Let me explain how to find a farm on the Internet. We found our farm and homestead by searching the internet back in 2016. Let me explain what we looked for when we were buying land and the things you should consider if you want to find a farm on the Internet.

About Gold Shaw Farm: Gold Shaw Farm is more of a farm-in-progress than an honest-to-goodness farm. Our dream is that someday we are able to transform our 150+ acre parcel of land into a regenerative and productive homestead and farm.

Rudi, do it. Buy a farm somewhere if you can afford it. Buy the land at least. If you don’t do it you might be sucked into the rat race and you will regret it at about 30yo.

I'm from a very rural part of Alabama. I strongly support buying property that has a conservation easement. Even in these very rural areas lots of farm land is being lost to building subdivisions. Even if the land isn't conserved when you buy it get it into one will mean the land has to stay rural even after you're gone. Also please do go and explore the community. Nothing is worse than not liking the people you live around. Also make sure your planned operation won't run afoul of any local laws/ordinances. The county I'm from is dry so the guy who tried to open a winery ran into some issues, hard to give a winery tour when it can't end with samples.

Love this video! My husband and I spent so long looking for a property. We didn't want a huge farm, we wanted to be close enough to the city, we needed enough rooms for our kids. Looking was so frustrating. I had no idea it would feel so exhausting and like an uphill battle. Then one day we came across the perfect property. It was vacant and overgrown for 2 years and the interior walls of the home were all bright green but with a lot of hard work(and paint) it's now our paradise! We now run a small animal sanctuary :)

Bringing up the region you want to live in is so important. My husband and I both grew up in the Midwest (Illinois for him and Ohio for me). Nancy Litton, 2-5 acres is perfect for a small homestead. Chickens for eggs, manure and eating leftovers that have gone bad. Enough room for your veggies and berry bushes. Some space for privacy and get to know your neighbors. Good luck. Water is mandatory of course, and solar backup may be the way to go in case of power failures.

My husband and I are in the process of doing this right now; pulling up stakes in a city (Houston) and moving somewhere that is not urban and not hot (Northwest Michigan...the pinky part of the map.) Morgan, I turned this on 29 minutes after it was posted. I have to say I think it is the best video you've done. I really enjoy watching your videos. But I think this one is truly outstanding. I was the oldest son on family farm and I remember all the hard work we did. We had a lot of fun but there were definitely times when life there was nothing like the movie nostalgia or everything was wonderful. There were some really hard times and a lot of hard work. Your information on this video was excellent. I'm now 71, live in a neighborhood with friends all up and down our street, have been retired for a number of years and loving the life I'm living now. If I have learned one thing - it's that your guidance in this video is the absolute best. Keep up the good work.

This is going to be so helpful to many young folks looking for a slower paced life style. Maybe that is not the right words, but away from the rat race so to speak. It is also good to know in your own heart and mind "do I have the self discipline" for this kind of life, because it is a full time job, not fr the faint of heart. In my country (Bulgaria), due to depopulation, you can find big plots of land for the fraction of the price in the states, heck, there are even houses for, like, 100 bucks, and the land is good, most things can grow here. But there is just no one interested in them, since many are located in deserted villages in poor regions, with bad road connections, people are not feeling financially secure about making such a step, or just want the big city life. It is a shame, really. At least foreigners are interested in them, but most of them are retired westerners, which want humble calm life, no one wants to make a farm.

It can be very hard to find arable land in other parts of the country. Where I am in Nevada even if you can find land to farm on you'll be fighting over water rights or paying 50k to dig a well though our rock layers, assuming there's ground water at all. As far as state laws, building regulations, and taxes NV is top tier compared to California next door. I didn't buy a farm, but I did buy a vintage airstream trailer. I went through the same process of distilling my goals, needs and wants; figuring out the market I was searching in; etc. It took me two years of searching and saving and near misses before the right purchase came up, and by that time I had almost given up. But I didn't know when I'd ever get the opportunity again, so I jumped on it. I'm still working on renovating that trailer four years later, mostly because the more I learn about the trailer and myself, the more I'm willing to take things apart in order to truly make things better, or do a more complete job that will last longer. But it's worth it, because I know my trailer retains a lot of value in the market and it's the perfect size for me.

Yes, your ideas are sound. As a retired Psychiatrist, I really think all of this is good advice for those who want to enter the farming industry. We need farming families like you. The last comment brought the “artistry” into the business. Human endeavors require mind body and soul and this is true whether one is religious or not. A human in an individual that is more than a machine. The mind is a function of the brain and it is spiritual bc the mind is a product of the brain’s marvelous capabilities of integration. This complexity is called the Human Condition. Satisfying the Human Condition brings joy to life and usually success in most endeavors, especially if one has little intrusion via governments. I do wish you peace and good health now and in the years to come (especially in these times of our local, state and federal governments overreach crazy behaviors).

We lived in DC too, 2003 across from the Zebra lounge on Wis, also looked into northern kingdom VT, loved the weather-taxes not so much. We ended up in WV, still too close to DC, but it's like another world here.

Your process sounds a lot like what I did, except I was only looking for 5-10 acres. The funny thing is that after all that searching and comparing, even after going there and getting it inspected, what you know before you buy is just the tip of the iceberg and then you have to hang on and live and learn and hope! 😂

Ooh I will have to check land trusts. We are moving to Kansas when I finish my PhD (2 years away yet) and I want to actually have some property/farm land when we get up there. I still don't know what the rules will be for me keeping livestock other than my horse (I research transboundary animal diseases, mostly of livestock) but I want to have enough for a *huge* food garden. This will help my search considerably - Thank you!

What is your PHD program? I am a retired Psychiatrist (MD), Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society lifetime member. Are you studying agricultural aspects of food production? Nutrition always had interested me and I knew far more than my AMA 3 hour course (note not credit hour but literally 3 hours only) schooling offered me. Want a diet? See a chef bc they get more nutritional classes that even a dietitian and can tailor that diet to your liver enzymes. The AMA-FDA COMPLEX often frustrates me. Power & wealth is their goal not health!!!!!!

@@barbarahouk1983 sorry just saw this. I'm doing a PhD in veterinary pathology, focusing on Transboundary Animal Diseases and keeping our livestock safe from economically important viruses. I've had my DVM about 10 years now and wanted to expand my education.

Morgan, Very practical advice. Get on the ground and have a look at what is on either side of the photographs you have seen and also what is behind the camera. Eye-opener! Regards Stephen.

This should be the priority in every state. Water is being bought up by big corporations in some areas, so make sure you have a well or year round stream with water rights.

Im 25 and bought 11 acres in Vermont too! We are a fully remote work couple wanted to go back to Vermont (we went to college there). Got land and looked to build a home and they wanted 500k for a garage a small apartment above!!!... so we are now about to close on a house an hour south of where we bought land. It has 4 acres and is a full on house for half the cost!! hoping to get out there in December and start a small farm in the spring. Hate all the plastic, chemicals, and torture that our food is exposed to and I want something better for myself family and community.

I currently live in England in a really large town in Essex but I personally hate people (except my partner) so hopefully this year I will be moving to Northern Sweden where there's less people. Me and my partner would like to have animal (chickens and ducks) eventually but as long as I don't have to be around a lot of people anything works. If you could guess I'm one of the people actually enjoying quarantine.

In our area you HAVE TO view any property you buy in the spring at peak runoff. There is a gigantic aquafer under this whole area, so unless you plan to build on top of a mountain (and even if you do plan to do that), you never know what will turn into a lake in the spring until you see it.
