I find the bridge size measurements AS PROVIDED ON THE GLASSES tend to be off from actual bridge size. It's supposed to be the distance between the lenses at the closest point, from inner frame edge to inner frame edge. I find that it can vary, sometimes matching for the actual gap at outer edges of the frame at closest point. But I find that it also tends to match for the gap width at the center of the nose pads. Another problem is that your optimal bridge size does not guarantee a proper fit. What is not considered here is eyeglasses design. Some have lenses that are tall and the bridge size may be smaller than you normally take but end up centering the lenses properly on your eyes. There's also the matter of how bendable nose pads are positioned. Some are affixed in the usual place but on some glasses they can sit lower... and this will have an effect on fitment.

thanks so much for your replies. Quite surprising that the measurements are off! OMG....

This bridge size issue is so confusing I'm starting to consider cancelling an online order. I don't even understand what they're saying to measure in the video. What exactly is above or below the pupil? Is it where the curve of the nose tends to straighten out? Is it the low point where the nose is still basically parallel to the forehead?
@cytherians
@cytherians Год назад
@@susankridler1455 It can definitely be confusing. Basically the best thing to do is go into a shop that has decent quality eyeglasses and try on several pairs. Check for fitment. Then note the bridge width. That should give you an average for what will work for you. Last but not least, choose a vendor that has a good return policy. This way if it doesn't work out, you're usually just on the hook for return shipping.

It doesn't actually tell you how to measure it

You can't. The number on the frame is actually the distance between lenses, not the width of the space between the frames. So if you pick a thicker frame you need to add to that width.

What is the video saying to measure? What exactly is above or below the pupil? Is it where the curve of the nose tends to straighten out? Is it the low point where the nose is still basically on the same plane as the forehead? It seems a lot of that would depend on your features and also on how thick the lasses frame is in the area of the nose.

Hi Susan Kridler, thank you for watching. :) Exactly, above or below the pupil refers to the curve where the nose tends to straighten out. It indeed depends on each person's features, that's why it is an important feature to consider. For more information on this matter, you can check out our blog post: rx-safety.com/2019/06/how-to-measure-the-nose-bridge-for-glasses/. Please let us know if you have any additional questions.

Wow this really helps. I never knew that my bridge is exactly level with my pupils. Thanks!

Keep in mind that the nose width at pupil level would be your proper bridge but not all sunglasses center vertically along that axis. Design differences can result in shapes that will put the pupil line high up on the lenses, resulting in a lot of cheek coverage (and that may or may not be desired).

Yeah, pretty useless video. Bridge size written on the frame is (1) not standard and (2) often depends on frame thickness. Bridge size different by 3mm can fit the same depending on the frame.

Yes. And it is also the shape of the frame below the bridge. A square frame will give you more nose contact with the frame. An aviator style will give less contact with the nose. Unless you have a crooked nose from a break like me. Then plastic frames look stupid on me. Frames with adjustable nose pads work best in most cases. These popular fat plastic frames often don't fit a persons face, like in about 75% of the people who wear plastic frames.

So I visited several retailers and tried on a bunch of glases. Turns out NONE of them fit right because the bridge of my nose is too wide (AND thanks to you I can see my bridge is higher than my pupil). I have cheaters and they don't all off when I shake my head BUT they sit on top of my nose instead of fit over it. Several places told me I have a wide bridge and need to get it measured. I never purchased glasses before and I know online you need all kinds of measurments (ie, pupil to pupil, bridge, ear to eye, etc.). I am seeing my eye doctor on Monday the 24th and know I need transition glasses so I will get a Rx from him. Can you tell me exactly what I should ask him to measure so I can order online? Thanks so much!

There seems to be variables in how this measurement is provided. I have 6 pairs of sunglasses and measured all of them compared to the noted size on the stems, using the guide here. Only 2 matched. The others were off by 2mm or more. Essentially, bridge fitment depends upon the frame design as it matches to your particular face. Optimally, you want your lenses to be centered on your eyes from side to side and top to bottom. The right bridge width will have the lenses naturally sitting at that centered position. With bendable nose pads, you can play with it--widening or narrowing--to help achieve the perfect center. The nose pads should naturally hug your nose bridge, resting comfortably. You shouldn't have to push down on the frames to get that proper spot (which causes "pinching" of your nose bridge). And if too wide, the natural position of the frame on your nose will have the lenses sitting lower on your eyes that desired.

I have the same problem. They don't straddle my nose right, if at all. They sit on it, rather than straddle it, and look dorky. This also will affect the amount of reading area I get from a progressive lens. I'll only get a sliver to read through since they'll sit so high. I tried on lots of glasses recently and took pics. The ones I liked, of course, didn't straddled my nose. One thing I did notice was that the ones that DID fit had a much wider upside-down U-shaped bridge, and the frame itself HAD to curve outward at the bottoms as well, the part closest to my nose. Also, upside-down V-shaped seemed to fit better. I don't look in the mirror and see a huge nose or anything, and people tell me I have a small face, but gosh, I feel like my honker must be huge whenever I try on frames.

@@tailzzzzz I’ve had the exact same problem, and I’m on my third pair of glasses trying to get the perfect fit on my nose and it’s still uncomfortable. I don’t know what else to do
