this video just made me realize that the reason i haven’t been drawing as much as i did before is because i’ve become too critical of my skills, i’m afraid of making mistakes, comparing myself to other talented and awesome creators, all of that made me too afraid of actually drawing anything, because i keep focusing on wanting everything to be perfect and “pretty”. i loved this exercise, i’ll definitely start doing it right after i’m done writing this comment XD. alsoooo, that ghibli quote warmed my heart ♥️♥️♥️♥️🥲🫶🏼

My old art teacher used to say that art is a great way of 'sublimating' our impulses into something else. Most of his work were acts of sublimation, his contempt, his anger, his sorrow but also his happiness, joy and kindness. I can only hope I learn to be as he was.

"Inspiration" is sometimes a release of energy or some psychic content that you had repressed. It is pleasure that escapes from the unconscious. It is closely related to insight. Maybe even closely related to love.

this is a BEAUTIFUL way of seeing inspiration. Thank you for sharing
@Galvvy
@Galvvy 6 месяцев назад
I don't think it's inherently pleasure based, cathartic yes, but pleasure specifically no. I recommend the book Art and the Creative Consciousness if you can get a hold of it, it's old but it really describes the "patterns" that people receive and interact with. The idea that everything is repression based sounds too Freudian to be really capturing the whole scope of inspiration and how or why people create. It definitely plays a part but people also create out of profundity or stress or any other means of drive. It's really deep down a revelation, it's about extending experience through a medium, the inspiration is merely the charge that sets off that.

I have always found trouble with finding inspiration in positive places. Years ago when I was painting at University in my 20s I was very depressed and found artists such as Munch and Van Gogh inspiring in that they used art to balance or express themselves, but I fought to find a way of doing this and motivating myself. What I did paint made people uncomfortable and some described it as ugly as it expressed feelings which I guess people felt should be kept private such as shame, vulnerability, fear, ambiguity and isolation. BUT, it did open dialogues about mental health and I now use my lived experience as a mental health professional. There is a beauty in that.

The foundational truth that I was taught (I’m 53 which from comments you’ve made I think puts me about 25 years older than you, I’m also British, perhaps art education has changed over time or is different where you learned) about what art must be is satisfying to the educated viewer. That includes both the content and the technical execution. Mine never is. I’m trying some courses on Domestika (currently a beginners course by a South American artist who goes by Puño) but it’’s hard going, in part because they are mostly in languages I don’t speak so I’m reliant on the subtitles. Inspiration is hard. I have a neurodivergence which means I’ve had to train myself to view everything through the lens of “How might a normal person see this?” Never having been normal, my brain has been trained over the decades (by being ridiculed when I’ve applied my own thinking to something) to seek the safest interpretation. Chronic depression and anxiety, which I have and are common in older adults with neurodivergence, also don’t help. I tried to get back into art, having been effectively banned from it by my art teacher in school at age 12, as it had been recommended as a way to manage depression. So far it’s just something else to fail at.

Hi Stephen, I'm actually 30, so I'm younger, but not that young (thank you though). So, coming from a background of struggle with mental health too, what I can say, in my humble experience, is that nothing will work if you don't pair it with therapy. I have drawn and made art since I can remember, and yet, in my darkest times, if I had tried to relate to my art only, I probably would have stayed in that dark place for much longer, and who knows, maybe I would have lost my passion for art. You probably have gone through therapy before, given the story you told me, but If you are struggling with your relationship with failure and depression, I strongly believe taking care of your mental health professionally will be beneficial for you and your art too. As for art education, I differentiate being an artist from being a professional artist. A professional art education will point to improving your skills and make your art objectively functional and pleasant. But what I try to do in my content, is also promoting Art as what it is in its more fundamental spirit: a form of self-expression. Switching from "making GOOD art" to "making ART", saved my spirit and eventually helped me with my career (I talk about it in my comeback video). It's not easy to make that switch, especially if we fear expectation and struggle with the idea of failure. It's going to take time and patience, but the main goal is to build a healthy passionate relationship between YOU and YOUR ART. Hope this helps. Wish you the best and good luck on your art journey :)

@@vespertiliu I mentioned age because I was wondering how art education in school may have changed since my day. The focus I recall being very much of mastery of technical skill, although I don’t recall much if any ‘teaching’. Art class was very much just being left to get on with it, those who already showed promise got personal attention but the rest of us were left to our own devices. Not even set tasks like, “Here’s a thing, draw it”. It was more “Find some materials and keep yourself busy for the hour and don’t bother me”. I remember spending a few weeks making a collage of cigarettes cut from magazine print adverts purely because there were a lot of old magazines laying around that had had other pictures cut from them and most. Of the uncut pages had cigarette advertisements on them (it was the early 1980s, there were a lot of cigarette adverts in magazines). I have been trying to get therapy and have had some counselling, which didn’t really help. Unfortunately, lack of investment in healthcare over all and mental health in particular means on the NHS (National Health Service) there’s a long waiting list so unless you’re brought in by the police due to attempting suicide or harming others you’re not a priority. Going private is quicker but horrendously expensive.

I really enjoyed your video, thank you for sharing it! Interestingly, I wrote a post yesterday inspired by one of your videos ("Why Adults Don't Draw" or something along those lines) that ignited a spark in me. It made me question why I often don't enjoy the outcomes of my creative efforts... Your recent video helped put some things into perspective, particularly the emotional aspect. Over the past few years, we’ve all been through a lot. The world is changing rapidly, and the events unfolding feel heavy and significant, sometimes even overwhelming. This made it challenging for me to create art, or so I thought. I was convinced that drawing out my fears would turn them into reality. However, the truth is, the realities of the world, with its wars and diseases, are frightening regardless of our actions or imaginations. My fears won’t change global issues, so perhaps I can channel them onto paper, just for myself, in my sketchbook. Maybe it can even be beautiful and not just scary. I have a love for dark art and often forget that something scary can also be beautiful. It can be emotional and may even help in dealing with and possibly healing from certain things. Of course, I'm not advocating romanticizing serious issues. If someone is feeling depressed or unwell, seeking professional advice is crucial. But I hope you grasp the essence of what I'm trying to convey here. It's akin to how del Toro's presents scary themes in his movies (like "Crimson Peak"), where there’s a story, secrets, and beauty amidst the fear. Thank you again, and I eagerly await your next video and updates on your projects! Best of wishes ~ 🌹🦇 🌹

What do you recommend for those of us who have aphantiasia? I try so hard to draw what 'comes' to me, but nothing. I have to look at images/references. I am unable to create from imagination. So frustrating 😞 my favourite colour/shade is black or vantablack, abyss but I also love fire, which is ironic as they are opposites. I also love textures. I keep drawing, and drawing and hoping one day I draw something purely my own.
