Lots of useful information, good tips! Thanks for sharing! I especially liked the transitions (for example with the withbord) maybe you could show us how you did that in an upcoming tutorial?! 😉 (In DaVinci Resolve, if I can have a wish.) 😁😊

Thanks David! :) I can certainly teach the whiteboard transition. It would take me a bit of time to learn DaVinci Resolve so I would use Premiere sorry! but the technique of "masking" frame by frame are transferable between all softwares. I'll note it down in my list. Thanks ^_^

Great video. Another question on lighting. I video small conference, 50-100 people, and the room lighting never looks god on video. I have seen pro videographers use a spot light from the back of the room next to the cameras, just to throw a bit of light on the speaker's face. What kind of light would do this well?
@VideoUpskill

Great question, I have only used my 2x 672 Aputure LED panels on left and right of presenter but they are not that powerful or focused but they do help paired with low light lens. Maybe contact a lighting company with your request, it's a good idea to get a light that can be dimmable and one where you can control the light area or explain to the conference client how it would be with and without lighting and look at hire options perhaps.

If we are only working with 1 dedicated video camera, a second decent SLR beside it for the C/U, and two phone cameras on tripods on each side (left right) for cut-away shots - do you see any issues with that?

What types of cameras are you using?

3 Questions - Do you charge for three cameras or just the one camera operator for the day? Also doing all this on your own would surely require a lot of setup time? Isn't it a little risky not monitoring two of you cameras (one could go out of record) while you're getting the close up shots etc?

Great questions Aaron, In my business model I charge a rate which includes a camera operator with the gear necessary to suit the situation and budget. That rate will include the amount of value involved whilst still giving a great outcome for the customer. So it's an overall day rate method. I have a lot of practice with these setups and know the steps and checks I need to do and saftey measures. I normally arrive around an hour or so before the event if all I need to do is setup two cameras and get a desk audio feed for a conference or presentation event. Yes true it is risky, I am well aware of that, so first step is to analyse what will happen, look at the run down. If it requires me to be operating the close up camera then that is the top priority and highlight filming is given a miss. However imagine the situation where each person will speak at a lectern for 30 minutes to 1 hour. If you know and trust the gear you are using and you have setup some safety measures you can roam for a short time, get a few highlight shots and come back again, check shots and audio everything should still be all good. That's my strategies for mitigating risk when filming with multiple cameras at an event. :)

Hi buddy, 5 years old but still super informative. Quick question - I have a lot of issues recently where AV systems will not let me plug my recorders into the main feed to capture the audio. I've recorded one event using a shotgun mic under the lectern and a wireless GO II on the lectern as a backup. Any other ideas? It has not been possible to Lav up the speakers due to quick turnaround of speakers. Thanks

in this case use at least 2 lapels, one on first (lapel 1) and one on second (lapel 2) speaker. When first speaker finished his/her talk then lapel 1 goes to third speaker, and so on. With Rode Wireless II you can do this. At FAEC MEET your setup was ok I think :)

Hey! So I wanted to reach out for a question. I just got hired for my first conference and they want a highlight video (10minute) not a a full documented event. For that reason I wanted to stick with my Sony A7S ii instead of renting a HD camera. Even though the HD camera has no recording limit I am hesitant because the quality difference. Some speakers go on to an hour, which kind of scares me because I feel like I will be safe because yet again. They want a highlight video and the keynote speakers which is what they prioritize the most speech is like 15 minutes. Wanted to hear your opinion on this
@VideoUpskill
@VideoUpskill 4 года назад
Hey mate, cool so if I was hired I would always have a separate camera recording all the speakers they want quotes from. That way you can use any quote from their presentations in the highlights edit. Alternatively capture interviews or vox pops and use that as your narrative for the video and just show footage of the speakers in the highlights video. A budget option is to get a audio recorder and continuously record all speakers from the audio desk and that way it doesn't matter as much if you need to start and stop recording A7sii every 30 mins just use an audience cutaway and sync up the externally recorded audio. By the way Sony A6400 can record unlimited 4K and also plugged into a usb battery bank it lasts a long time.

how about lighting, sometimes the lighting on the event is really bad, any suggestions?
@VideoUpskill
@VideoUpskill 5 лет назад
True, there are a few options from my experience. Try and find out from the venue tech in advance what the lighting situation will be. Stage lighting, no lighting etc. I will sometimes bring my 2x 672 LED panels on stands to light the speaker or stage if that's suitable. For interviews bring an on camera LED light. It may be expensive at first but try and Invest in some 2.8 zoom lenses or prime lenses or Sony A7s to help if it's dim lighting and can't do any other option. Lastly film peoples who are standing in good lighting areas, this will make the general footage look better. Hope that gives you some ideas for your next event shoot.

How many cameras and where (and how) would you suggest to shoot a "round table" type discussion, where there are about 30 people sitting and facing each other at banquet tables?
@VideoUpskill
@VideoUpskill 5 лет назад
That's a tricky one, I would always speak with the client and try and modify the setting to make it easier to film. For example well before the shoot ask the client to make a panel discussion for camera and have each person to line up in a row of seats and shoot it like a TV panel talk show with 2 cameras. 1 wide full panel shot and 1 close operated camera to get close up of speaking person. I can't imagine a easy way to cover a circular table format working well for video coverage. Unless you had 3 cameras, 2 wides on each side and 1 roaming close up on a monopod to get close up of speaking person. For audio try 2x Zoom XY recorder's on the table or on mic stands pointing in from each side.

Is there any questions or challenges you have when it comes to filming a conference or event? Audio, gear, cameras, syncing, editing/working with powerpoint slides in the edit?

Video Upskill Framerates, refresh rates in general, but especially when recording a projected presentation as a background. I run into challenging lighting and scrolling, vibrating projector screens with 180 degree shutter at 24 AND 25 fps as well.
@VideoUpskill
@VideoUpskill 6 лет назад
Ah yes this is a tricky situation all the time, a quick improvement/not 100% fix is unfortunately to change out of the 180 degree shutter and use a higher or lower shutter 60/30/25 etc to reduce how obvious the scrolling appears. I'll look out if I find a better fix. :) Thanks David!

@ record @30 fps with 216deg shutter in UK, or 180deg in US.

do you film at 24 or 60p for the main event?
@VideoUpskill
@VideoUpskill 5 лет назад
Depends on what feel I want the event to have. For example if the event is emotional I will film at 50p and have the option in the edit to slow down the footage but if I know the pace of the edit will be fast or I want it to look and feel as natural as possible I will shoot all in 25p
