In this video I walk through the process of finding a new pair of running shoes for beginners. This is one of the most asked questions I receive on social media and I hope that someone is able to get some value out of this video. Running is more enjoyable when you have the proper footwear and it helps to reduce injuries. #running #runningtips #runningshoes

Great meeting you Matt! Glad I could help. It’s been a while since this video, but I should mention there was a lot in this video I didn’t mention - I was a bit nervous tbh. So please excuse the repeated words, info, etc. I tried my best! I was told I would apart of the video when I walked in that day. Nonetheless, hope everyone finds some value in this! Feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions!

Hey finn! ive been having issues with numbing on my left foot when getting to mile 4-5. Using the clifton 8 Hokas and tried some lacing fixes but still going numb. what do you recommend?
@finnbremner2463
@finnbremner2463 Год назад
@@Dudeinpjs14 Hey Gustavo! Thanks for reaching out. A solution to the numbing in your left foot could be - 1. Shoe size (possibly too small) 2. Change of sock 3. If size is good, potentially trying a different style of Hoka. Perhaps the “Kawana” or “Rincon”. 4. Trying different brand all together. Similar to the Clifton 8 - • New balance 880/1080 • Saucony Ride 15 • Brooks Ghost 15/Glycerin 20 Hope this helps, my friend! I’m by far no expert, just some recommendations. Please reach out if you have any more questions. Wish you all the best!

Great content. I wish I had this type of help when I first started running. In any case, if you do not have access to such store with high tech devices, you can look at your shoes and see the pattern of over use. From there, you should be able to determine the type of shoes you need to buy. Another option is slightly wetting your feet and step on a piece of paper. You should see the distribution of weight in your feet.

I rotate shoes based on my needs during a training block, certain shoes are best only used for certain types of runs. What type of shoes do you have and what type of runs are you trying to do? For example: A shoe like the Saucony Endorphin speed can be used for multiple types of runs and a max cushion like Asics Novablast mostly best for long runs or easy days.

Drop is also really important. If I get pain in my left knee or right hip, it’s almost always due to a high drop. Alternatively, if you have inordinate pain or tension in your calves or tendons, a shoe with a higher drop may be called for.

This is awesome. Didn’t even realize some stores have those scanners, lol. Great timing since I just started training for my first marathon and still trying to find the perfect daily trainer for me. After a month of training in Hoka Clifton, I started experiencing shin splints. Gonna see a PT for the first time tomorrow since I’m getting a chain reaction and want to find out what I can do better. I have a feeling it’s just a matter of finding the right shoe. I’m looking into Brooks and Saucony as my next options. I only wish there was a part 2 that went into details about which brands may offer bigger toe box, better for flat fleet, etc. Will do more research but may just be live and learn :) Thanks for the helpful video!
@rodb6610
@rodb6610 Год назад
You can find great information about specific brands on the internet like in general altra and new balance have wide toe boxes while Nike and Adidas fit a more narrow foot. As fast as flat foot vs high arch goes it’s difficult to always account for that in a shoe. People with flat feet might have unwanted ankle flexibility and if they don’t have strong ankles it would not benefit them to use unstable shoes for daily training. Those with high arches might have tight calves and maybe a really stiff shoe wouldn’t be a good fit. There are great podcasts that discuss in detail. If you started developing shin splints, I would first see that you haven’t increased volume or intensity too fast. In my experience, they tend to happen when I pick up running after extended periods away. More than a month without running. Always good to see a PT at the beginning to a training block if you can afford it. For future reference on which shoes work for you I would look at fit, and drop, and comfort. Go to the running store and try out five pairs.
@boredsilly101
@boredsilly101 Год назад
@@rodb6610 Appreciate the insight! I got my shoe from a running store, but they didn’t have a scanner. This motivated me to find a store with a scanner. Turns out I pronate and would do better with a stability shoe. After seeing a PT, turns out the main reason is similar to your experience. I’ve increased intensity too fast. Even though I was following a novice level training program and keeping weekly mileage increases within 10%, it was still too much for my body and my muscles were over stressed. I was personally offered the following suggestions. - Run 3x a week vs 4x - Mobility and band exercises - Cross train and walk more - Refrain from increasing mileage until pain subsides - Alternate between shoes if possible Even though I was following a training program “by the book” I’m learning to listen to my body, adjust accordingly, and be patient. Agree it’s definitely not a one size fits all. Best to go to a store to find what works for each person.
@rodb6610
@rodb6610 Год назад
@@boredsilly101 Awesome to hear that you found the help you needed! PTs can work miracles by giving us such little tips and suggestions. One thing I will say about stability shoes: the help they provide is often excessive and overrated IMO. Personally, I don’t run in stability shoes. I think they disrupt my natural movement. However, I do wear stability shoes (Brooks Transcend 7 which you can find at great discount) for work after long and difficult training sessions. The exercises that your PT prescribes along with strength training are the best supplement to any running regiment. Good luck with your training block and on your marathon. Just did my first and the best advice I can give is don’t overvalue any single workout. Just keep showing up!
@boredsilly101

@@rodb6610 Congrats on finishing your first marathon! I’ll see how the new shoes work out over time. Though I understand what you mean with stability shoes. Thankfully most stores have a generous exchange policy to test it out. Thank you for sharing your experience and all the tips!

@finnbremner2463 Год назад
Hey Vlad - sorry I’m just now seeing this comment! I try to answer to everyone I can. I’m no expert by any means, but here are my thoughts - In my opinion - the wave horizon is not a super “aggressive” stability shoe so you should be just fine. However, if you have a more neutral gait I would recommend looking into the Mizuno Wave Sky 6. It’s very similar in profile to the wave horizon! Hope you’re well, all the best Vlad.

@finnbremner2463
@finnbremner2463 Год назад
Hey! I would say the cause of the numbing would most likely be: 1. Shoe size (typically too small) 2. The Width of the shoe. May need a wide width (men is a 2E/women is D). 3. Sock change - the brands Balega and Features are good running socks 4. If not size or width, it could be your Instep (the top of your foot). Sometimes people with a High Instep will have numbness or tingling on the top of their foot (the upper of the shoe needs to be more relaxed) Hope this helps a bit, best of luck! Wish you the best.

Thankfully, the minimal, ultra flexible, 'barefoot' feel gimmicks have disappeared now, going back to rigid soles. But not before I did 10 miles in a floppy pair of Nike clown shoes, which hyperextended my big toe joint with every step, and instantly gave me a chronic toe joint injury. If you're just starting running you should actually do resistance (weight) training first, to strengthen your legs to stop your knees wobbling about. Then, as you won't be running far in the beginning, go for some rigid, ultra light Adizeros, if they still make them (under 220g in a 9UK/10US, if possible). Once you go light you don't go back, which is why I don't like the overpriced carbon plate 'pro' shoes, as the plates and high sole stack (thickness) has made them quite heavy. I'd also recommend woodland running, as it's softer and more pleasant (apart from the odd nasty ankle roll), so you might need the outsole to have a gnarlier surface, too. Light, low stack height, rigid shoes give much more feel, agility, and speed, which is perfect for woodland trails (you might need thicker soles for road/pavement/track-running, for added comfort, especially if you're heavy, but the shoes will weigh more and you won't feel the ground).

Hello Brother, My self Pavan from India. I'm inspiring from your videos and started doing regular running. But, I don't have shoes. If you brought me a pair of running shoes I will be more thankful.

This video honestly doesn't help whatsoever because there isn't anywhere close to me with this kind of technology, or sales reps with this kind of knowledge. I essentially need to know how I can find out what shoe works for me on my own, without all of the fancy pants 3d scanning shit.

Hey Ian! I understand where you are coming from, not everyone has access to this tech, etc. To give my “two cents” here’s a potential guide to help find the right brand/shoe : Brands that run wider (typically) 1. Hoka 2. New Balance 3. Saucony Brands that run more narrow (typically)* 1. ASICS 2. Mizuno 3. Puma 4. Nike *Most of these brands will be available in wide if needed. 1. Sizing: You always want about a half thumb to full thumb in the front of the shoe from the big toe (help accommodate swelling and foot being pushed forward, save toenails) In addition, the width is important to consider. For men, standard width in running shoes is letter D. If too tight in width, try going to a wide width, 2E. 2. Cushion level If having issues with knees, looking for comfort miles, easy daily trainer best for body impact, longer distances go higher cushion. If looking for speed shoe, tempo day, shorter distance, go lower cushion. 3. Overall fit: Making sure the heel is secure, the toe box has enough room (or not too much), the top of the foot is comfortable and not constricted, and the length of the shoe has space to accommodate - are the main things to be looking for. High cushion running shoes (run wider in toe box): 1. Hoka Bondi 8 2. New Balance 1080 3. Saucony Triumph 20 4. Brooks Glycerin 20 Sorry for all this info, just hope this is somewhat helpful to at least do some research on. With fleet feet (the store in the video) - we have a 60 day return policy with any online order (since you don’t have one close to you). So you can try out a shoe and any issues you can send back if necessary. A bit frustrating I know, but just to give you some peace of mind if you wanted to go that route. Have a good one, sorry for this book response. Hope is of some help to you, Ian. Best of luck.

The strap on your hat dangling in your face is super annoying. I had to stop watching your otherwise informative video
