This has actually happened that I participated in a Game Jam and worked with team members which for some reason I thought was a license to assume that I could partner with them for all future projects. And then I made the biggest mistake of not figuring out how to program to make a game for my own portfolio and rather depending on the programmer to finish the coding. And halfway through the project the programmer literally vanished. No trace of him whatsoever. In the end, I had to sit down to do it by myself.
Wow I was looking for some cool game dev knowledge, wasn't expecting this amazing vid - as someone who has been involved in different startups (not just games) this advice was spot on. Nice for me too, I feel like I've been looking at gaming differently than other industry, but really starting a game is just a startup. Thanks for the vid
A lot of people come up to me wanting to make a game for free. usually its MMOs with no networking experience. But essentially, not everyone is going to be as passionate as you, but everyone loves money.
Yeah, it can take some time... It's all about finding passion (which is scarce). If you're still into game development I could come and help. (no funds needed) Just let me know
This is some great content, I love making games and seeing videos like this is really helpful. Currently a solo developer but thinking about starting a team and hiring some people. Subscribed, cheers and good luck to everyone and their projects!
I'm a pixel artist struggling to find a good dev team. It's a mess since I'm also developer and very experienced artist, and want certain results. People starts motivated and then disappear. "Don't mess with people you don't know"....holy words...
How about finding someone in a meetup and before working together on your project you develop a quick 1 week game to launch or not but to completion to test out how it's like to work with them? Have you tried that or know any people who have and how did that go?
I have tried this. I do this often with freelancers that I hire, I never start them on a main project, I have the do a few smaller things and watch how they respond, the quality of their work, etc.Its been a reliable strategy for me.
I aprishiate the time you have put aside to help those starting in the community. Your advice is practical and informative. However I do believe you could better optimise your impact with more compact videos. Breaking down your insite into 5 or so, 60sec chunks. Keep up the good work.
I am just beginning UE5 and have been working on an island in the engine atm, I have some great ideas for a game, story, etc. I am just focusing on building the details on the landscape first. I’d love a partner to work with but I feel I am still learning on my own and wouldn’t want my partner getting frustrated if I am considered slow or don’t yet know something lol.
I have recently went through a lot of UE4 blueprint and c++ classes and I am starting to try to develop my own game but I am looking to find some people to collaborate with. I own my own service company so I have limited time, but I will continue with whatever free time I have. I compose music, write my own songs, draw, 3D model a little, I know a little c++ and blueprint, and animation and have created some of my own materials. Always looking to go further. Not really concerned with money at this moment, that is something I rather worry about when I have more reasoning to.
i read your comment , im a computer science student, i love playing games and creating games so i started learning unity in my free time i made a simple 2D game just for practice.., i don't know about 3D design or modelling but can write code( not an expert) but i love coding my skills are not that bad in c++ java that is what i learned until now.. if you want someone to work with im ready..
I have an idea for game. I’m new to this but I think there is a lot of potential. I’m probably going to need a need a team but I wouldn’t expect anyone to work for free. How does the payment process work, and how does ownership in the game work? If I don’t want to give up ownership, are there people I can just pay to code the game for me?
Champion 61 I may be up for helping you with your game. Check out some of the games I made at studentweb.kennesaw.edu/~wshu/ My email is on the site, shoot me one if you're interested.
Tim, do you think it's too late to start developing games if I'm almost 30 and have no programming experience? I could probably be a good writer but I don't know if it's too late for me especially because of the programming thing. Cheers from Spain!
I'm not Tim, but I would say it's never really to late, especially in today's time with unity, unreal engine and so on. Even though I would recommend to make something small in your freetime to test if you get something finished( follow his advice about making pong, asteroids or so as a first small project and to get to know the tools) Since you're more on the artside I would recommend UE4 because as a friend said once:"If you're a programmer use unity. If you're an artist take UE" and I think that holds true because with "blueprints" in UE you can build really a lot withoud ever needing to write a single line of code. And if you really want to go deeper you can still learn c++ and build games with this( also I felt like UE is easier to get into, but that could just be a preference thing, you should test one and if it doesn't fit, try the other or go to a completely other engine) tl;dr: it's never really to late, just start something small first( as he emphasises alot ^^) and go from there Cheers from someone currently partially undergoing Tims "mistakes I made" list ^^
Unreal, Cry Engine have a marketplace to sell assets as well as Turbosquid and many others. Great way to build a portfolio, help beginners with there dreams, and get some money’s! :)
I’m am going to try to make a game called infinite exploration. It is based off of the same idea of Minecraft with randomly generated terrain with different planets. Anyone want to help me try to make it?
I want a jam team not a rock star team. Where are all the retired old school peeps that just love games. Just want to be infamous not famous. How do I go about that?? PS I don’t have what they call the social skills, but I have a 4 puter sound and game studio with a public versioning server. Next step stops me. Tried to do it all, but is to much for me alone. UE4 only don’t want to Cry...
Alright.. I’m 12, I use clickteam fusion, I need somebody to make music for me, I need an artist to speed the process (I’m an artist), i uh.. pay friendship :D?
