My apologies friends, I forgot that it is different if you put the square on the bottom,
The correct angle to cut is 43 degrees NOT 47. You have to subtract 47 degrees from 90 degrees to get correct angle if you use the speed square this way.
You can do this from the top of the rafter, but if you measure from the bottom, you need to subtract your finding from 90
In this video, Mr. Kongable discusses how to use a speed square to find the angle of a rafter with it is unknown.

Thanks Mr. Kongable!! I honestly never knew how to use the pivot point. The only part that's confusing is how you knew it's a 13:12 pitch.

The easiest way to find the pitch/angle of an existing rafter it to do the following: put a level on the rafter , position the level to plumb, draw a line. Put your pivot point on the bottom of the vertical pencil line and read the angle on your speed square where the underside of the rafter intersects the degree numbers. - super simple and always accurate.
@mr.kongable
@mr.kongable 8 месяцев назад
You are correct. I just wanted to show how you would find the pitch if you didn't have a level handy. My RU-vid channel is for people who are new to carpentry, woodworking, and welding. Many of my students don't have their own level, but they can get a speed square pretty easily. Thanks for your input, I appreciate it.

Thank you so much! I'm trying to build a basic slanted frame to put a shade clothe or eventually some of that plastic roofing on. So i greatly appreciate it! Lol now i just have to figure out how to figure out the cut angle before i cut them! My tall side is 12 and my short is 8 feet... I don't think it should be to awful to figure out lol 😅 yeah I suck at math!

You can also put to the pivot point up top rest a level on it and level over would be a little more accurate. Not knowing if the plum cut on the rafter is actually plum or not

Speed squares come with a manual giving simple instructions on their use , this is way to difficult . Place the speed square pivot at the bottom of rafter as you did , then using a small torpedo level , level the base , read the scale and that's it ! Will tell you the pitch , angle to cut ! The end cut of the rafter is s plumb cut , you'll need to know more to do your birds mouth cut , hip or valley !

Not a 13. /12 pitch more like 8/12. You can walk a roof up to about 9 or 10 /12 pitch. Hope that helps.

its more like a 11/12, I made the mistake of doing the extra step in the video, but I listed what should be done in the description.

Your first pivot you say its 47 then you make a line. Then you pivot it more and say the second line is your 47 degree again????

100 % wrong! That only works for a 12/12 . If that rafter was a 8/12 then the cut angle would be 35.5 deg. To use the square properly the back of the square would be held level in relation to the angle then you would read the angle as indicated on the common scale
