Just seen this, another great educational video. Back in 1964 I fitted one to my mini, I got it from work, it was an early works type unit with the thick wires. In my case I had to grind back the metal screen surround because the new screen was slightly larger. Personally I always used the string method without any problems and a tool with a roller to insert the sealing strip, also used a rubber mallet to finally seat the screen. By the way I think that I may have been the only "private" owner to have one back then. Sorry to be critical but that auxiliary switch panel is in a very dangerous position, in an accident it would cause severe cuts to the legs, it should have been fixed to the top rail or even fit the switches into the rear parcel shelf trim.

wow that really cool Tony, I would say seeing one on a road going car back then would have been very rare. never be sorry for critical feedback it is the most helpful. Unfortunately I had no input on where that panel was placed. Customer was very clear on where he wanted it. To Quote Lord Tennyson "ours its not to reason why". In my racers I put it on an aux switch panel mounted on the cross member near the handbrake

Great information video. I always thought a heated windscreen would be a good idea in a classic mini, given the demister is very 1059...lol

It is one of the single best investments any classic mini owner who uses their car regularly in the winter time could put money into. as you say it is very very 1950's

Best viddy I've seen on fitting the windscreen. Came here to see if you were addressing a rear heated screen with a bad heater. Unsure if this is fixable. My car has aftermarket tint film over the heater grid. Not sure how the electrical connections attach to the glass.
@HREIRL
@HREIRL 3 года назад
Hi Tornado, thanks for the lovely comments 👍in some cases you can clean off the conections where the wires are afixed to the screen and use low melting point flux solder to solder on a piece of 28-0.30 wire. The factory in most screens bond on the original conections in the early days they where soldered. Hope that helps

@@HREIRL I've seen/heard about a Permatex conductive adhesive that can be used to repair the connection points on window heater elements....even has a procedure for repairing the thing grid lines if needed. Just have not looked closely at how the connections are made on the mini. I'll need to test to find out where the issue lies....at connectors or on a grid line.

Can you tell me is it possible to to wire the positive to to rear heat switch, so you get both front and back screen heating at the same time?
@HREIRL
@HREIRL 3 года назад
Hi Billy you most definitely could you would just need to add a Relay to the circuit because the front can draw 17 Amps and and the rear can draw 20 A which would overload the switch.

Thanks again for this tutorial. I didn't put in a heated windshield but I did replace the chrome strip and a new seal. It took me multiple viewings to pick up all the nuances of what you did and several attempts but it's back in and I'm pretty sure I could do it again and faster/easier. Any thoughts of showing the rear replacement?

@@HREIRL I've allways been told you shouldn't reuse the older windscreen rubber seal, and then i just saw you and confusion installed in my mind.

Hi José, this car was only built about 3month previous to the installation of this heated windscreen so it was fine to re-use however if the rubber has been on for a long period then it’s deffently a good idea to replace it

Would you mind giving the brand of the wire stripper and the terminal crimper? I'm also not a fan of the blue, red, yellow type connectors.

I enjoyed this for the windscreen removal/replacement - a job I dislike as it always seems to require a lot of effort and takes ages. Like you I use Fairy Liquid and cycle tyre levers and it is best to keep screwdrivers away. Recently I have been struggling with the fillet strip which goes in OK but a couple of days later starts to go crinkly at the corners. I have purchased product from both Mini Spares and Mini Mine with the same result. I spoke to MS and the guy seemed to be aware of the problem suggesting I try a black fillet instead. That is a bit non-standard so I am seeking a better solution. Do you have any experience of this problem?
@HREIRL
@HREIRL 3 года назад
Hi Graham, unfortunately I have experienced just exactly what you have said. there is currently no easy answer. I still have some older ones in stock which Im using up at the moment you do see some older ones pop up from time to time on the Bay so maybe worth keeping an eye out there 👍👍

@@HREIRL Thanks for responding - glad it's not just me. I will do as you suggest and look out for some old stock. I'm not doing any screen fitting until the weather warms up as it is still only 8C in my garage this morning...

This car has its heter installed but because of the cold winter here it can take a long time to de-frost the screen so this just helps a little

Do you get leaking through the seal where the wires push it back a bit? I’ve installed a heated screen in my mini and it leaks through the seal where the wires are

Haven’t had that problem our selves but a little Acrylic based sealant around the wire should solve that problem

Do you think using a classic mini as a daily through the winter is feasible? I garaged mine, as I thought it would rust to bits with the salt on the roads (in Scotland).

I think you might be making a wise move there. Minis dont like lots of rain and they deffo dont do well with salt

Hi Ian, it would all depend on the kind of switch you youse and the current limit. Using a high amp relay would be the safest
