How To Finally Remove Rust From Your Well Water

We have always struggled with Iron in our water here in Michigan no matter where we have lived. It just became something we dealt with. Water softeners would help a little but over time rust stains kept coming back, staining our toilets, ruining white clothing, staining dishwashers, clogging faucets and shower heads, and causing build-up in our water heaters. It is an issue that I finally needed to find a solution to.

I am going to look into that iron filter! I live in western Washington a stone's throw from the Columbia River, and my house is served by a 25 foot sand point well and we have a LOT of iron. I've got a Kinetico system too but still have quite a bit of iron in the water even after the filters (I actually have two Kinetico systems, one adds chlorine bleach to santize and the other is the salt system identical to the one you've got there, same filter and everything! One thing I've found with it is if that pre filter plugs up the water pressure won't be enough to cycle the valving and it will just sit there on backflush. Really enjoy all your videos, thanks and God Bless you and your family.

Inspiring! Just bought a 20 year old house on a hill. Not sure if the local water is rusty or calcified. We pay the prior owner’s maintenance company to treat the well water (and another company to maintain a newfangled septic system) but I need to find out exactly what they use and why. Also I want to add a) an artesian well hand pump and b) a solar powered backup for the existing electric powered well pump and c) a blackwater & a compost toilet humanure backup system in case it ever becomes necessary to go “off grid”. Not sure how long an electric well pump is expected to last! Also thinking about rainwater filtration redundancy (east coast) : perhaps a new metal roof , larger gutters, and a cistern and swale distribution for watering the garden and orchard. Maybe a fishpond and a solar powered pump to move pond water and grey water through the swales…

kinetico water softener… best I’ve ever used. Like you said in your video, it’s closer to an on demand system and this damn near on demand unless you use hundreds of gallons in a short period of time it will keep up with them or anything. I had the same issue with a regular water softener in my old house. Where are you would get untreated water coming through your house thinking you had softened water.

Great explanation. We recently put in a similar system.

Fantastic breakdown of the new water system. You explain things in a simple way for all to understand. Your definitely spiritually gifted at speaking and teaching. If I could humbly make 1 suggestion for safety, your water heater TPRV discharge should be plumbed down the side of the tank exiting approximately 6" from the floor. Just in case the rare circumstance it ever releases pressure. Great video SSL fam!

Thanks! Yup, that isn’t hooked up just yet, no power run to it and I need to finish that pressure release piping too!

Can I ask about the cost - acid neutralizer vs oxidizer? Thank you.

What media do you have in the iron filter? Is it katalox? I just installed a iron filter with katalox and the ph drastically jumped resulting in slimy feeling water but I hope and I have been reading that it goes away. On a side note I used your video from years ago to build a chicken coop and it has been the best! Keep up the good content!

How did you clean the iron bacteria already in the plumbing, such as the toilet tank?

I would be interested to know what your initial costs run for installation on all of those things together. And then also would like to know your cyclical maintenance costs, as you have to buy new replacement filters, water softener salt (if any) & whatever else is required, per month or per year. It would also be interesting to know how much more expense such a system setup adds to the monthly electric bill, unless it is practically negligible & feasible. Right now the most basic whole house water filter I would need is just the sediment/sand spin-down filter. 04/07/24

If you have that much iron in the water, you will have to replace the media in the iron tank. About every five to eight years. It is a very simple task. That's why they want your old tanks

For the sediment filter, you said you drain it every once in awhile. What is once in a while for you? Also what did you use to remove the rust stains in your sinks/ toilets? Thank you.

Toilet cleaner works good to remove the stains. I purge the sediment about once per month

They make this pumice stone called "scouring stick" that totally removes all the stains. It's the only thing I've found that makes something look new again.

Hey Todd, hopefully your favorite online plumber/commenter/brother here. I commented in your last plumbing video. I just left a plumbing company and they are using Brita filtration and softener systems. Brita uses catalytic coconut carbon for filtration, the best, IMHO. I don't know about yours. You are right about replacing the anode rod as softened water reacts with the magnesium rod. If we don't use a powered anode rod, we use an aluminum anode rod. Hopefully no sulfur in your well water then you need a hydrogen peroxide system to remove the sulfur before the other filters. Glad what you have is working well for you. Some times it can be tricky getting everything just right. God's blessings upon you and the family.

It will depend on many factors but there are links to everything except the kinetico system as that is dealer specific

I actually have one in the box that is propane but decided not to use it. Because we have the wood boiler also it was going to get more complicated and we needed the tank. I like the option but it just wasn’t for us
