It is a known fact that knowing and doing things accurately and in the principle way is the best way to do anything. For example as a repairman if you are not able to troubleshoot and diagnose problems accurately, there might be serious damages on motherboards, probably unsolvable ones.
So, this video is about an Asus k550LC laptop which is completely turned OFF and all voltages are absent. The only present voltage on motherboard is 19 volt input. After checking motherboard and ohm amount, I realized that there is short circuit in PWM 3.3V and PWM 1.05V and they are shorted to GND. I used boardview to find the shorted direction and realize that it is related to internal pins of CPU.
And I should say that, as new generation CPUs are onboard and are integrated with south bridge, they are expensive components and it is very important to troubleshoot and diagnose motherboard problem accurately.
In this video I showed you how to test and diagnose if onboard CPU is ok or failed. But if you understand the concept fully, you can learn the principles of diagnose, easily test and make sure other chips are ok or failed.

I haven't actually seen anyone test the actual chip for shorts. Good tip.

wow rhank you sir, you are the closest explanation i found, you took the time also to remove the cpu. Now i can come to the conclusion that my asus x455ld rev 2.1 m/b has shorted cpu. At the beginning the cpu was hot when adaptor was plugged in, 19v was present, 3v /5v not present, 3 volt rails shorted, and so are many capacitors near by cpu was shorted 😅 great video sir

Nice. It's far less risky to test a potentially shorted CPU with a meter. :)

So the CPU can short the motherboard..., I see..., never encountered this in my hardware life, thanks for this..., maybe it will help understand what is the problem with my motherboard...
@josephdragojevich7041

It doesn’t short the WHOLE motherboard just a line or two ON the board. If the cpu has an internal short then only the lines that connect to the cpu will be shorted, usually the main power rails aka VRM. You could have a very many different issues causing a motherboard not to work that have nothing to do with the main CPU. Every IC (chip) on the board from WiFi to usb controllers need their own power, some that run at the same voltages may share a power line but the best way to find the actual problem is to start with the circuitry that powers the chips that control/“deal” with whatever isn’t working. Like for example if a system isn’t posting to bios it could be an issue with not just the cpu but ram or even firmware/PCH. Check their power rails to rule them out. If all power systems check out then it’s time to investigate data lines. That is a whole other barrel of almost literal snakes to deal with..

@@josephdragojevich7041 Sorry to necro this thread but NOBODY could tell me whats wrong with my laptop.It is only 2 years old and a week ago it turned off and never turned on again.No leds,no indication of charge or anything.And funny enough chokes above the VRMs get real hot even tho the computer doesnt turn on when its connected to any sort of power source like straight from the wall or battery on the laptop itself.Sent to 4 different computer shops,they simply say that the cpu MIGHT be short circuited.They can't say for sure lol.

how to tell if the CPU is actually shorted or if the normal resistance is just low enough to trigger the beep in diode mode? i have seen CPU's show as if they have a short on the power rail but in reality they do not as the device functions normally. without having a "known-good" to compare, how would one go about determining if it is an actual short or normal low resistance reading?

Without a schematic, check resistance of coil or cap near cpu to ground. Generally you’ll see 1.2 ohms or higher. If it’s less than an ohm, I’d say there is a high chance that it’s cpu related. Without schematic, only way to know for sure is either dismantle the circuit until short is gone, or remove cpu and check if short is gone. Either way, it’s a pain in the ass but worth it in the end

if it drags the cpu power rails down to 0 or very close then you know whats going on
@josephdragojevich7041
@josephdragojevich7041 3 года назад
@@martijn4740 lol what do you mean if it drags the cpu power rails to zero or close? You do realize that in most devices, well anything engineered properly, that the power rail won’t stay on if there is a short, over current protections kick in and shut it down. This happens within milliseconds..

Hm, you can calculate the resistance of a modern CPU like this: Maximum wattage is 65W. Core voltage is 1.05V. R=U^2/P is 0.017R. Most multimeters will just show 0.01R or 0.02R. So this measurement can not say the CPU is damaged. Only a thermal camera could show a hot-spot on CPU surface. If you do not see a hot-spot but a uniform heat dissipation, then it's likely the CPU is still okay. It's also possible, that a little, embedded capacitor, mounted directly onto the CPU, has a short-circuit. I have found two times. CPU was still okay! This I would say is then really the last chance.

I'm working on an ASUS X541U. 3.3V and 1.0VSUS are shorted to ground. When the charger is pluged, 5V is present and the CPU is heating up. May I conclude that there is a short ball short or an internal short in the CPU? Or is there another possibility?
