours does! The grill bottle (newer ones) have a snap lock valve for safety from over filling. It snaps shut at 80 percent volume of the tank being filled, also the slotted head you turned is to show you when you reach 80 percent also by blowing out liquid....otherwise you hear the vapor being released until its full. The house tank is filling your grill bottle by gravity feed from the pressure it naturally has. Propane is under alot of pressure so wear your gloves for sure and your right....never smoke near there! I know because I work in the propane world👍

If the fitting under the cap rotates all the way out, you're gonna have a bad day. 2) people already commented on the spitter valve on the receiving tank. 3) It's not really cost effective to have a $200 + fitting to fill $15 bottles at home. Connor. I am all for DIY, but if you are going to do this you need to use a scale. Overfilling a propane tank can be dangerous. When the tank warms up, the pressure inside will increase and cause it to vent into the area where it is stored.
@jacklewis100
@jacklewis100 2 года назад
Is the pressure in a big tank more than in a small tank? i.e. wouldn't it just stop when the small one is full?
@cyclonicblade
@cyclonicblade 2 года назад
It's not just about pressure. It's about pressure/temperature yes you can over fill the small tank it has to have a room for the liquid to expand. As the temperature changes in the small tank if it is over filled it cannot expand. And can rupture the tank . Even later on in storage. Always use a scale.
@cyclonicblade
@cyclonicblade 2 года назад
Both tanks can have the same pressure and still have the small one " empty " as you need the liquid. You can use temperature differential do the pumping instead of venting the vapors in tank.

Here's my question. Can you buy a 100lb propane tank, have it filled, and buy a valve that will dump propane from it into one of those larger 500lb tanks? We have a tank at an old farm house that needs to be filled but the bridge needs work and there's no way a proper propane truck and cross it to fill things up......

Oh dear....ok,, lets go thru this...btw, I am an LP deliveryman by trade. I do not necessarily recommend filling your BBQ tank like this, there is some danger involved and if you dont know what youre doing you can gooch it big time. 1. The small set screw on the tank is a bleeder valve. Its primary use is as a liquid level check. You want to open it and when the tank is 80% full, it will shoot out liquid. That is a signal its full. The good news is BBQ cylinders have OPD devices that shut off at 80% regardless of if you shut down transfer or not. Though reliable, they may fail, thus bleeder valve is the standard way to check. 2. NEVER mess with LP unless you have proper safety equipment. Gloves rated for chemical contact are a must. I do use some Wells Lamont hide gloves, but bear in mind I've been filling tanks for 12 years and have filled over 10,000 in that time. LP boils around -43 degrees Fahrenheit. Its very cold. If it touches your skin, its more or less like instant frostbite and classified as a chemical burn. Its so cold it can freeze your clothes to your skin. 3. Propane transfers are done with a pump. The valve he is pulling from has a dip tube that goes to the bottom of the large tank, so yes, you can do it. However, the small tank will not fill until the transfer line is purged of air, hence why it took so long to fill. 4. If you do this...the valve on the BBQ cylinder is the LAST one you open, FIRST one you close. Also, open the BBQ tank fill valve SLOWLY. If you do it too fast, you will trigger a safety feature on the valve that closes it. You must disconnect the tank and reset it by firmly hitting it on the ground, bottom first obviously. 5. There will always be some air in the tank, but BBQ tanks are vacuum purged at the factory. Again, you are purging air from the transfer hose. 6. If you attach a valve like that to the main tank, remove it when you are done. Things can happen, people can come and turn it on, and you can have worse things than losing LP. If there is a source of ignition, BOOM. Your LP filling company may even refuse service because of the potential hazard. 7. Most important...if you do this, because frankly I can't stop you, make damn sure you have ZERO sources of ignition. Cigarettes, electrical products, running cars....any of that needs to be minimum 50 feet away. OK, Hank Hill rant over.
@DannerPlace
@DannerPlace 7 месяцев назад
The one question not answered, is: How do you remove the liquid fill line from the main stank? When the line fitting is unscrewed from the big tank, the valve in the big tank slams shut in a most troubling fashion.

This is probably about the most dangerous thing you can do with your propane tank. If that liquid valve on the 1000 gallon tank fails or gets stuck, you’ll get an uncontrollable release of every thing in the tank when that valve is removed. Also he is lucky he didn’t get a freezer burn doing this without gloves. 8:42

I think the trouble was the cold liquid was turning into gas as the line to the BBQ tank was warm. Only when the line turned cold did you start getting more liquid to transfer.
@tomferrin1148
@tomferrin1148 2 года назад
No, the problem was that once some propane moved into the small tank, then the vapor pressure inside the two tanks was equal and there was no pressure differential to drive the transfer of propane from the big tank to the small tank. That's why at a propane filling stations they use a pump to move the liquid propane from the supply tank to the fill tank. When Connor opens the vent valve on the small tank, it reduces the vapor pressure and more liquid propane moves into the small tank... until the pressures in the two tanks equalizes and the fluid transfer stops again. You either need a special pump to transfer the liquid propane or you need to keep venting the smaller tank to relieve its vapor pressure. The new "refillable" propane canisters provide a special valve that vents off the accumulated vapor pressure. Of course that represents an environmental trade off: you are either venting gaseous propane into the atmosphere during the refilling process or you're throwing away an empty steel container which more likely than not will end up in a land fill. Not sure how this will play out in the long term. 1lb "disposable" propane canisters cost about $5 each. 1lb refillable canisters cost about $15 (or more) and about the same if you exchange an empty one for a full one. In the USA, either regulations or some other cost incentive will be needed before refillable containers common place.
