There's many different methods for punching someone on camera. The basic idea for face punches is what we call "stacking," which is what you're seeing above. However, this can be done from pretty much any angle. You just need the stunt performers or actors to change their distance from each other. For example, when they demonstrate shooting from the side wouldn't work because of the distance, you can film from that angle by having the actors or stunt performers stand closer together so the fist can move past the other person's head and selling the punch. You're definitely not going to film a whole fight scene from an over-the-shoulder angle. There are so many angles to use, and most fight scenes use quite a few, including wide shots to allow the audience to see everything that's going on. In their demo above, there are a couple of examples they show as being good, but there are a few problems. The very first punch in the video doesn't sell because 1) the guy being punched has his left hand up too high so it doesn't look like the punch should be able to hit him in the face, 2) his head moves back at the wrong angle for the angle the punch comes in (his head moves back to the right and up instead of straight to his right and back, if that makes sense), and 3) you want to have some recoil with a punch to the face (where the head jerks back from the punch but comes back almost to where it started). Now that's not a hard and fast rule, but it makes the punches more effective in general. There's also a punch thrown where the hand doesn't go far enough to the right of the guy being punched, so we see space between his fist and the head the entire time, so rule of thumb there is always make sure there is no space between the fist and the head (from the camera's perspective). @@AwesomeSauceShow well you're right, to sell a punch you have to know how to punch. If the fighters don't know how to fight, then it pulls the audience right out of the story due to the inability to suspend disbelief. Stunt performers have to know how to fight, and know different styles, in order to make things believable. Just because you're not really hitting someone (most of the time. I'll save the explanation for some other time) doesn't mean you don't have to know how to really fight.
