you have really good advice and examples, however; I've been watching you long enough to know that you don't really take your own advice. you seem to jump from one fantasy self to the next. I also know that people who can do this must have alot of extra money to purchase all these things and then just get rid of them. I agree with you that the money has already been spent, and getting rid of said things isn't going to bring that money back. I know someone whom I've been trying to help declutter and it only makes room for more stuff!!!! uggg. Let's all take a step back and think about it, when I was young I had absolutely no clutter issues, do you know why? because I couldn't afford to buy extra stuff!!!! this is above all else a money/spending issue. People are using shopping/buying as a form of self-medication, just like smoking, drinking, gambling, overeating, etc. you can cut the weed off when you mow, but until you pull it out by the ROOT, it will still keep coming back. We all need to find out why and what we are self-medicating for through our purchasing and why we can't release these things to keep a clean and tidy home and life.

Ok Cass, I knew you were speaking to me to get up so I did (after enjoying the winter sun shower). I picked up my tools and went out to demolish some rotting fencing and chopped it up for the bin, enough for a few weeks worth of pickups. Been doing a few tidy/clean things this morning inside so I tackled an old job. Was only going to do about 2 long pieces of wood but ended up getting rid of about 10. Yay. 😊

Cas I'm now seeing this. Peter was the first person who had me thinking of decluttering but I never followed through. I've watched so many different organizers over the years, but your style is so encouraging. I've been decluttering every weekend for the past 3 months and every time I feel like I'm getting nowhere, I put on one of your RU-vid videos. I think it's going to be another 3 months but with you cheering me on virtually helps a whole lot. Thanks Cas! And Peter is an awesome guest

That is what I am doing something every day something or something’s go away, trash or donate. I do have identity clutter. I have things that were grandparents and other family members I know the meaning and the history. I am the only one who knows the ownership of these items and memories

My house was full of identity clutter, and then it caught fire. Everything is gone. I don't have to make those hard choices they were made for me. Watching this helps me though, because I can see how I might fall into familiar clutter traps again.

WHERE DO I START???? I love listening to you cas, your so good at making me realise that I have to much craft stuff , but it's so hard to get rid of things as I know it will cost me later , ....but....I know how much this is going to save my life once I can overcome my anxiety attacks. So I know you said do it now while I'm listening to you, and that would be cool unfortunately it's late at night here in th U.K and I'm more motivated in the morning, and now that I'm moving home it feels like it might be easier, it takes me a long time as I'm disabled and in my late 60s. But I'm gonna try x thanks cas x

Cass I’m very similar to you in the sense that I shop for my fantasy self more then my reality life, one thing I’ve found to do is to think of others when I see something that makes something desired easier. Example: My in-laws were wanting to set up a play room for their grandchildren one thing they needed were size appropriate containers to store toys in, now when I’m on my phone or out in town if I find a toy organizer for a good deal I let them know. If I find something I can actually use I already have to have the space cleaned out and ready for it to be used, otherwise I don’t let myself get it. My oldest child loves to play with their toys, but can have a hard time cleaning up before moving on to a new toy set, I wanted to start doing the container method for most of the toys but I didn’t want the idea to flop on it’s face, instead I started with cardboard boxes and put most of the toys away, when my child wants a new toy (going from blocks to a character themed or dress up toy blocks) they have to put current toys away completely and correctly before the new toy can come out. That went very well for 1 month and then I felt ready to let myself make a “big investment” into something my fantasy self wanted, now it’s no longer my fantasy self but my reality self. If it hadn’t worked with the cardboard boxes I wouldn’t have made the investment in the quality storage containers but my child is now putting away toys by themselves before requesting a new toy be gotten out.

Thanks Cass, I needed this push today. Have been decluttering for a couple of weeks. Yesterday I went through sentimental cards and letters and filled a black bin bag - actually leaving space in my underbed storage box! But my identity clutter is something I haven't really pondered. I'm a creative so have all the bits and bobs and although I went through my crafting supplies 3 times already, I now realise there are a handful of additional items that I really don't need. There's more I could donate, definitely, so I'll be jumping on that tomorrow. (I was going through my finances while listening to you today! :-) Wishing you a wonderful rest of your weekend.

I totally agree with you that people have too much stuff. Our current society has a "stuff addiction" and people very seriously need to look at how much stuff they are bringing into their home each week. We all buy too much stuff that ends up becoming clutter. Our stuff is costing us our peace and it's also costing many people their retirement and they maybe don't even realize it because they figure they aren't ready to retire yet so they can buy all the little things they think they need or want. But all those little things add up to be a lot of money spent that could have been saved for retirement (it takes a very long time for most people to save enough money to comfortably retire nowadays!). I think that if we can fill a large black trash bag every month (after we have done a big full house declutter and we are just doing monthly maintenance), we are probably spending too much money and buying too much stuff that we really don't need. Absolutely decluttering should be done monthly, but a big black trash bag makes me think that people need to really reconsider what they are bringing into their homes. I can usually fill a small grocery bag with trash that's accumulated each month, but not a large trash bag.

Aloha! 🌴 I appreciate this as I have decluttered over and over, and I am still finding it hard to keep up, so this is a good reminder that I need another huge declutter! My mom keeps reminding me I need to get rid of so much stuff. I have a babysitter, and she declutters for me (BONUS!) and she got 4 huge trash bags of stuff out. I didn't even look to see what she threw out because I'M pretty sure I won't miss ANY OF IT! 😅 Thank You Cas, we need you!! ❤️

Wow! Thank you so much for this video Cas! 🩷 I’m a teacher on summer break and it is really hard for me to just relax and not feel like I need to tackle all of the home projects now. I have been enjoying slower mornings. I definitely can relate to the mindset of earning time to relax after I’ve accomplished something. Thank you for the reminder that we can prioritize rest and relaxation and not just view it as a reward for productivity!

I’m so sorry Laura. I’ve been working on decluttering my home and I know how overwhelming it can be. I find if I just start with the smallest of tasks, like going through one drawer, it gives me a sense of accomplishment and it makes me want to do more. It’s ok if you don’t do more because doing just the one task is great progress! I wish I could be there to help you. Cas is my favorite decluttering/ organizer. You have been all over my house during this podcast. I dumped the junk in the refrigerator and put away clean dishes. I filled my pill boxes for the week and cleaned out my purse. I also rounded up the dirty dishes and started a shopping list. And I have the ingredients out for making French Waffles - more on that later. Whenever I have a task I don't want to do, I find one of your videos to watch while I'm doing it, so it makes it easier to do the disgusting thing. Give your craft supplies to senior centers or nursing homes. They will love it. I have some phone wire from my husband's jobs that I'm giving to girls who make bracelets and maybe other jewelry. Free supplies for them! I also keep my clean egg cartons for my young friends who raise chickens and sell the eggs. Free packaging for them! Finally, I give away my firewood to the neighbors because the woodstove is their only heat source and they can sure use it. I can't burn the wood due to COPD according to my doctor. If you think hard enough your trash can be someone's treasure.

I ate up the last couple of my Japanese candies - yay for natural decluttering - while going through this past year of payslips & bank statements, filing them properly, and then shredding the oldest year of them. It's usually something i like to do in April - with the tax year changeover - but I'd been procrastinating it 🤭 (We're renters, so landlords like to see a couple of years of financial proof you can pay rent, UK). TLDR: An inch stack of paperwork is leaving 🥳 ... Also managed to get a few expired makeup & skincare products off my dresser so that's a bonus; both visually now AND avoiding the breakouts they can cause in future 😊 ... And now I'm gonna find another "declutter with me" video to make more progress on other items/rooms 🤭
