That's awesome! I love to hear that I can help establish or feed an addiction to fishing and the outdoors :) We have lots of small stream fishing on our channel so . If you are going to buy just one fly rod and want to target small and medium and larger streams you may want to go a little heavier than what I used on this stream. A typical average fly rod for trout across stream sizes is a 9' 5wt. That's a little heavy for these little guys but maybe a 8'6" 4wt for small and medium streams would be good. One of the most informative and comprehensive discussions I have viewed on this topic. Also succinct and we'll organized. I really value the discussion on safety, that is rarely discussed. There is a small spring fed brook trout stream near me I had thought of exploring. I might carry a rescue whistle as well as there are occasional hikers and dog walkers in the area I like your foam caddis design and will give it a try. Tight lines.

Hey Brian. On these small streams, guys like Tom Rosenbauer say to stay out of the water as much as possible. What’s your feeling about that? Watching your videos shows you pretty much fishing from one side or the other but not moving up the middle.
It totally depends on what the water is like. If you have long slow pools, then try really hard not to disturb it and send waves up the pool with your feet! But if you're fishing rocky, pocket water streams like mine with lots of little plunge pools and small pockets then I will totally walk my way up the middle of the stream. The only reason to stay out of the stream other than spooking fish is during spawning season and not stepping on redds... but I don't fish brook trout streams in the fall.

I actually rarely get back to Dolgeville but I have explored a few streams and have found some mediocre success. I remember fishing a good one with Scott probably 20 years ago but I have no idea where we were of course. There are a few I have in mind that I haven't been to yet though but I will make it some day for sure. Most of the really good fishing I have found has been in the ADKs, Catskills or VT.
Damn 5 years ago. That was before the rise of the ticks here in the northeast lol. Forget finding 1 tick im lucky if I can step in the woods without finding 10 on me after. I started usijg premethrin on everything I wear out. Im one of the last people I know without lyme disease and I plan to keep it that way
I have yet to try premetherin but my stepfather uses it. I seem to get lucky or the ticks don't like me... I almost never find ticks on me and I check all the time.
THAT is actually a very good point (no pun intended). I go through fish handling and respecting the resource and everything but didn't think to mention about barbless. I do mention it in some of my other small stream videos though. Thanks for the feedback!
@@dylanmounsey7515 I find the small ones may flop off with barbless but the bigger ones tend to stay buttoned. If I'm fishing brookies there are usually pretty plentiful populations of fish so I don't mind them popping off without having to touch them. Quick release!
White Dog Outdoors yup, and sorry you did mention pinching the barbs in this video so good on you. I hate seeing people fish them on mepps spinners with trebles
@@dylanmounsey7515 Oh LOL... I did that video a couple of years ago and didn't remember that I did that. Yeah... those trebles will mess the fish up pretty good sometimes. If I fish spinning lures I remove the trebles and go with a small single hook.
I'm not familiar with the west coast but there are mountains nearby with streams. I know that people chase wild trout in streams just outside of LA... so I'm sure there are opportunities out your way somewhere!
