I started seeing buck with no antlers the end of December. Started going for walks in the 4th of January??My dog and I are up to 16.2 matched sets.The biggest set is a 3 year old 7.I have both his sheds from last year.He was an 8 last year.But for sure the same deer.The set this year were 600 yards apart.All 4 were in 700 yards from each other.Have only seen 1 buck with horns since January 5th.And I saw him last night.

Pretty awesome D!! Almost all of ours in WI and MN are still holding both, but I bet the big drop will be soon. Early to late Feb is our sweet spot.

@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 A big thing I have learned is look at your feet then out.Most I find are within 12 feet.But I spotted one the other day at 200 yards. Those low cut hayfields are great for seeing the good ones.Its those 4 inch spikes that are the real treasures. If you can spot them??Those big ones come easy.And I find my share of those 4 inch spikes..😉

Your habitat has got to be a lot different over there for bucks losing antlers early? We are much colder over here in MN and WI...but with the high supply of ag and decent cover they lose much later. You guys are more like some of the big woods areas...or northern settings like the UP of MI. There was an inclosure in the UP of MI...225" snowfall zone. Same deer genetics inside and outside of fence. Deer on the outside mostly lost before the end of the year. Deer on the inside with poorer overall habitat lost in late Feb/ early March. Only major difference was deer on the inside of the fence were pellet fed.

Picked up my first deer shed of the year right in front of a camera yesterday. Winter has been so mild and majority of bucks in my area are holding so I'm waiting until the cameras tell me otherwise. Good video Jeff

good video! I have hunted sheds for years and found a couple booners! My number one tip: always take binoculars!!! Save about 20 miles of walking and answers that age old question " is that cornstalks or the new record shed?"

Since we haven't had much snow in Central Wyoming, I've been out clearing dead fall and mowing brush, etc, for my new food and browse plots. I'm hoping we get some snow, so I can burn the rest of my timber and brush piles. While I'm at it, I'll be searching for more sheds to make handles for my new kitchen cabinets. I do my work mid day, and stay out of bedding areas and it doesn't seem to bother them. In fact, I had an eight point step out yesterday curiously watching me paint a blind.

I’m going to go look for sheds in late April when the snow melts, right now it’s -32 C and 3 feet of snow! My goals are to search my deer bedding grounds and elk bedding ground, there’s a monster 6x6 elk I found bedded by my house.

Food sources are good spots but you rarely ever find a shed in a plot. Deer feed for 1-3 hrs a day in your plot. They are in bedding and cover the rest of the day. I have found over 100 sheds in the past 3 yrs in southern Wi. I find 90% or more of my sheds in daytime or nighttime bedding areas. If you have a great winter food source your going to want to look 100 yards to a 1/4 mile away from the plot. Do a quick sweep of your plot, around the edges and in the middle but you will be lucky to find anything in a plor. A deer can make a lot of tracks and sign in 1 hour walking in circles in a food plot feeding. A deer will only make one set of tracks back to its bedding area and stay there for most of the day. Daytime bedding is #1. Nighttime bedding is #2. Travel corridors are #3. And FOOD is last #4. That’s my opinion, does anyone else agree with me and has had similar experiences?

I find a LOT of sheds in plots around the country in many states every year. Easy scoops. BUT, the plot actually has to have activity in them, at this time of the year and when they are dropping. They are very active in their feeding areas...food plots...moving, chasing, playing...very social. Again, has to be an active feeding area. Have found a lot at feeders too. Consistent finds in very small areas... Daytime bedding is awesome too! My 2nd favorite. Amazing how many I have found around ditches and fence crossings too.

Hey Jeff, you talk often about management of properties that have great open areas to adapt levels of cover, feed, bedding, etc. But we hunt mostly wooded/swamp mix, what are some ways to increase food, cover, and buck management of a property like that?

Hey Jeff, have Dylan help you look for sheds. He’s pretty sharp. He was on my property a few weeks ago and found a very fresh dropped antler. A little spike at that. Keep up the great content and hands on advise. Also, Dylan is a good man! 😊

I was waiting for the "south facing slope" comment...lol. still, the only thing I disagree with. The coldest winds during the winter, in my life have generally come from the north. Deer definitely bed on the south side ALOT during the winter. And so would I.

@Kurtdog63
@Kurtdog63 3 года назад
Best shed I ever found was in DECEMBER, but I totally agree. Don't look too early, or your bucks will be dropping them somewhere else. Use trail cams to monitor. I have tr cams showing some bucks holding their antlers even into March.
