So nice to see someone talk about the “craft” of shooting videos and not focus just on the “gear”. Great tips. And you are a great speaker and presenter. Thanks for sharing!
@Robert L. agree with you! Whenever I watched other videos I would often feel worse than I was before clicking on the video as they made it look like it was because of the gear they used. But here the way he explains and show us about the skill rather than gear made feel so much better. I am new to the channel, this is the second video I watched from Thomas Alex Norman and I am subscribing.
1. Great job giving insight into your thought process and the "why?" 2. Love the picture-in-picture showing what you're capturing as you capture it 3. Super cool to see previews of the final edit as you go Do you shoot everything on 60+ fps so that you can pick and choose what you play in slow motion when you are in edit, or do you make the choice before capturing?
Include my vote on the frame rate question. I'd guess at minimum that it would be 60 or higher. I've never tried to slow down a video that was taken at 24 fps but it seems like it would come out choppy. I'm learning a lot from Thomas' videos and do appreciate his teachings.
Can't answer it for sure, but from my perspective I would say that it would be ideal to make the choice before capturing. This way you can take advantage of the 24fps cinematic look. If you shoot everything 60fps, your timeline will have to be 60fps and you will lose the cinematic effect for all shots that are not slowed down. Sounds like a lot of work, doesn't it? It is, haha! That's why we appreciate it.
Teaching is such an overlooked skilled, but it’s amazing how you actually break things down to the smallest most basic details. Something that would come so naturally to you, after doing it for so long, you still manage to put yourself in the shoes of a beginner and lay down the foundation. It’s actually such a difficult thing to do once you become well versed in a skill, so I just wanted to say kudos, you’re amazing at it!
Just happened upon your video and was mesmerized. I have literally watched hundreds of hours of nature photographers explain their craft, and hear them talk about their b roll. To watch you explain, and demonstrate how it’s done is such a wonderful new experience. I love how you connect with nature and make the ordinary extraordinary.
This was the most helpful tutorial for filming I have seen on RU-vid, others can tend to over-complicate and therefore kind of alienate, but this was super helpful! Thanks
I’ve just bought a smooth 4 gimbal and it has spurred me on no end. Your advice and techniques here are just what I wanted. Thanks. Btw it is illegal to say ‘What’s up guys’in British forests.
Thanks for useful tips! 😍❤️ I love filming in nature, it’s my favourite type of environment! It definitely helps to create visual storytelling, to translate those gorgeous natural scenes for the viewer. Which makes them engaged and share a similar immersive experience 🥰🌿 Just subscribed! 😉 Big hello from Canada! 😊 🇨🇦
After watching your few videos, I am really happy to see how you can get cinematic footage without any tools... you are an amazing presenter. Thank you sooooooo very much. Without gimble or with gimble, cinematic shooting is all POSSIBLE.
What truly beautiful footage. My favorites are: "underexposed little moss hill", "pine branch sun sprinkle" and 'reflections in puddle'. Very inspiring!
I'm just getting into the video making, and this was incredibly helpful! Clear instructions, great examples, especially seeing the behind the scenes and then the final result. Thank you!
Hi Thomas - thanks for another fabulous video - I've watched most of your videos and we have found them really helpful to improve our vlogs - we're off to drive around the world in Jan and looking forward to documenting our travels with some new filming techniques - thanks for sharing - Chris & Marianne 🙏😀🚎🌍

Love your videos I just started making fun nature videos after watching yours ….. please tell me what You think and some constructive criticism please I’m just filming from my phone I don’t have fancy camera and editing
Thanks for all your tips thomas alex. I have been following all your tips for travel videos and its true the shots look much more professional with your tips. Its just a shame that we are still not getting enough love from youtube community with views and subs 😅
Great video but footage was quite shaky. A heavier camera would help stabilize it better. I could easily do that by attaching a battery grip. Can also upgrade to a more stable camera like the g85 or gh5. Loved the video. Thank you.
Great video, the tips are great and the result is impressive. Maybe I would add some nice transitions for the scenes, the cuts are a bit hard and disturb the flow of the video. But that's just my personal opinion. Greetings from Austria! Chris
I love love love the way you broke it all down. Its inspirational. Planning a nature shoot for my channel as a newbie and this has helped a ton. Cheers
Hi Thomas! Thanks for another behind-the-scene course. I like that kind of videos because from these I learn so much! Please keep on showing us how to create a film. It feels just like 101 Coaching. Thanks!!
I am merely a beginner with a huge appetite to learn. Out of the many videos that I have watched on this type of subject, yours is for me, leaps ahead. I totally enjoyed the clear and concise manner that you delivered the content. Thank you and subbed . Cheers Paul
@@pashaaziz unfortunately the travel insurance does not cover theft of belongings when unattended to. The robber broke into our Villa and stole my equipment while we were out.
Thought that was great. As someone wanting to get into that sort of thing. I`d like to see a part 2. about how you put it together from start to end. Thanks for that Thomas.
Interesting points of view, definitely going to give these techniques a try, I was saying just last weekend to my wife, I need some video training/advice and I find your channel, thank you👍
Hi Thomas, thanks for this video! It (and your other videos) helps me a lot for learning how to film nature stuff like this! I like the behind the scenes demonstration. I was a bit surprised how much body work some movements are :D, like a small workout, while filming. But it's a lot of fun! Keep going! Greetings from germany. Markus
Thomas , I can sense by your footage you have so much respect for nature. My wife and I just visited Renesse in Prov of Zeeland in THE Netherlands. Especially the dunes and forest around Nieuw Haamstede were impressive . Grts from Belgium.
I always watching Cinematic Videos, B-roll and I'm always amaze to shots, music, and I feel so great like this content...then I try to making cinematic videos and yeah it's cool... Thanks 😊
Excellent and important video. Looks great, and boy, does that ever break up an otherwise boring video of "only far shots of mountains and valleys". That's one of my big sins, that I need to overcome, to add more interest. I really like your idea of breaking things up into some micro narratives like on the little tree, certainly, adds more interest and kind of, more direction which I think adds more interest. Thank you again for this informative video. Marc T.
I am usually lazy to comment but when I saw your video I couldn't resist. Very well explained tips for shooting cinematic shots.Perfect video that I was looking for. Thank you for sharing.
Generally, I do not resort to name calling...but, YOU are a freakin' WIZARD. It's so key to first see the flat, not yet graded "what you saw when you were there" version, because it gives me confidence that all the seeming "crap" I'm shooting, can get magically sorted...one day when I figure out what "post" means, where this mythical land is, and how to get there! Thanks.
Thomas, you are BACK!!! This is what it's about. Good quality content, amazing demonstrations and explanations of what you're doing and why. Showing the end result build as you progress is something that's all too often missing. You're demonstrating what can be achieved with minimal equipment. This is very appealing. You've done the travel video academy, you need to do one for more general videography techniques. In my opinion, of all your seriously excellent videos this one has been the most inspiring of all.
About 5 minutes in so far and had to comment... This video is real solid man, learning a ton. Thank you! I'm sure i'll enjoy the remainder as well. Just subscribed too. Thanks dude.
it is always nice to find someone who does gentle, clear, well articulated instruction. Clearly you know what you are doing, and it shows. Thanks kindly.
Sweet mate very insightful. Just picked up video recently and I couldn't stop feeling overwhelmed when it cam e to taking shots in the woods. I never know where to start. Today was a little better though and now I've just watched this video since coming back and can't wait to go back in with a more mindful approach using the tips described in this video. Cheers
Thomas, just starting off with videography. Your tutorials have to be the best I've seen. I share and relate to your feelings when shooting outside. Currently I'm shooting on iPhone 11 and looking to expand, my dilemma is to continue with the iPhone and add some moment lenses and a freefly Movi gimbal or invest in a mirrorless camera as I like the flexible viewfinders such as canon m50. Any thoughts ?? Thanks again for your tutorials.
This is awesome. I can practice these techniques when Im out and about. Pls make a video tutorial on how you edit this video. Thank you. Love your work.🙌🏼🤗
Very nice =) super creative , thanks for sharing. I went to pick up some mushrooms with my girldfriend last week and made a b-roll sequence video of it, they we not magic either hehe but super tasty
How to focus when shooting scenery, cityscape or landscape video where you are making camera movement and don't have a particular human, animal or still subject.
hi im a new subscriber of yours can you give me a small tip? Where i can download unique free music background for cinematic video excepts from youtube? Thank you in advance
