One of the questions I'm asked most often is, "Matt! How do you film a wedding ceremony?!", and today I'm going to answer that question in the most detailed video I've ever made on the subject!. In this video, I cover:

My first wedding film is tomorrow! Wish me luck :D This was so helpful! I only have two cameras, and this really helped with angle ideas for me. And I will try to double mic the groom with my saramonic wireless lav mic and another Zoom h1 lav mic. Unfortunately I only have my mom or sister to take with me for the ceremony and they don't really know how to use a camera, so we'll make it work. Thanks for the help :D

Hey Matt! Love this video! Do you have or are you planning on making a video about filming a ceremony as a single shooter? Ceremony is my biggest struggle
@tessamitan
@tessamitan 7 лет назад
Same! I use a 70-300mm lens for the whole ceremony. As the bridal party enters I try to get shots of the groom. For the beginning, I'm up at the front to get the bride walking down the aisle. I try to switch around to the groom, but (depending on the setup) at 70mm focal length I usually get an extreme closeup that isn't super usable. From there I walk around the edges and behind them while being mindful of when the important parts are happening. Then, I'm at the back for the kiss and exit. My deliverable is a 5-6min highlight film, so it works for that. In no way would I be able to deliver a full ceremony cut. Long term I want to buy a B camera and have a stable tripod shot throughout. There's probably a better way to go about it, but that's what I've figured so far. Hopefully that was at least somewhat helpful!

Matt WhoisMatt Johnson who pitched the idea of making it that short? Did you give them the full ceremony as well? I've done two weddings so far, both final vids ended up being roughly 30-40 mins. I would love to trim things down to 6 or so, but they always insist on the full ceremony so I end up doing a wierd hybrid of a music video and documentary style.

Hey, just a quick question about the camera Rachel is holding in the begginning: I know it's an a7sIi with an 85mm, but what's the adaptor? looks like there is something between the lens and the camera? Am I right? :)
@whoismatt

Hey! That's an A-mount Sony 135mm lens with the Sony A-mount to e-mount adapter between the lens and camera.

I noticed your using high apertures, F14, Why not record at 120fps? And edit it to be 60Fps? And lower the aperture to say F8 or F10? Is it because it will let in more light?

Hey Matt, I found this video very helpful. I wondered, though, how important (or rather, unimportant) it is for you to break that 180 degree rule while filming the ceremony. Some of your Glidecam shots with the Sigma 50mm were taken from behind the bridal line, while Rachel’s and the Sony FS100 static cameras are positioned in front.
@whoismatt

+Snokyst thanks! I never really worry about the 180 degree rule during the ceremony. It’s just a guideline not a rule. :)

Not sure if this helps but I name mine alphabetically! So when I put a shot from the reception onto my computer, I'll name it "R First Dance" or the ceremony as "C First Kiss" and put them in a folder and sort them all alphabetically so everything from each phase of the wedding stays together. :)

Hey Matt. Ive watched all 3 videos and maybe Im missing it, but Im still confused on how many cameras youre using to film the ceremony? I cant tell if its 3 or 4? Do you have 1 or 2 cameras that have the 70-200mm lens on them? Is Rachel switching to the 70-200 while the groom is saying his vows so shes ready for the Bride to say hers? Then does she change back to the 50mm? And when? Sorry, a lot of questions. :)

@whoismatt 7 лет назад
+openg8 hey! We filmed with 3 cameras. 2 with 70-200s. And I roam with s third. Rachel’s on s 50mm for the Bride walking in then switches to a 70-200 for the rest of the ceremony.

Hey! Rachel stands at the right side beside the right camera. I get roaming shots of the guest's faces and couple's vows.
@starshipvelcrp
@starshipvelcrp 7 лет назад
So you don't really have a rear safety camera do you? You're kinda covering that with your glidecam camera? Also, around 12:40-12:50, did one of you switch to the 50mm and go behind the bridal party? Also! I noticed a lot of closed off f9 and f14 shots, was that to regulate the light and just not really care about a smaller depth of field? Help with focusing? All of the above!??!
@whoismatt
@whoismatt 7 лет назад
Exactly! Haha yeah at 12:40-12:50 I was handheld on the 50mm behind the bridal party. Sorry I don't have a BTS shot of me doing this. It works well because then I'm not distracting from the event. I'm hidden behind everyone else. I shot a lot at those higher apertures because I don't like having to deal with focus as much when I'm roaming around.

Absolutely loving your channel, just stumbled on it, while researching/prepping for a few travel videos I'm making in the near future. So cool to see how other videographer's go about their day. I have a couple quick questions, if you don't mind. If you do, then I'll just unsub, cry and then move on, but if you find the time, then awesome! 1. Do you find during the Ceremony (walking down the isle with the bride and her father), that the photographer's typically dislike that? 2. When placing the lav's on the inner coat (I usually leave them on the outer), do you find you have to edit out a lot of rubbing on the mic, or do the cover's counter-act that? 3. How often do bride's and groom's typically order a Ceremony Video down the road? Cheers and thanks for all the great info! You deserve a lot more subs than you have!

Hey Matt, when you use the battery grip on the camera, did you ever notice an unstable movement with your footage? Because I used a battery grip with the 16-35 and noticed that it was top heavy and I ended up getting a lot of bouncy footage. Come to find out, the battery grip and the camera connected together had a little bit of play but everything was as tight as it could be. The footage is fixable if you slow it down. I'm just wondering because I'm scared to use the battery grip in the future. Just wondering if you had any tips.

I've always been taught to have at least one shot down the middle and the second camera at least on the bride. But I actually really like the look at the footage with two coming in at angles. And this setup you had two Shooters and four cameras, what would you do if you had two cameras for one videographer? Would you still have two at the sides coming in at an angle, or one down the center and one at an angle?

How does the a7sii handle flash photography going on during the ceremony? Does that interfere with the video, especially indoors? I think I saw an a7sii wedding video with some bright half frames flickering in and out during a ceremony, and I figured maybe you've dealt with it at some point.

I’ve shot second shooter for my husband for years at weddings, when we did mostly photography he mostly used his shots, very rarely used mine. What I shot was mostly insurance to make sure we didn’t miss important ceremony moments, like the first kiss or look. Now that we’ve moved away from wedding photography and into videography, he uses the majority of my shots now. It seems I pick up on things that the bride would appreciate and I’m apparently the queen of interviews, and asking emotional questions. Muahahaha! Lol Loving your channel. Hey so I filmed my first wedding when I was 15. I knew a photographer from church who said the couple wanted a video but she didnt know how to do it. She heard I liked to make videos so she asked me. I shot my first wedding or two for free and went from there. At first people kind of didnt take me seriously because of my age but after i shot a few weddings and built up my portfolio people started to contact me to shoot their weddings because of my reputation. I don't advertise or even have buisiness cards (which I'm working on getting) but after you shoot one wedding, you can usually meet other couples that are engaged at the wedding and the bride will usually recommend you if someone else wants video. I have a question! After you attach the microphones to the groom and minister, do you just leave them rolling/recording for the 15 minutes before the wedding or rely on them to switch them on just as the ceremony starts?
@whoismatt

Hey! Yes I just leave them rolling, I don't trust anyone to remember to start recording.

Hey Matt! Do you currently still use a 70-200 during the ceremony? Thus far I've gotten away with my Sigma art 24-105, but I'm thinking of getting either. 24-70 and a 135mm to switch to if I need the reach, or jus getting a 70-200mm. Thoughts ?

Hey Dan! Yup I still use a 70-200. It’s the best for ceremonies! You’ll be thankful when you get stuck a long ways away in a church balcony etc

Thanks for the help Matt. I was wandering what the logistics where of having your wife shoot up in the front. Do they just save a seat up there or does she crouch down in front of the chairs? I'm a Mennonite and shoot weddings where that is considered a little to distractive. How does she overcome being a distraction?

She crouches down up front. :) As long as she’s up there before the professional starts it isn’t an issue.

Matt, My wife and I are extremely thankful for your wedding filmmaker tutorials. You have truly changed the way we shoot weddings! Now to my question, have you figured out a way to combat the way the Sony A7s II names it's video files? Depending on the number of A7s II's we have, I could have 2-5 clips with the same name of C0001.mp4. It seems counterintuitive to have the camera start back at 1 every time you format a card. I have it set on Series and not Reset, so I am not sure if I may be missing something? It would be extremely helpful if it continued the file numbering system even with a fresh card. Thanks in advance, and keep up the amazing videos!
@whoismatt
@whoismatt 7 лет назад
Thanks so much Kyle! I get around this by copying all my video files into separate folders. So I'll have one folder "A7Sii card 1" and another "a7sii card 2". I import everything into Premiere and organize it by who shot it. I don't believe there is an option in camera to make the file numbers sequential otherwise, unfortunately.

Thanks Matt!!! I watched your videos for months (and some other people's too) before shooting my first wedding. Your's are definitely the best in my opinion. Your warmth, enthusiasm and encouraging attitude are contagious, at least I was infected. As expected everything went wrong, and I was mentally prepared for equipment failure and event difficulties. The lesson I learned after the months of studying your videos was that it is the energy, passion and emotion you bring to the project and deliver in the product that matters to the families. They could pretty much could care less about your technique, video format or cameras you used. Best part is, through I see all the things that need to be improved, I am proud of the video that I produced and the bride loves it. I continue to view your videos and draw inspiration from them. If you have the time ( 30 minutes - through it goes by fast), check out what your teachings have wrought: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xtyi9S89FMs.html (you may have to move the playhead to the beginning). Is it better to take short quick steps when walking backwards with a stabilizer or long strides? Also, I am a woman and regardless of using a glide cam or gimbal, I still have camera shake. Any advice for women with weak arms? I mean VERY weak lol.
@whoismatt
@whoismatt 7 лет назад
Hey! I don't walk backwards very often. I usually walk at a normal pace and try not to fall haha. Have you tried a single handed gimbal like a Zhiyun Crane or Moza Air? You may have better luck with that, those are the most lightweight gimbals.
