Dear Cas, you have got to be the most authentic, no holds barred person on RU-vid. You are so charismatic, intelligent and inspiring. You are helping so many people. Thank you for encouraging people to volunteer. You are absolutely right: it lights us up. And medically speaking, it prolongs life (the telomeres become longer). So every time we do something for someone, we are also doing it for ourselves and the world becomes better for it. I hope you make other podcasts as raw as this because you truly touch people’s souls. Thanks again. From a fellow Canadian.

Thank you Cass, my husband are downsizing and in our next home I will not have a “craft room”….a few months ago my 9 & 10 year old grandsons started creating what they called “happys”…..from all my craft items..maybe a drip art on canvas, painting a flower pot, adding artificial florals to a wreath, just whatever they created! I reached out to a local nursing home and we hand delivered each item to residence that were in need of a smile! There were many smiles and even a few tears shed! It has opened up a whole new world and both boys have committed to going every month! I have new, unused lotions, potions, warm socks, so this month we are delivering those items! It’s true…when you are giving to others …your troubles seem to float away!! God Bless from Texas!

I had not heard any of this part of your story, but I do appreciate you sharing it with us. I can tell you have been struggling since your father-in-law's death. You mentioned him several times, but that just means you loved him deeply and his loss is a great loss to you and your family. I will pray for God's comfort for all of you during this time. You gave so many practical, important opportunities for us to consider. Thank you for those. I know many RU-vidrs keep their faith to themselves, so it's hard to know who leans on God, and who doesn't have that at this time in their lives. I pray that if you do know the Lord, that you will lean on him during this time, and if you don't have a relationship with him, I'll also pray that he reveals himself to you in a very sweet way as he loves to do to walk with us through the difficult times as well as the good times.

One of the things I ask people when they are looking for their passion is: When you walk into a library/bookstore (or have random time to Google), what aisle/subject do you wander to? Usually it is the same subject over and over again. That is often the hidden passion they harbor, the _thing_ that needs to be born and nurtured to completion. GREAT podcast!

Oh Cass, I’m crying at 5.30am watching this! Best stories are about people who turn their lives around. 6yrs ago I knew I had to end my marriage and get my head together. Healing has been an incredible journey. Ex told me to get a hobby a year into marriage as he didn’t want to spend time with me and the baby. I quilted for 27 yrs, and teaching people and breaking down skills to make the easy to learn was awesome. People wanted my skills and I won state awards. I wrote 3 books on my own design technique and that’s changed how I learn everything and so much confidence. I wanted to be remembered for something. Been craving doing woodwork and renovations for decades and now I am and it’s healing me. Decluttering and organising for this bee is calming and exciting. Learned how to Photoshop ordinary photos and am making my own artwork. Love to everyone changing their lives or just starting the new chapter in their lives. ❤

I love this topic! Sorry for the long story here. My passion is really just for me. Since I was a teenager in the 70s, I’ve loved music, especially singer/songwriters and guitars. When I was about 15, my parents gave me a guitar, thinking it would help me fulfill my dreams, but it was a plywood model and the strings killed my fingers, not really very playable. At some point, the nut went missing from it when my brother’s girlfriend needed a nut for her guitar, so I had nothing to play. Eventually I got an old classical guitar at a flea market, for not much money, but it wasn’t helpful to play the songs I wanted to play. It was years later when we bought guitars for two of our kids when they got interested in music, that I thought to get one for me, but it was again, a budget decision, and not very playable (all laminated, high action, and painful to play). It wasn’t until I turned 50 that I treated myself to a nice guitar (Seagull Maritime mini jumbo, with a solid top rather than laminated or plywood). It made it possible to learn the songs I wanted to play, and my kids showed me how to read guitar tabs, so I could print songs from the internet. Several years later, RU-vid made it possible to watch artists play and imitate their techniques. And now that there are lessons available, many for free, I’ve been able to learn so many of the songs I love. I tend to only play by myself in my family room, but I’ve told my brother (not the one who allegedly took my guitar nut) who lives in western Canada (I’m on the east coast), we should do a FaceTime jam together some day. My kids have lives of their own now, and don’t have the time or interest to get together and play. So I take my guitar when we go camping, but I only play when it’s just hubby and me, and he is learning now too, so we should be able to play together soon. Even my best friend has zero interest in hearing me play, but that’s because she’s just not into guitars and music. I’m 64 now, and arthritis in my shoulder made me pass on the Seagull jumbo guitar and get a dreadnaught, and if I watch how I hold it so as not to put too much stress on my shoulder, I love playing it. An accident two years ago, where I broke my fretting hand, almost made me give up playing, but after a few months, I started again, and recovered most of the movement in the pinky and ring fingers that were most affected, by just slowly pushing myself til I recovered enough strength and flexibility to play again. I won’t let anything stop me now, and might even get brave enough to play in front of people some day.

I so appreciate your honesty and vulnerability. I too have ADHD and passion has always been a challenge due to boredom. I am blessed to have a career where I can help others and use my gifts. God built me to be a healer, and I am licensed as a PT and LMBT (massage). I have been able to maintain the same career for almost 30 years due to making minor changes and learning new skills. My ADHD brain is constantly looking for the next big thing, and my OCD brain shuts down at the thought of big change. I have managed to accommodate both by blending old skills with new. At 50 years old, I know I am well past the halfway mark of my "physical" career, so my next "passion project" is going back to school (again) to become proficient in ASL so that I can be a medical interpreter for the deaf community. You are absolutely correct about the need to have something that "lights you up," and I have been going through an extended period of varying levels of depression due to back to back life changes, and I have been in survival mode for quite some time. Today's podcast is one more confirmation that it's time to start taking classes to move forward with the ASL. I've "survived" long enough. It's time to THRIVE!!

I’m sitting here in bed sick and I can here my kiddo in the other room say “I just donated 80 stuffies!” as she declutters and has agency over her things and her space. It’s awesome. And we continue to learn and grow and put into practice this notion that we deserve spaces which allow for breath and solace and creativity to emerge.

Steven Spielberg describes it as a whisper---easy to miss. Love the clue of asking what you do if the internet goes out. ; - D Looking at books and previous activities can also be a clue. No one made me study art or buy so many books on art, psychology, and writing. ; - ) Keeping a list of what I'm proud of helps me remember I'm capable when I notice myself starting to slip into depression. Success is a Vitamin we need often.

We found when we asked people what was their favorite thing or way to play when they were 4 years old they got insight to what their adult purpose- passions were going to be in life Four year olds are old enough to play independently but haven't been imprinted with the "right" way to do things yet. My friend lined her stuffed animals up and played school. I played house. I didn't care so much about the pretend cooking and dolls. I wanted to arrange the furniture. My husband's friend was depressed about his desk job. He said he put on plays for his family when he was that age. He redirected his free time over the years and is now a write and producer

Cas, thank you for sharing your wonderful story! It is so inspiring! I mentioned to a colleague recency that I discovered you and the other ladies in January re the take your home back challenge. She was familiar with you and mentioned some of your earlier teen history. I hoped I would hear about it from you and here it was! I worked for 14 yrs in a correctional setting providing mental health services. I know what you mean about learning from others & especially in an adult correctional setting! I am glad the light came on for you and you decided that life was not for you! I know I helped some during that time but there are so many who are stuck. I had a great sense of accomplishment & joy to help people find themselves & hopefully change their lives forever. I am so pleased to see the work you have done on yourself and now you are helping others! You should be so proud of yourself! Thank you for your lovely story and the work you do now! You are helping me to declutter my life in so many ways!

Around the 20 -21 minutes mark… you started talking about your step father….i have left a comment on another podcast of yours… this hit me in the feels … my wife just passed from lung cancer in august. She also had a long hard battle and was very concerned about leaving a legacy. She was a massage therapist and at 50 years old really found her passion in teaching it. Sadly she was only able to do it for a couple of years before the pandemic hit turning the massage therapy world upside down. Then she got sick. I wish I could find that spark of passion she had and that you obviously have found. Sorry to ramble. I do love listening to your podcast - you are “real” people and I love your sense of humor 😊.

I ways always noticing people and their pains. I would rub my dads shoulders when he got home. Touch, hugs, rubbing each others arms as kids browning up meant a lot to me. It could hamper your whole day.. in my late 30 I went back to school to become a massage therapist Did it for over 20 years. Sometimes I felt like I show pay my clients because I got some much from my time with them. There are very few things in life that give almost instance gratification but this did. Some one could come in pain and leave pain free. It was such a high. I’m retired now and I still miss it. I need a new zest and zeal project. I love just paying for someone’s coffee and walk away and not say a word. I giggle all day. Giving never expecting anything back is the best high. One act can last for days. You did a great job of coming out of those hardships, Cass!!! Workaholism is very much the same to alcoholism etc. The tricky part for me has been to not fall into co-dependency with helping others. My mom grew up in a workaholic family and my dad in an alcoholic family and I went into co-dependency. I clean and organize houses for clients as my passion work. But I catch myself doing too much for others that doesn’t actually help them. There is a fine line. It depends on the motive. Is a person saying yes but actually mean no! Tricky. When I do it for the Lord, and not expect anything in return, and I mean yes-then I feel fulfilled!! Anyways. I like your passionate podcasts and than you Cass!!

I think this is the best content you've ever produced. Ive been struggling with feeling worthless and pointless lately. My first instinct when you said, "what are you proud of?" It was " nothing." But then i remembered working with a search and rescue k9 team for years. I was passionate about it exactly as you describe. When that horrible day, 9-11-01 happened, our team was able to provide dogs to search at NYC. But when i get down and depressed, i forget, "oh yeah, i loved that. Im proud of that." Key for me is remembering that i need to keep doing things i can be proud of. There are other things i could lidt. But... Depression kinda makes you forget how. Thank you Cas, for this podcast. And the reminder. Im crying, but for a good reason.

@thedirtprincess3293 Wow to your search and rescue work!!! 👏👏👏The fact that you could forget about something so extraordinary says so much about what a Cruel Deceiver depression is. Sorry about your stepfather, but what a fantastic tribute to him. I actually created a volunteer position for myself during the summer by "rescuing" books from the donation shed at our recycling center and bringing them to the wildly popular "Little Library" in our park, so that it will always be stocked with a variety of books. Doing this forces me to go to the park and take a walk while I'm there. People are so appreciative of the new titles and I love watching the children beg their parents to look for books for them. I feel like I'm part of the community and have even met some of the park "regulars" through my "hobby". And, of course, I have found some fabulous new books that I wouldn't have ever read if I hadn't picked them up through someone else's donations. I don't have the time to volunteer, the skill to repurpose an item or the organizational ability to start a group, but, in a small way, I feel I am making a difference.

Thank you for sharing. Especially about your youth. My daughter has runaway and I just have no clue what she is thinking…but you described your youth and that is my daughter. She even has told me some of the things you said. You work to work….boring. It may not be the whole reason for her but have given me hope that maybe she will find her way. She is ambitious and a care taker of her friends. I love watching your videos and pod casts.

I love that you are so unaware how much God has put you together and how you thoroughly are an example of the verse that says, "Greater love hath no man than this that a man lay down his life for his friends." You speak so much into the lives of others that is placed in your heart by the One who created your heart. God truly uses you and will continue to as you serve others. I pray that you know soon that God has created that joy you so frequently talk about. You are a blessing to my heart! Love you, Cas!

I love & appreciate your honesty in telling your story. Many of us have a past we aren't especially proud of but that past led us to who & what we are today. For me, the change happened when i decided to fully follow Jesus Christ. There's no turning back for me!

I really loved this video. I can so relate. It does take time to realize you have a spring in your spirit to know that you love something you just did, but we can all do it. I hope you are enjoying your new home. My jaw fell open at the floods in your yard. Laughing is important it fills our heart in the hard stuff. Thanks for being real.

This spoke to me so much. Thanks for sharing your story Cass. As usually you made me cry a couple times. There is an organization here that is just like the one you mentioned where people can come into the warehouse and shop for free for things they need. It is called the wish project and I have thought about volunteering there. Also, I've looked into a photography class recently. So ironic that you mentioned both. Feels like a sign.

Cas -- Thank you for sharing so honestly about your life. This topic is really hitting home for both me and my husband. I want to relisten to it with my husband, cuz we're both struggling with finding our purpose (we're both senior citizens) and want to have our lives make a difference that we were alive.

Cas you are so open with us. I am crying with you. I discovered my purpose late and realized I have been following my passion through my whole career. (37 years in medical field.) Now I am retired and having so much fun. I do volunteer for my church. Mostly I am having a blast doing all the crafts, sewing, and learning new things like canning and soap making.. Just finding some joy has been wonderful. Many blessings to you and your family.

My sincere and heartfelt sympathies, for the loss of your step father. *hugs* (if that's ok). This is a great episode. My whole life I've wanted to figure out how to "make a positive difference in the world".... and my only real passions are creating art... and spending time with animals.... but art is even stronger.... I've often felt that, the only "good thing" I've ever done was to marry my husband. I've really never done anything great.... I've always felt worthless.... I'm 50 years old, and I have mostly just wasted my life. And I've always wondered what my purpose is. I have health issues that make it really hard to make plans.... and commit to anything. And I've struggled with depression, and anxiety too. (I'm pretty good these days, but still have days and moments.... that are a struggle). There was ONE thing I am proud of.... when I was young... I don't know maybe grade 3 or 4, I won a bronze medal, in an art competition that was around the world.... I still have the medal and the book that show cases the drawing I did that won... All that being said, I know for a fact that what you're saying is true.... because when I help my neighbour/friend, by cat sitting when she goes away for a few days.... or when I've shovelled neighbour's driveways for them, on heavy snowfall days.... and stuff like that.... I DID feel great about helping someone out.

Enjoy exploring your passions and fulfilling your life from now on. ❤ I’m starting over in my 50s and feel I’ve wasted life so far (due to awful marriage and health). Creating art is one of the only things to keep me sane over the decades and I’m switching to woodwork and renos. It’s so empowering. I think it’s ok to concentrate on yourself and fulfil your heart first and then go out in the world with that ignited passion to make a difference too. 😊

It sounds like you have made a difference. Maybe you’re discounting the things you’ve done because they seem small to you. I know how it feels to be on the receiving end of small kindnesses. They add up to a ton of good feelings for the recipients.

Has Izzy thought of Speech Pathology? I love kids too and always knew I would work in child development. I’ve been a Speechie in Australia for 16 years and still have my passion. There is nothing else in this world quite like seeing the tears of the parents of a late talker say “Mama” for the first time. 😍 The degree was hard work, but I loved it and never tried to cheat on exams (unlike Highschool - I too have ADHD). Just a little thought to pop in her head. Take it or leave it, but I do love it. ❤️

Cas thank you for sharing this. I could relate so much as had a troubled teenage life and years later was in abusive relationships. I stopped working because of my health a few years ago, was a carer all my working life. I was stuck in a dark place with no purpose and then decided to start volunteering at my local charity shop. I absolutely love it and find it so rewarding, knowing how much I'm helping. So thank you ❤❤
