with this device can you detect where water pipes pass inside the wall?

antonioalbertoonline I wouldn’t rely on it to detect pipes and it won’t magnetized to copper. Most pipes are in the center of the wall which makes it too far to connect, Thanks for watching

When you find a screw in the stud, how far away should you drill in the stud? I imagine you don't want to drill in the same spot if your using a magnet stud finder.
@WorknDirt
@WorknDirt 4 года назад
Bryant Caminero if you must use the same location then i would Put the screw right next to the old screw but angle about 15° towards the center of the stud. But if you can, put your screw an inch above or below the existing sheet rock screw. Hope that helps

how do they know what exactly the device has detected? because there are many things in a wall. he can't distinguish wood from ducts or pipes?
@WorknDirt
@WorknDirt 3 года назад
You’re right, the devices don’t tell you exactly what could be behind the wall, it does take a lot of experience to truly interpret what responses you’re getting from the devices. Some other helpful advice is, if you’re using the magnetic finder it needs to detect metal within millimeters of the sheet rock surface to be strong enough to stick to the wall. Most objects are farther behind the wall except nails and screws. There are a few exceptions like flat ductwork or a vertically ran pipe that can be close to the surface of sheet rock. In these instances it’s important to measure the width of the detection points. Both magnet and electronic devices Have a tolerance of about 1/8” which allows you to see if there is a stud that is 1.5 inches wide, anything wider or narrower indicates more investigation is needed. I hope that helps, thanks for watching

@WorknDirt

Christian Avalos Good question! that plywood is providing shear strength to your house but a strong magnet should still find the screws that go into the studs. both the sheetrock and plywood nail to the studs. let me know if you find them! thank you for watching!

I would not drill near an outlet. You never know how the electrician wired on the stud. Some guys are very careless and messy. The stud might have a metal plate, but where there's no stud, you can not put a metal plate and you might drill into a wire. I would rather use a magnet from wall outlet to the next nail that is nailed to the stud. I would use a screwdriver to knock on the wall. Knuckle might hurt after a while. Finally I found a device that can find stud, wire, and metal. I'll order it soon. And it has a laser range finder too.

It has a learning curve. Once I used it a few times, I stopped using anything else. And I can't believe anyone would recommend using one of those cheap $1 magnetic "stud finders" you get for free in some hanging kits. I've seen some really shitty do-it-yourself jobs ever since HGTV became popular showing people how to do things wrong, and my Zircon has saved my noodle from hot wires in a place they shouldn't have been. A magnet would've just helped my partner light his cigar. But hey, y'all do you.
