My compliments! You’ve done a very good job here of explaining the difference between dispersed camping and campground camping. The one thing I might add is that, people visiting dispersed camping areas should remember to respect the space of people camping there. People don’t drive into remote corners hoping for neighbors. If you camp near someone be sure to ask if they’re comfortable with neighbors and try to be considerate of their space. Thank you for taking time to share your experience with us. I’ve been camping in Oregon for 70 years and even I learned something.

This is exactly what I've been looking for! I've been looking for a dispersed camping site or tips in general. Dispersed camping is the world I am looking for! The dirt roads would be something I look forward to since my husband and I own an off road vehicle. The solitude and the seclusion alone makes it so much better already.

Overland style dispersed is hard to find here in New England. So encompassed with campgrounds and with private property there’s not much opportunities to take your car out and drive to a distant location. Private camp locations is usually the next best thing

Great review of each! Waste removal is really key. If you are the type of person who wants to get rid of your trash in a dumpster before you leave, instead of packing it out with you, then a campground would be for you. Some dispersed camping (in the desert, for example) even encourages or requires that you even pack out your own human waste - I think you've touched on this in some of your backpacking videos. Regardless of where you're camping...make sure you leave it better than you found it so we can all enjoy it! :)

I rewatched this after road tripping through the canyons of northern Utah. We saw a lot of RVs on dirt roads. I assume that’s the dispersed camping areas. Do you have a strategy to camp alone away from RVs? To me that ruins the remoteness when you want solitude. Do you park and then hike away from the road to find a spot? I don’t want to tent camp next to a road an RV or Off road vehicle is driving.

Thank you. For non backpackers you should buy a backpack. Most BLM or forest land you may have to camp a mile away from road. Take a picnic dinner. If you are not active a mile may be tough. Remember if you forget something in the car it is 2 miles of walking! Usually overnight you can simply go without a few items.

What I don't know is WHERE I can set up the tent and for how long.

If you’re camping at a campground (reserved) for a weekend and you have to drive away from your campground to get to a specific hiking spot. Are you supposed to pack up everything and reset it up again that night or do you leave your tent up & supplies out while you’re hiking? (Doing some research as I’ve never been 🤪) thanks!
@JudyWebring-Reynolds
@JudyWebring-Reynolds 2 года назад
When we’re at a reserved campground, we often leave for the day and leave our tent and things out. At state parks in Oregon where I am, there’s always a sign showing your spot is reserved and there’s usually a camp caretaker or ranger checking in every so often. We don’t leave out anything super valuable or private. Usually the tent, stove, and chairs and if we’re on foot, obviously our car is there too. That’s what I’ve seen most people do. We’ve never had a problem. I would be surprised if someone had the gull to steal from other campers. Everyone is likely there for the same reasons and wouldn’t want their things messed with either. Of course there is the occasional weird happening but you can’t let that worry you or stop you from enjoying yourself. Have fun!

Nice video! I have two questions: 1) Which app/website can you recommend most for finding out what type of property you are on (private/national forest/BLM/...)? 2) What is your experience regarding the amount of dispersed campsites that are registered on websites such as Campendium vs the amount of dispersed campsites that you find via satellite map search or "manual" search by walking through nature?

Hello, I keep coming back to your channel because it is so informative. I was wondering , for dispersed camping, what aps would you recommend? I live in California, and want to plan a trip for probably February. I am a poler bear guy, so I like cold, and don't mind rainy at all. LOL. I am looking for the away from camp grounds outing. I have been camping on and off every year for about 10 years, and have grown tired of having neighbors at camp. Lol I work in retail so I get enough of people and when I want to get away, well I want to get away. I love nature, it has a revitalizing effect on me, and would love to find more nature and less distractions. I have a few very close friends who are looking to try this as well, and I don't want to make them miserable by looking in all the wrong places for good info. any help would be greatly appreciated. I love your food ideas to. you really got this stuff into an art.

For land use areas, I like to use the Gaia GPS app. With a premium membership you can use public and private land ownership overlays and it makes it really easy to know what type of land is where. I also use the satellite view on Apple maps, Google maps, or Gaia to look for patches of dirt that might be good for camping. The Gaia app is nice because you can download maps before the trip and they'll still be visible even if you don't have service. I think there are other camping apps out there, but I've never tried any of them. Hope this helps!

If "Jesus Christ its so fcking cold" is not my very first thought waking up, I know I'm not camping hard enough lol One huge life changing decision, for me that is, was giving dispersed camping a try. But it made me nervous, just because of the risk factors. Even though I'm a skilled hunter and outdoorsman, I was hesitant. Till I finally pulled the trigger and went all out. My first trip I went 3 nights and 4 days in northern Utah. I hiked 6 miles from my truck and set up on a river bank in early October. Being completely alone in absolute solitude is an indescribable experience. And I'm so blessed I live in an area that allows me to go out once a month and spend a weekend away, while not really costing anything but a tank of gas and I can be in a completely new area every time. I love it

How specifically do you ascertain whether you can camp somewhere or not? Like, not a broad answer, what words do you put in a google search or what website do you go to to find a spot that looks like you could camp there, then confirm that you both can and find out in advanced about fire regulations and whatever? I know my question isn't articulated well and I honestly don't know how or where to ask this, but I'm pulling my hair out. I hate developed campgrounds with a passion, but I've spent so much time trying to understand how to plan an actual dispersed camping trip - I just can't make progress on figuring this out. Last year I took a trip with some friends and we thought we understood, but we didn't. We looked up a place that we could see was designed as national forest near lake superior, looked up the specific area as much as we could on google, found positive confirmation that we could dispersed camp there, found some phone numbers for ranger stations nearby (we never got through to talk to anyone), but then we showed up and there were no camping signs EVERYWHERE. It's so fucking discouraging how inaccessible nature is :|
