Leave ANY QUESTIONS in the comment section, I am here to help!
Financing a motorcycle is not a big deal at all, most people need to do it to get the bike that they want, and I think it's important to understand how this works so you can get the best deal and lowest motorcycle payment possible! This goes along with all of the help I try to give you guys on how to buy a motorcycle, motorcycle buying tips, and just motorcycle tips in general.
We can make this part of the Ask a Motorcycle Guy series, since I get this question a lot. Hope this helps!

What is a good term length to go with? Are the financing terms similar to cars? Typically cars are 4 or 5 years long. Is that a normal length of time when it comes to bikes? For instance, if I wanted to pick up a used bike from a dealer and they're asking $5,000 and I can't spend more than $90-100 a month, is a 60 month term out of the question? do dealer's typically have a shorter term limit or does it just vary on credit and the amount of money you put down?
@AlexSimmons11c
@AlexSimmons11c 6 лет назад
Hi Kyle! It all varies on credit, but usually on a motorcycle the average term will be 3-5 years. Usually 3 years if someone wants to pay it off quick, but most lenders will easily go out to 5 years to get that payment lower. You shouldn't have too much trouble getting a 5 year loan on a $5000 bike, unless you have some major credit issues then they may want to keep it shorter. Generally speaking though a 60 month term is not out of the question.

So you'd say chances are pretty good even with a lower credit score that a shop could get you approved for financing just at a higher interest rate and possibly bigger down payment? My credit score is around 580 and i was thinking that wouldn't be good enough
@AlexSimmons11c
@AlexSimmons11c 4 года назад
Yes most shops should be able to make that work, they will just have to work a little harder and yes the rate will be higher...but I get people approved in that range all the time

So, I'm not sure if you're still answering questions on this, I've found a killer deal on a 06 dyna, at 4500 with 1000 down, I have a 500 credit score, how likely am I to be able to get that bike financed somewhere?
@AlexSimmons11c
@AlexSimmons11c 6 лет назад
With a 500 score it will be challenging, but with $1000 down on a $4500 bike that should be enough of a cash down percentage to get someone to take a chance and finance it for you. You will likely be paying high interest in order to build your credit back, but there are definitely lenders out there that will work with a 500 credit score, just have to find them in your area. It is a doable situation though with the right lender.

How's it going. I got a 2018 harley davidson heritage softail classic. Price tag 16,100 I have a credit score of 750 and I put down 6,000 and then they added a 2000 dollar 24 month 24000 mile warranty if the engine, transmission or electrical breaks down. I don't no why I agreed to that being two years old. Then I still have to pay 100 bucks. So I still owe 14, 233 dollars on it with licensing and fees and all the bs. Monthly payments are 275. And interest rate is 6.5 I just don't feel like the 6 grand I get a good deal? A
@AlexSimmons11c
@AlexSimmons11c 4 года назад
Hi Sergio! On a used bike that interest rate isn't too bad, and they payment isn't terrible for the amount you financed, but it does sound like they may have overcharged you a bit for the bike itself and for the warranty unfortuntely, and that's why it doesn't feel like a great deal to you after your $6k down. That being said if you enjoy the motorcycle then I wouldn't look back and worry about it, just ride and have a good time, and maybe don't spring for the expensive warranty etc next time!
@elviking3478

Alex, I have been in the mortgage finance business in the past, so I know quite a bit about financing. I think you explained things quite well for the time allotted. I am glad you mentioned credit unions (good places to go) and shady loan officers. Most people do not realize that a loan officer makes money two ways those being a percentage of the amount financed and the rate they charge(with both items the more you finance and the rate they can get from you means more money in their pocket) A good example of a bad loan officer at a dealer. many years ago, I bought a new SUV, the finance guy at the dealer wanted to charge "X" (which was an outrageous number, I told that was a crazy rate, he said you have some bad credit(I had run my own credit and it was in the low 800's, which is very good) I went to my own bank and the rate was half of "X". Another example my daughter and her friends were all buying houses, my daughter had great credit and so did her friends. The loan officer said she could buy twice the cost of the house she was buying based on credit and income she said no her friends said yes then the market crashed, her friends or spouse lost their jobs. Because her payments were low the crash did not hurt them unless they had to move to another state, they may not get the price they paid, her friends that lost jobs could no longer make the payments and lost their houses. You summed it up well make sure you can make the payment or spend less

Thanks for watching and for the feedback Joel! Yes a good or bad finance person can make all the difference, and ethics are important (I won't hire or keep a shady finance manger at my shop). Thankfully in the motorcycle business most of our lenders do not allow a rate markup or pay participation, only a couple of our lenders do, and we don't use them much. I'm all about someone getting the best rates they possibly can so that they can just focus on enjoying the ride.

Hi Nate! Keep in mind my experience is from a US dealer point of view, sounds like you’re in CAN do may be a little different! In your case it sounds like you’ll either need a good co-signer for a loan or you’ll need the dealer to get you approved for a first time buyer program. If you get a good co-signer your $1000 down should be fine, if not and they can get you on a first time program you’ll likely need to count on at least 20% down. I hope this helps!

As a 69 yo retired metal worker on a fixed income of about 25k who would set up payments (auto pay) i think I would be a safe bet for a small loan that I would pay off quickly(3000.00-1200.00 (cash)) leaves 1800.00. 9 payments of 200.00 each. Plus some interest. Do I need full coverage motorcycle insurance? I have a motorcycle license.and a helmet.theres a new safety product for motorcyclists. A vest that has a sensor that senses the quick change that happens in a collision and Pop goes an airbag on your chest vest. And for one hundred dollars.

Being 18 your biggest issue will be a lack of credit history, even with a good score like that you won't have enough years of established history yet for SOME lenders. That being said with a good score and provable income, you should not have much issue getting a local credit union or smaller lender to take a chance on you, we get younger people approved all the time in similar situations to yours. It will depend on whether or not the finance person you deal with is worth a damn! Give it a shot!

So what I’m tryna do is have my mom get it through financing cause she has a great credit score. I’m planning on paying her what ever money it is every month so that she doesn’t pay anything. Not sure if this is unreasonable or not. I can’t think of any other way to be honest. I’m not even sure if financing for dirt bikes is the same as it is for motorcycles. Anyways that’s my plan.

Financing for dirt bikes is exactly the same! So you are in a different situation, and since you can't buy a motorcycle on your own in the U.S. under 18 years old, your plan may be the best option! My aim is to buy a bike under 12k in 6 months or so. My credit is low [damn college] and im taking this time to build my credit hopefully a hundred points or so. If my credit still is low yet I have a down payment of, let's say, 2500, would i still have a good chance of walking out with a bike?
@AlexSimmons11c
@AlexSimmons11c 4 года назад
As long as you have more than a couple years' credit history and a good chunk down you can usually get financed, how the terms will look at the time will just depend on how much you can get that score up! With 2500 down you should be able to make it happen...it will also depend on what your income vs debt is at the time of course. In order to not get stuck with a crap rate try to make sure your score is above a 620-650 before trying (my humble recommendation)

Hi Alex, I was wondering is it possible to negotiate with a price that's been reduced from the MSRP? For ex. 2016 Honda CBR300r originally cost $4,300 been reduced to $3,000.
@AlexSimmons11c
@AlexSimmons11c 7 лет назад
Hi Yoshiyadoe, it depends entirely on the shop that is selling the bike and whether or not they have already used up every resource they have. For example if its a used bike that they are already knocking a bunch of money off, then they probably cant go any lower. If it is a new bike that they are marking down a lot then maybe they are already using up all of the rebates and maybe not. It get's to be a complicated question to answer without seeing all the details, but usually if a bike has been reduced a lot already it's probably a good deal and usually cant go much lower. Bikes don't have that much markup really, so if it's a good deal and its the right bike for you that's what counts!

You might get lucky and be able to get just a small personal loan for the remainder but...in most cases no matter how small the financed amount is the lender wants to see some stable job history first!

Hey man loved your video! My question is. I have on the lookout a 2016 yamaha r6 for $8200 (60th aniversary) i have a 720 credit score(young credit line) what do you think my interest rate will be? and what do you recommend putting down??
@AlexSimmons11c
@AlexSimmons11c 4 года назад
I usually recommend putting down 20% if you comfortably can, that way it gets your payments down a little and give you some equity in the bike starting out, all good things! With your score it will depend on how young your credit really is, but with an over 700 score if you have more than a year of history you should be fine. Try to go with a credit union if you can, but you should be well under 10% more like the 6-7% range, again depending on how long your history really is!

Quick Question. Was wondering if there are any fees you have too pay up front when financing a bike?
@AlexSimmons11c
@AlexSimmons11c 6 лет назад
You usually don't have to pay "fees" so to speak, but if you have limited credit or bad credit you will probably have to put some cash down. It isn't really a "fee" because it reduces the overall amount of your loan, so the cash down you pay when financing actually helps you, it makes your payments lower and reduces the amount you finance which saves you on total interest etc. If someone wants you to pay a "fee" to finance (like an acquisition fee) then don't do it. Run away and find a better finance option.

So my situation is im 17 turning 18 at the end of April and the bike id like to get is a yamaha r3 its used and is about 3k and i am willing to put 900 bucks down on it. Can you tell me how hard it will be to get approved? Reminder I have no credit history at all. Thanks
@AlexSimmons11c
@AlexSimmons11c 6 лет назад
Hi Isaiah! First off the R3 is an awesome choice, and at $3k you're getting a great deal on a used one if it's in good shape. As far as the financing end of it, with absolutely no credit history at all the WORST case scenario is you will need a decent cosigner on the loan (mom, dad, older relative). Some shops have good "first time buyer" programs with a local lender, but not all do. So if your shop there has a first time buyer program set up then it should be doable by yourself, if not then you will need a good cosigner to make it happen buddy. Good luck and let me know if I can help!

Hey Alex I’m trying to pick up a gsxr 600 and I have no credit, I’m 19 and I have no idea how credit works, I’m trying to finance it to start working on my credit, the bike is 11,400 and I’m thinking about putting down 4k. I went to go look at a bike in a dealer and I asked if a guy like me with no credit and young will be able to finance a the bike with a 4k put down payment. And they said that it’s most likely I won’t be able to get the bike. I need your help and was wondering your input on my situation. Thank you.
@AlexSimmons11c
@AlexSimmons11c 4 года назад
Hi Angel! In your situation you will most likely need a good cosigner with a long credit history to sign on the loan with you so you can start building credit. There is a slight chance they could find you a loan with a first time buyer program, but in that case you won't be able to get a bike in that price range, and the interest rate will suck. So unfortunately you will either need to find a good cosigner, or will have to build credit a different way first like a secured credit card, or go for a cheaper bike.

@AlexSimmons11c 6 лет назад
If your credit isn't good then you will save a lot of interest by buying a bike cash used that's for sure. The flip side is if you can easily afford the payment then financing one at a dealer could also help get your credit back on track, all up to you!

Buying privately gives you no warranty/guarantee whereas buying from a dealership, they normally safety the bike (unless buying AS IS) and will stand behind it's being road worthy when it leaves the dealership ~ They have reputations to uphold unlike some schmo from CL.

@AlexSimmons11c 4 года назад
It will depend on who they use for a lender, different lenders have different rates. Also if you can get a good cosigner to help on your loan your interest will be much better! Try to find a good cosigner, if you don't have any credit your interest will likely suck otherwise, just being honest!

@AlexSimmons11c
@AlexSimmons11c 6 лет назад
Hey Joey, no problem let's go over it real fast! So on a new bike it will be tough with a lower score, usually on new motorcycles you need to be 620+ for a NEW lender to work with you on it. That being said your shop may have a good local bank or lender they can go through to get it done for you, but if they do just be prepared for the fact that you WILL need a decent chunk of cash down to make it happen. Your other option is to find something similar enough to that in a used bike that you can live with, since a used bike will be easier to finance with a lower credit score. Youll still need cash down, but probably less cash down, and it'll help you build your credit back. Let me know what else I can answer, here to help!

Hey I know this is an old video but I came across it and it’s a good video, but I’m curious and would like to know what you would do in this situation. I want to finance a new 2021 rmz250 and it’s going for around 7250. I just recently started using credit about 4 months ago and I make all my payments on time so I would assume my credit is fairly decent. This would be my first big finance and I would put down 1-2 grand do you think it’s a smart or bad financial move I’m only 19
@AlexSimmons11c
@AlexSimmons11c 3 года назад
Well it all depends on what interest rate you get! With your down payment etc if you get a good rate you should be in a comfortable payment, but at your age if you try to finance you will probably end up with a high interest rate, in which case it is better to wait until you can pay cash or have an older relative with good credit cosign with you for a better rate! I just release a new video on not making the high interest mistake!

If I'm financing a motorcycle am i allowed to go into the shop and pay it off when i have the money? Cause i have close to 3000$ CAD saved and i usually have close to 400 or 500$ a month in disposable income so i can pay high payments if neccessary but i have no credit at all so nothing bad basically and i was just curious if that means after let's say 5 months i have another 2500 or more saved am i then able to pay that to the shop to drastically lower how many more months i have until it's paid off? If anyone could answer this i would appreciate it as i need a vehicle to commute to work on and the bus is something I'm sick of and I've wanted a bike since i was 15 I'm 21 now

@AlexSimmons11c

I can’t guess the rate because it will also be an equation between score, income, debt level, and book to value ratio of the machine. But on a $10k ish machine you should plan for $1000-$2000 down range at least, and a payment in the $200-250 range unless you have credit issues or something that jacks the rate up

@AlexSimmons11c
@AlexSimmons11c 6 лет назад
Hi Anthony, your interest rate is going to vary depending on which lender your shop uses for you. If you have no credit at all depending on which banks they use you should expect to pay anywhere between 10-20% IF you have no credit at all, just because they are giving you a shot and trying to get you started. As far as a payment that all depends on what that rate ends up being and how long, how many months the loan is for. Even with no credit you should be able to make an FZ09 happen though with $1000 down for less than $200 a month. At least in my experience with the banks that we have access to.

Hi Tim! It sounds like they used your down payment to cover the taxes etc. and probably put GAP insurance or another product on there as well. Take a look at your bill of sale, they should be required by law to provide you with the Bill of Sale, and your Bill of Sale should match your finance contract (which they are also required to give you a copy of)

@AlexSimmons11c 6 лет назад
Hi Jacob! Depends on the shop you are going through and what banks they work with, but if you put that much down they should be able to make something happen. Now if you don't have any credit then yes your interest rate will likely be kind of high because the lender will be the first one taking a chance on you, so they are likely going to charge higher interest in exchange for taking a chance. The flip side to that is if you can get someone with long history of good credit to cosign with you, then your interest rate and everything will be much better. Give it a shot and see what they can make happen for you!
