My father worked as a stoker, and later a driver, on the steam locomotives in northern Patagonia until they shut down the line back in '61. Saddest day of his life, he used to say. This brings back a lot of fond memories of hours spent listening to his stories. Whenever he talked about his railway days, he would light up. Thanks from me and my dear old man, wherever he may be...

Watching this video brings back memories from my time operating a live steam engine at Hersheypark in PA. The engines were built by Crown Metal Products and ran on a 2ft gauge track. They burned propane for fuel and man did it take time for them to warm up. Every morning was spent oiling, greasing, and polishing the brass before the park opened. Definitely a labor of love.

Although diesel engines are more efficient, the older steam engines were a work of art

Actually steam engines have more power at stall than a diesel because electric motors take all the power till they are moving decently fast

In the first 3 seconds when I saw the dirt on this mans face I knew I was in the right place. I thought I knew a lot about steam locomotives but the detail tricks he showed are superb. This is real work. Ain’t no couch potato video gaming slugs noticeable in this video. This is the real deal. This is living. Grateful that I am able to enjoy as it plays out in front of my own eyes. This confirms again nothing like live steam.

The fireman’s rule: shovel little and often. Down the sides, along the back, across the front and down the middle makeing sure to keep the fire bed thin but cover the air holes and control your fire to keep coal consumption at a minimum and don’t shovel coal again until two minutes have passed

It seems like the ash pan doesn't fit closely below the firebox, so I'm guessing there were lots of fires along the railroad? I used to be a brakeman on the SP (back when there were brakemen) and even then there were fires from the sparks of brakes on downhill stretches...

I was working on the railways over here in Britain in the last days of steam . Drivers used to say how sensitive steam was compared to diesel . I have heard it said driving a diesel engine was like driving a truck . The other thing was something to do with poor coal, not the proper machine coal used . And having to stop to get steam up due to dirty tubes . Usually at the most awkward place on the main line when an express was due !

Sir I have been a steam fan all my life and I have a question.We have all heard about 4 cycles and 2 cycle engines. How many cycles is a steam engine? Seeing as how steam is used on both ends of the cylinder does this make it a 1 cycle? Also, are the drive wheels connected from one side of the locomotive to the other? Finally how many cylinders does a steam locomotive have that produce power to drive the pistons then the wheels? Are the cylinders in time with each other? Thanks, Ken in Missouri
@bryanthunderfootporter4436
@bryanthunderfootporter4436 7 лет назад
kenskip1 By 'cycles' you really mean 'strokes'. All engines are 1 cycle; some are 2 stroke (admission/compression & power/exhaust) and some are 4 stroke (admission, compression, power & exhaust). Steam engines are 2 stroke (admission/power {steam pressure} & exhaust). 2). All wheel-axle assemblies are press fit together using a (usually) 600 ton wheel press. Thus, wheels are permanently tied together and cannot rotate independantly of each other. The cylindars/pistons are like the ones in your car. The main rods are the connecting rods. And the main driver is the crankshaft. 3). Most steam locomotives have 2 cylindars. Some, like Shays and Union Pacific's FEFs, used 3. Articulateds, like the UP Big Boy, used 4. {The Virginian had 2 & the Erie had 1 that used 6 - the 'tri-plexes'.} 4). Sides are timed 90 degrees out-of-time to each other. In the beginning, cylindars were timed 180* to each other. However, it was discovered that if the locomotive was stopped with one side dead forward and the opposite side thus stopped dead rearward, the lovomotive couldn't be started because the main rods didn't know whether to move down (forward) or up (rearward) as the pressure/motion was dead straight. This was solved by timing the drivers a quarter turn off from each other. Thus, all 2 cylindar engines (engines!) are timed 90* apart. Shays - with 3 cylindars - are timed 120* apart. Hope that clears some of it up for you. ~B.
@kenskip1
@kenskip1 7 лет назад
Almost,Seeing as how the steam is sent into the cylinder on both ends of the cylinder, this would make it a 1 stroke? Also, are the drivers or wheels from say the right side in a direct connection with the left side? Sort of like posi traction setup?I now understand about the timing. So basically the crankshaft is the rear wheels?Again, are both sides or wheels, drivers permanently connected together?Thank you for your time and effort, Ken
@bryanthunderfootporter4436
@bryanthunderfootporter4436 7 лет назад
kenskip1 A steam engine (cyls/pstns/rods/drivers) is a 1 cycle - 2 stroke design. What is confusing is that since steam is applied to both sides of the piston, each cylinder has two cycles per driver revolution; and each of those cycles is overlapped exactly halfway. This is because as steam is applied to the front face of the piston, it is also exhausting from the back face of the piston at the same time. Then the reverse is true. Think of 2 rows of bricks where the top row is exactly halfway overlapping the bottom row. Each side of the piston gets 2 strokes -steam in then steam out - for 1 completed cycle. 2 cycles for one completed driver revolution. 2). The wheels on all railroad equipment that run on tracks are solid units - the left side cannot turn independant of the right. This is why at low speed when a train is going around a curve you'll (sometimes) hear 'track groan': because outside needs to travel farther than the inside. But because the wheels and axle are fuse together into a solid unit, the outside wheel makes up the distance by skidding - and that's the low pitched groan you'll hear. It's like a crunching noise.
@kenskip1
@kenskip1 7 лет назад
Bryan, OK you have answered my questions and I thank you. Sort of like my Polaris atv, the outer wheel seems like it tears up the dirt more than the inner wheel.So on the left side as steam is entering the front of the piston, just the opposite is happening on the other side, stem is now entering the rear of the piston. Thanks Ken

I see many of you complaining about steam loco's vs diesels. Why bother? Both had their place in history. Steam basically built the United States into what it is today. But diesel is obviously what rules today for many reasons.
