It still works, but they have really nerfed the variety. I did this on last Sunday and it took waaaaay longer to get a really good freighter. Remember, the freighter colors and shape will always be the same in that system, but the class type and inventory size will change. The problem is that random number generator is set really low, so the class and inventory size might change just a little tiny bit. Keep going back if you find the color and shape you want, it might take 6 hours but you will get the class and inventory size you want.
@@JasonPlaysNMS Cool, thanks for answering so quickly (and at all). I'm farming for my freighter right now but still trying to find the right body shape/color. Is there a way to determine that ahead of time or that purely RNG as well?
Jason Plays so I went ahead and just grabbed my first one. It’s not good, but I wanted to see what they were about and I really like them, will it be possible to eventually get a better one? Granted the first one is free, but I’m just curious if I’ll be able to exchange for a better one later
@@Rena_Skuxy Yes, you can. Freighters can be traded out the same way personal ships can. If you're trading up you'll have to trade in your frigate and pay the remainder.
I like the fact that he's honest. Instead of lying and saying, "How to find an S class freighter in MINUTES, takes NO EFFORT AT ALL" He says that it's gonna take time and effort. I wish more videos were like this. Genuinely good video.
Hey jason i watch all your videos and thank you for your knowledge but I've been going to the same (prosperous) system with the freighter i want for 2 days now over 40 hours and still no s class am i missing something or is that hard to find
FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO SAVE A LITTLE BIT OF TIME FOR THIS when you dock, just pull out your scanner and look at the ship, you can see the all the needed ship stats that way so you don't need to run up to the captain until you find one you want.
@@destinygaming5293 how so? You still warp to the encounter and kill the pirates, this is to save you from needing to run all the way up the freighter's stairs and dialogue
213fenix thank you very much for that information, I just now realized I could save so much time grinding by doing that. Thanks PS I feel very stupid now for wasting time on the captain.
Johnny Bravo wait, there are different types of freighters? I’ve only come across the small ones then, but all things considered I don’t understand why I would get a large one. You can add more slots easily through building.
@@Slender_Man_186 Freighter size doesn't matter much anymore since you can expand slots, but they're tiered and each tier has a certain base amount of slots and usually better stats.
Cabalistic Designs I know about tiers, my current freightor and the only one I’ve owned is S Class, but it’s a lot smaller than all of these, looks nothing like these ones. It has circular cargo holds on it, these ones are flat, sleek, no external cargo holds from what I can see.
I've been grinding for my S Class upgrade for a couple of days now and there are some things to note not in this video: 1. You can tell the class and slots as soon as you land on the freighter. No need to run all the way up to the bridge. Simply look through your analysis visor as soon as you exit your ship and that information will be included. 2. Until you get used to seeing a lot of them (I can spot the different sizes really easily now), you can tell the size by the number of cargo pods along the sides. For the Star Destroyer types: 6 indentations with two each (12 total) for a large, 4x2 for a medium, 2x2 for a small. For the tall, boxy types: 7x3 for large, 5x3 for medium, 3x3 for small. You can see them all on the wiki if you're not sure. It's entirely looks; the interior is the same on every freighter. The class will determine the number of slots (currently 34 max cargo, 10 tech for S). 3. It is a grind! I must have been very lucky on my first couple, getting an S class within maybe 10 battles each, but now on my third it's been probably 150-200 in 3* economy systems with no S class yet. You're not missing much by taking a solid A class, so consider this and know what you may be in for. 4. The Star Destroyer types seem most common, followed by the breadbox types. 5. The ship colorization is in game but doesn't seem to work yet. However, this is probably going to be fixed soon. Focus on the shape you like; you can fix the color later.
Jason! I think you might have forgotten something : Upon reloading, if you warp to a same system again, the same capital ship is going to be there, in a space battle. Capital ship spawns are actually hard-coded, and attached to a specific system, so in order to get a different ship, you'd have to reload and then target another system - this allows you to get one that looks just the way you want, or to finally locate a system with a wealthy economy ; or, to get the same ship but maybe in a different class (it will spawn with the same cosmetics, but sometimes a different class), reload and return to the same system. On a related note : I think the Subreddit and the sharing of coordinates might be useful in finding so-called "perfect" capital ships. Of course, using a portal to travel to the right system wouldn't work, and one would probably have to use a black hole navigational map to get around to the correct system. And even then, I don't know if the freighter random generation would be the same for every player, although I suspect it might be, given that the Ships, Multi-tools and even Planets follow this rule of common generation. Didn't mean to right a paragraph but oh well :D
I wish I knew as much as you about this mess lmao. I'm wondering if what you say is happening to me. It's the same ship everytime but different class. No idea if itll ever be a s class or not.
That was hilarious, "dont shoot the freighter! What ever you do dont shoot the frieghter stop shooting ur close" ---- shoots the frieghter hahah. That made me laugh!
Hey Jason, I've seen that you've been checking and keeping track of these comments even in 2020 and I just want to say I've been playing no man's sky since late 2019 and I stopped playing it in December 2019 and today I played it for the first time in almost a year and I literally just realised how amazingly helpful your videos have been for me while I've been playing the game. You've always been honest, you've always helped anyone who watches your videos and checked every comment and the game itself has defined me since I grew up and it is amazing but it would never be what it has been without you and your videos. It would probably be something else I wouldn't understand and would only be interested in for the time being, but I found your channel and the game had gotten much better for me back then and me revisiting it today just made me realise how valuable these videos have been. Thank you Jason.
This method still works. I got an S-class on third try tho. And instead of manual save everytime before warping, I just make going in-out of the ship 2 times a habit
Took me like 21 hours a few days ago to get my S-Class Resurgent Freighter to spawn (Venator Family with 6 indents in the sides). It was rather exhausting, but now it's done and over with.
As always, another great video Jason! After finding a wealthy system that had the freighter look I wanted I ended up settling for the A class 34+4 version after 10 straight hours of reloading trying for the S class. Update: Well, it got to me...I couldn't settle for the A. After another 4 hours and 66 encounters I finally got the S class! Thanks again for the video!
Just got into NMS recently, have about 25-30 hours played, and honestly your videos have helped so much, at first it was overwhelming, all the information, and the different materials, but after about 2-3 hours of play time I realized this is my new favorite game, much love and thanks for your hard work and dedication to this game.
A couple of things that can speed this up quite a bit. First, once you warp into the system, before you engage the hostiles, go to the space station and exit your ship to create an auto save. If you don't get the freighter you want, just reload your auto save. Second, your don't need to speak to the Commander to check the freighter class if you're only looking fire the elusive S rank. Once you exit your ship on the freighter, just pull out your analysis visor and look at one of thrall freighter walls. It should tell you the class and slot counts.
how does this even work??? you exit at the space station... then you go check the freighter you exit at the freighter. save file overwritten. now what?
@@silvereagle404 It's been months since I played but if I remember correctly the game doesn't save when you exit your ship on a freighter you haven't purchased.
2022 March UPDATE: Used this technique YESTERDAY and got an S class capital ship after approximately 3 hours and around 50 reloads (I was trying to keep count but I think I might have missed a couple). A couple ways to speed it up: First, you can dock on the nearest starbase while the battle is going on (don't talk to the captain over radio yet), and get out to autosave, then reload the autosave (instead of reloading the manual save from the surface), the ship randomizes every time, including different models/styles (You may get the same ship a couple times in a row though, just by luck, I had this particular A class with the same exact same model pop up 6 times in a row once). Second, you don't have to actually talk to the captain, you can use the scanner and just look at the ship after you land. One thing to watch out for (which he mentions), the S class ships often have the same design/shape as the A class ships, so you can't always tell by recognizing it from space, you have to kill the pirates and land on the ship.
Here's another useful tip for this: if you've been warping to different systems to try and find a freighter model you like and you've found it, instead of just memorizing the system name and re-warping to it every time you reload, you can, once you warp into the system, fly into the space station and create an autosave. Then, you can reload from that, and each time you do, the battle will be there. Just be careful not to accidentally create another autosave, and maybe just write down the system name anyways in case you do and have to go back to the first manual save.
It's a cold and rainy Saturday morning here and I've just set aside hours to find an S rank Freighter today. Literally the first Freighter battle I found was an S rank, I can't believe my luck! Mind you its 34 Storage Space it a bit spread out and far from perfect, I'm still extreemly happy about it! It's a huge upgrade from my previous B rank Freighter. Thankyou for making this video and videos like this, to help casual players like myself, its greatly appreciated!
Wait 3 hours. Save before you warp. Once you find a space battle check the style of the ship. If you like it do the battle and then check if its an s class. If its not just reload and go to the same system. It will have the same style of ship but in a different class. Do that 30-40 times and hopefully you'll get an s class of the ship you want.
@@JonathanFTL Might have to give this a try. But to be clear, i go to station and auto save after i finish the battle? Right? This would make sense couse if i turn down a freighter and leave it, it kinda warps away in 5-10 seconds.
If and when one happens to enter a system with a freighter under attack and if and when it's appearance is the one one is dreaming about; All one has to do is enter the station prior to any correspondence with the comm's, exit their ship, and then reenter and leave the station. The comm's message requesting assistance will still be there. Click on assist, and kill all pirates. Note or Hint or as they say today, spoiler alert. An "S" class freighter with an undetermined number of slot will only be available, if and when one has destroyed "8" pirates. Any thing less, will not provide an "S" class freighter. Thus if one only kills 6, and the threat is over. Simply reload and try again. One doesn't have to enter the ship.
*edit* I just got an S class frieghter. Took 10 times and I found it in a "wealthy" system. I was looking in a "flourishing" system also but that was only giving B and C class. The Wealthy gave A and eventually the S. It doesnt matter if you hit the freighter and they start attacking you. You can still fly into the docking bay and speak with the Captain. If you buy the ship, it will still try and attack you, just warp and go back to it.
@@sierrajayaweera1028 did I say that wealthy systems always give A class? Nope. While I was playing though that is the only class I received in a wealthy system. I was reloading and jumping between a flourishing system and wealthy system. I think I only jumped 3 or 4 times in to a wealthy system. During those jumps I only came across a couple of A class and 1 S class.
Im seriously bugged withthis S class freighters i have tried and entire sleepless day and havent got it so settled for sentinal destroyer A class 34/9 slots felt good since ithas34 slots ass well butdoes s class offer more slots?
@@sierrajayaweera1028 damn sorry to hear that hey. My S class only has 34 and 9. There are 8 empty spaces in the General and 5 empty spaces in the technology so I'm not sure if slots can be added or not. I know with my normal S class fighter I was able to exploit the bug where I can buy the empty slots. So now my small S class fighter has 48 General and 21 Technology. It might not be a bug but it does require close to if not over 1 billion credits to do.
I didn't know about the 3 hour thing so this video helped a bunch. I've been searching around and warping but wasn't finding anything. I have all this money from your money methods but I couldn't find a freighter to blow it on :P
You can save some time by using your scanner in the hanger to check the ship class, and if you find a ship you like, before you shoot the fighters, make a quick save in the space station to lock in that style and size. Though, these tricks would drop the video length below that obnoxious “I need money” ten minute limit
Thanks for this! Here's a Time saver. When you enter system with freighter battle happening, don't fight, go first to space station and jump out of your ship. (autosave). Then go back out, defeat enemy ships, dock on freighter, get out of your ship and scan immediately to see class. Reload autosave and you'll start from in the space station IN THE SYSTEM and miss out the warp jump. Getting out of your ship inside the freighter you have just protected does not create autosave. Did this. got S class on 44th attempt. That's after 13 A class, 15 B class, 15 C class. Still hours of time. Maybe they make it this way so you are SO HAPPY when you finally get the S.
Seeing the struggle for an S class makes me feel sick.. my second rescue mission after my free one was a full length S class (destroyer I think?) And they wanted 117M or somthing >_< It still haunts me every time I enter my B class dreadnought
To save a bit if time you can scan the inside of the freighter when you land...Like how we scan ships and it shows what type and inventory. Thx for sharing!!
A tip for how I got my s class freighter that made the process quicker. When I warped and ended up getting a freighter rescue I immediately go to the space station, get out of my ship to create an auto save, the proceeded to destroy the enemy ships. If the freighter wasn’t an S I reloaded autosave, got in my ship, left space station and I’m right in the middle of the freighter war. Repeat until you get an S Class.
Jimbo obies yep if it’s the type you want and not worried about the color just go to space station first get out of your ship to auto save then do the battle. Just keep reloading auto save until you got your s class.
If you have the money to pay outright for an S class, that would be the best way. For the free freighter, making a save after the battle negates... well, the free part of it. So if you are willing to put the time in and you dont already have a freighter, do it jasons way. Im not too worried about it though, i wound up with a 33 slot class A capitol freighter for free by sheer dumb luck.
You can get around all time sensitive things such as egg spawn timers and this by changing time in your date and time setting in your console...dont have to close application or anything!! Its such a savior for people that wanna dive into the game and get what they want/need with little to no issue
It took me AGES to find my freighter. I managed an A class max slot freighter just by playing the game. I made the mistake of trading the current freighter I had before taking off my resources and lost alot of good stuff. I'm not sure if they fixed that or not but either way, I was just happy to have a max slot freighter haha. Since they nerfed the freighter warp drives, I dont mind having the lower stats.
You can streamline the process a little. You don't need to answer the call after the battle and you don't need to see the captain, just hop out of your ship and use your visor to scan the ship.
Does no one realize that once you find a freighter you like, you can go into the space station and jump out of your ship and autosave before engaging in battle? The freighter will always look the same, but the class will vary. Then you don't need to warp all the time. Save a LOT of time and warping.
and don't have to fight the pirates or wait for captain invitation. Just fly straight to the ship and land. This cuts the time for each attempt in half (roughly). And even if something goes wrong you will still have that manual save one jump away as backup.
Hint, "S" class freighter's will have at least 8 fighter's to destroy first. Less than that, it's never an "S" class. The only other issues is, though it may be an "S" class you just fought for, there's "NO WAY" of knowing how many slots it has until after the battle and you talk to the present commander. Because there has to be at least 8 fighter's to destroy it took me 42 reloads. During which time I had to fight 27 "S" class battles (8 fighter's to destroy) before I finally was offered a 34 slotted ship. But that's how RNG works. Some get lucky and it all comes together on the first, some like myself, are not so lucky.
I recently attained a S-Class freighter from a battle where only 5 pirates were present, so the number of pirates present doesn’t seem to affect if a S-Class freighter can spawn at all.
So.....I did what you said Jason and I must be one luck guy!!! The first battle I warped into produced a C class freighter. So I reloaded my save and bam.....I got a S class. I was so surprised!!!!! Thank you for the tip!!!
when I come across battles I bring my regular ship, the pirates are like "THIS is their backup?!" I let them laugh. Then I throw on guren no yumiya or shoukei no shikabane and call in my freighter and my 50 bajillion frigates. Then the pirates are like "fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu"
@@TV-cv1eb just remember to manual save bc during/after fights your freighter won't allow u to land, and those space cops just keep coming. I recommend that u have a good (at least 15) combat frigates so you have an entire fleet of ships for ur battle. If u get bored or are boutta die, just reload that manual save and then go on ur way without worrying about the sentinels.
A lot has changed since this video was made, an update might be a good idea. I tried this for about 3-4 real time hours and decided it was for the birds. I fly around tier three economy systems and look for the freighter I want. I've found several S class but the highest number of cargo slots I've found is 19 on any class. But derelict freighters are fun, I don't mind upgrading it. We can also change the colors now so you don't have to look for one with the colors you want.
@Dan Martinez you have to play 3h and warp 5 times then create an manual savepoint warp again. Do the space battle, reload the manual save if you dont get an s class (3% in rich systems)
One thing i notis is when you have killed the pirates and get the call, what rank the pilot is "dude that invite you onboard" telling you what class the ship is.. Captain XXXX = you can reload as it is only a B or C class. Admiral XXX = Is an A class. i have not gotten to a S class yet so dunno if Admiral is also an S class
If you don't take the first free freighter, the second one they offer you is still free, and they are free until you finally accept one. I got very lucky and snagged a 32 slot on my second battle, for free, no reloads.but you could save and reload on the free fight, get an S class for zero units!
This still works I just did it, took me 2 three hour playtime resets then about 12 manual reloads before the battle jump as I kept getting C class but finally a 34/9 S Class
I also found that if you go through black holes, you tend to show up in a battle and usually a large freighter, don't know if its always an s class, requests your help.
Not sure if it's been mentioned but if you find a freighter you like but the class isn't good and you have a friend, (or spare console) to log into the freigher you can keep reloading and even though your friend will stay on the freighter each time you load back in and fly into the ship it's class will change.
Jason Plays I thought that my luck was good, but my friend was playing later and not only got an s-class freighter on his first warp, but also got an s-class multitool with max slots on his first try looking in a space station.
Bit of a necro here, but wanted to tell you guys this still works as of New year's eve 2020. I got super lucky - literally one reload and I got an S-class. Thanks a lot for your video dude, you've got a new subscriber! Oh and it was an "opulent" economy, hope that helps anyone struggling.
Do I need to wait for 3hours before any og the 5 jumps? Or can i play and jump at random and Just wait with the 5th jump until i played for 3 hours? And Thanks Jason. I find your videos very helpful 👍
I stayed in one system doing random missions for the 3 hours and the first time I warped I found a battle. I don't think warp amounts matter, just the time
Yeah, I noticed that too. The time has always been required for me, but the warps not so much. 5 is the "recommended" number but I have seen them happen on 2 before.
Just an fyi if it hasn't been said. You don't have to run up to the captain to find out what ship it is. Land and hop out and hit Analysis Visor ("f" on the pc) and it will tell you what ship it is. Saves that long ass haul up to the bridge.
This method no longer works after beyond update, but if your lucky there is a chance that one of the systems near you will have a Sclass. Each system you warp to will have there own freighter and they vary from system to system but if you revisit a system it will have the same exact one, down to every detail. Next best option now is to take your pick of the lot. May not be able to cheese in a Sclass like before but atleast you still get the opportunity to take the best one you have available to you via your warp distance. Follow same saveing method and when you find one you like fight off the pirates, then enter the ship, to make the process faster I boarded then viewed the freighter through my visor to see its class, reload if you dont like and take it if you do, if you dont like it however make sure you go to a different system, if you return it will be the same.
Fun facts. You do not have to answer coms, they will not warp off and you do not need to talk to them once you land. Use your visor, that will tell you the class of the freighter. Also, once you find the freighter design you like, don't enter the battle. Fly to the closest planet and drop a save beacon, make a manual save. Then fly back up and fight. If it isn't S class, reload manual save, fly, fight, check. Rinse repeat until you have an S class. I quite literally just used that method and after about 20 reloads, I had myself an S class Sentinel freighter.
Found a Freighter S-class and I quit and went to bed and I found out in the morning that it didn't save and I lost it wish I saw this guide before I did what I did
If you reload, but if you take too long farming or making money then you will have to restart that 3 hour timer. Remember the system and go right back to it after the timer reaches 3 hours.
I followed your guide to the letter. My second freighter was a A class 32 slot! I counted my blessings and grabbed it rather than rinse repeat for another 9 hours.
@@JasonPlaysNMS oh the pleasure's all mine, also you're the FIRST you tuber that's EVER replied to any of my comments and the fact that you know who TheRadBrad is just makes it waaay cooler, thanks bro!!!
my 1st freighter was C-class, quite mediocre, but then i changed it to A-class badass huge freighter. i like it so much. maybe once i will find S-class :)
So you know where i seen someone else posted so i tried it along with Jason's input. So you know the first 3 hours you will not find a capital freighter when you warp into battle. I went to every 3 star and same old freighters. i waited like Xaine said after watching video and this one a few times and he said it was hard coded that you do not get a capital ship your first time. After the ship comes the first time decline it. Wait 3 more hours and warp 4-5 more times but same before each warp. and a capital ship will be at every 3 star. After that you have to keep reloading to get a S class. unless you want a A class that 34-9 slots.
Thanks Jason!!! Still works after patch. Took me 2 days, probably 6hrs and lost count on reloads. When I scanned after landing and saw it was a S class I ran up the stairs like my a** was on fire saying...please don't freeze over and over...
A little trick as of Sept 2022... If he had flown to the space station after seeing that red and black freighter. He could have jumped out of his ship (auto save) and reload the auto save. It re-loads that system AND keeps the freighter. BUT it will change the class. It still is a low % (2% chance in a 3 star system) to get an S class. But at least it keeps the style/size you might be looking for. Pros: Not needing to do space battles Keep the style/size Cons: Still takes time, and is a bit of a grind (Took me 2.5 hours of reloading before an S showed up. BUT it kept what I was looking for) Hope this helps! Cheers!
reloaded like 20 times and only got to a B. Next day got an A class in about 12 tries - still no S. Also the specs for the same system look the same to me so I'm going to different rich systems each time
@@JasonPlaysNMS Got an update for you. Not gonna lie, I'm extremely lucky, but your guide absolutely helped. I've been saving before each jump. The space battle finally showed up. I started hunting and pecking through wealthy systems trying to not only find a freighter I liked but to consistently find the same one after each load, which was a challenge. Finally got it down. Found a rich Korvax system with an all black sentinel freighter with white highlights that I like. Warp in the second time AND IT SPAWNED AN S CLASS MAX SLOT. Only an hour into the hunt. Absolutely floored. Thanks again for the tips! Ill see if I can post a pic on the Reddit community.
I got an S-rank command ship without paying a single credit the day after I bought the game. I was so new that I didn't even know it was possible to own a freighter until the moment it asked me if I wanted to take command of the ship.
Just commenting to let everyone know that this DOES still work up to date! Took me HOURS but I got the S Class freighter I wanted. Happy hunting everyone! (I almost lost patience and faith but a few reloads of my manual save and I got it!)
How many S-class freighters did you come across? Just wondering for my own experience. I honestly couldn't care less about shape right now. I just want to replace my C-class Sentinel freighter lol
michelin teisen you can always get a new one whether you want to randomly come across a good one by chance or you can grind for one with the save technique
This helped out so much, tried this and got a B class Freighter. Yeah it’s not an S yet, but it’s better then the C class I had, more storage space, and it looks reminiscent of a Star Destroyer. Thank you heaps, you got a new sub right here.
Followed the tips her. Found a Gek Opulent system with six orbital bodies. Picked up a blue and gold Gek style S class large freighter. Took about thirty reload tries. Stay focused. Don’t be weak and take an A class. I turned down seven A class before the S class spawned.
I can see that, but to be fair the S Class ships are technically the best you can get. Any ship with the max number of slots is definitely great though, even if it is lower than S Class.
i'm new to no man's sky. would you suggest for me finishing the artemis mainstory line first or should i already begin with trying to build something to make constant income to buy a decent ship?
Bro, that last B class freighter, I found that same one except it was blue, white and black. It is HUGE. Ive come across three S class since then and none of them have been better than that B Class. I have my game saved in the hanger of an S class if you or anyone else needs it.
Did you ever end up finding one? I've been at this for so long now. I've done this exact method several times. I've tweaked it multiple ways. I'm about ready to give up. I decided to do it one more time exactly as in the video, and I'm on my 40th reload and STILL nothing.
Warp to wealthy, when you find freighter you like immediately go to space station, get out to autosave, get in go check out the ship if not s or a then reload. then you don't have to go through warping animation constantly and can just fly out of the space station every time to see the ship change stats.
This absolutely works on Xbox still. After the three hours I started warping one at a time to a wealthy system and manual saving. Once I got to the last warp I'd start taking note each wealthy system I had the encounter in. When I found the freighter I wanted if it wasn't an "s" class I took a picture of the system it was in. Reloaded my save, found the system, didn't warp to it but instead placed a marker in it, went back to the planet I placed the last manual save, placed another one. Now I was able to find it easy till I got my S class of that model. Hope this helps!!!
I must be super lucky, when I started the game I didn't even know about fighting to get frieghters for free. But I was getting attacked, so I killed them. The got that messageto board the ship. Talked to the captain and got an A class frieghter =)
Once you defeat the ships and board the freighter and get out of your ship you get an auto save. You can scan the ship to see the class and slot stats. You can also reload that autosave and it will re-roll the slot stats but not the class or the physical appearance. It's what I've been able to do on an A class. still trying to find an S class. update: not sure it works likes that normally. I may have just stumbled onto a bug that went away after restarting the game.
So is the RNG gona now with beyond update. Im trying this method and when i warp into the system that is flourishing i have the same ship same color same class everytime i reload my save.
Hey Jason, First of all thanks for the video :) And the grind is real. It took me around 2 days of gameplay (20H) to get S class and it wasn't the design I was looking. After that time you don't care anymore the design. If it's S class and big enough you will go for it :)
