plumberparts how can I soundproof the pump ? Our pump was installed in the adjacent bedroom (no room in bathroom) and is currently not boxed in so is very noisy. Is it safe just to build a frame around it ? Would I add sound proofing to the inside ? Is their a danger it could get too hot ? Thanks

Lots of information and an amusing delivery. Having watched your video I went ahead and had a new Stuart Turner pump fitted at the base of the cylinder,. This was replacing an old noisy one that has lived under the bath for over ten years. The plumber fitted the new pump almost exactly the way you have, lovely installation. Regrettably the pump started to weep on the cold side after just over a month of being installed. I contacted Stuart Turner and they wanted pictures of the installation. They have refused warranty stating that the angle, on the pipe at the top of the tank for the hot water supply is insufficient. So even though it is the COLD water side that is weeping, warranty is refused because they say the HOT side is not fitted correctly. I urge anyone fitting a pump to follow the fitting instructions explicitly, no matter how expensive that may be, as any failure will have your warranty claim rejected.

Fantastic video and instructions for those DIY heads who need to know that the Domestic Water Shower pump is COLD FEEDER TANK "in" with corresponding cold pumped action "out" to shower/upstairs /// and Emersion HOT "in" with Emersion HOT "out". After 3 years of thinking about it, I think I can now replace my knackered pump myself (after I examine it) and avoid being stung for a £600 / £800 plumbers bill ! You are a sublime teacher ... superb video ! Kev (Ireland)

As part of legionella control what we do at my firm (commercial mainly) is bring the expansion pipe up over the tank and then back down, into a visible tundish, then a fanny trap and tee into the waste or discharge out as you would a D2 on the unvented system. This is to prevent the warm water mixing with the cold bringing the temp of the cwst into the 20C or above which is a breeding ground for bscteria. Just a thought, may become mandatory at some point. Cheers for a great video bud. Atb

A really handy video I stumbled across. Our builders when fitting a downstairs shower room took the hot and cold feed from under the sink. It runs under the kitchen and extension floor and then up to the shower mixer. It takes forever to get hot and often have to run cold for ages first then switch over to hot slowly. We have a pump for the upstairs shower but that doesn’t kick in with the downstairs. Can I put a pump between the downstairs shower and where they have taken the feed from under the sink?

very helpful informative video, thank you. i had been struggling to work out why the showers in the old house i have just moved into had such rubbish pressure, i thought the problem was the undersized service pipe into the house but now i realise it is a gravity fed open vented system exactly like the one you demonstrate, i realise this is the main issue. my question is this; do i need one of these pumps for each of the 3 showers in the house or can i plumb the pump next to the tank to power all of the showers if they are not all being used at the same time? two up stairs, one downstairs and the hot water cylinder and boiler are upstairs in the main bathroom next to the main shower?

I have the exact setup you described. But loads of pressure on the cold feed to bath/shower mixer tap. It's just the hot feed that dribbles. I assume I need Stuart Turner Techflo TP Standard 2.0 Bar Single Impeller Shower Pump - 49086 for £85. And that I cut into the hot water feed. Can I do it with a plastic pipe? I am in a rental property and on leaving I have to put it back to as found. So my thought is to cut into their 22mm copper pipe to interrupt the flow. Install the pump. Then when I finally leave take out the pump and patch the copper pipe.

In determining whether a positive head or negative pump is needed you say 1 litre per minute is needed from the existing tank set up - is that where the pump will be fitted or at the highest point that the shower head will be situated? Thanks

Great video. I've got a question mate. We have a shower pump to our main bathroom fed by gravity water tank and vented cylinder storage. Problem is when the shower is on it works fine, but once you turn off the shower tap the water pump engine is still working and it won't switch off! I have to go up to the loft to turn the fuse switch off to stop it and over heating. Why doesn't it isolate the water pump off? It used to work a fine before... Many thanks!
@duber1439
@duber1439 3 года назад
If the shower valve is passing water 💧 in the off position, You don’t give the location of the shower pump. If the location of the pump is in the loft, It should be a negative head pump , If not check the pressure switch. Don’t understand why 13 Amp spur switch is in the loft. Unless pump is located in the bathroom 🚽

Some neat copper pipework bending between the cold and hot supplies from the mixer dropping down to the shower pump. Some guidance on this pipe bending wizardry to avoid clashes (crossover's) and then back to the wall for pipe support would be much appreciated - both 15 and 22?. Great video and presentation as always James...

How do you pipe up the pump differently if you want the pump to run a shower only vs kicking in for all hot taps in the house as well? I've seen it that some people want the pump to run just a shower and have the hot taps gravity only bypassing the pump and also seen it where people want the pump to kick in for the whole house. Please explain how you'd pipe both ways. Thanks.

Hello Mate You videos are really great. My plumber has installed a salamander pump for my new bathroom. But the pressure is not very great. I can see that from my tanks(hot on floor level and cold in loft) the pipes coming out are 22mm which coming upto my bathroom. But in old bathroom out of those main 22mm supply , sink and shower used to have a 15 mm pipes. But the guys who did the rework on bathroom has taken the input for shower pump from 15mm old pipes and i think same he has put to shower and other areas of bathroom. Can you suggest if this could be problem for the low pressure. Also like to ask if input pipe to pump can be 22m while outgoing can be 15 mm?

I’ve watched your vid twice now. Love your style and straightforward approach. As an amateur DIYer, gonna take the plunge and give this a go. Two Qs: 1) can’t find those inline strainers anywhere. Can you share a link. 2) Going to site my pump next to he tank in airing cupboard however my CW / HW feed needs to go back into the loft to rejoin existing 22mm pipe work back and down to the shower. Is this a problem going back up to loft using 22mm > 15mm > 22mm ?

If pumping hot only to a mixer tap make sure you use a Universal pump to ensure it starts every time. The higher pressure on the cold side of the mixer can prevent the flow switch on a positive head pump from working correctly.

Every plumber that comes to my house says fit a combi (we only have about 9.5 litres/min flow on shared mains, or go unvented! Hi Barry, it's maybe a little late to reply to this question but yes, depending on hot water demand and working pressures etc, gravity systems are still fitted and in some circumstances, they can be the best option for a customer.

WHAT IS THE FLOW FROM ANY INSTALLED SHOWER OR OTHER OUTLET WITHOUT A PUMP FITTED? - We have a gravity fed system in our home and in our bathroom upstairs on our bath tub we mixer taps installed with a middle plunger that we pull up for the shower hose head. Would this test filling up a 1 liter jug be from ONLY the hot water tap on full or with both hot and cold taps both on full through the shower hose head when doing the test to see how much water has filled up in the bucket/jug over 60 seconds? Thanks

I have this exact pump Stuart turner ecomate 2 bar. It's being used for approximately only 2 hours in total. It feeds two showers. Only one shower is ever used at any one time. Today it stopped working again. When I turn on the showers there is only a dribble of water and the shower just makes a humming sound. I turned off the pump and ran the showers in all positions as you did in the video to purge the pump but it made no difference. Any ideas what could be the problem. Thanks for your help.

After posting this I disconnected the pump from the power and water connections to take a closer look at it. When I looked at the bottom of the pump I could see where crystals had formed on the outside of the motor where there is obviously a small leak. I then removed the covers on each end of the pump to have a closer look. Here you should be able to turn the motor shaft freely but it wouldn't turn. It was completely seized. I proceeded and removed the plastic wheels off either end of the shaft that are used to propel the water through the pump. I then clamped a vice grip on one end of the motor shaft and gave it a good hard twist to get the motor moving again it worked. I reassembled and connected the pump back up to the water and power supply. Before turning on the power I purged the pump. I then turned on the power and tried the shower again. It now works again but a small leak remains at one end of the motor. As far as I know you cannot get spare parts for motor for this particular pump. The motor is in one sealed unaccessible unit. So I was told by a Stuart turner agent in Ireland. I was left with no option but to order a new one or else a different model. I can assure you the leak was not caused by the water being too hot (65 degrees Celsius as mentioned in there manual) entering the pump. Tank emersion turns off at 50 degrees Celsius. Also the leak happened on the side where the cold water was connected not the hot. I reckon it's just a cheap crappy pump. I would not recommend it to anyone. Hope this helps someone out.

Does the pump have to be the last thing before the shower, or can be it upstream from everything else in the house (the taps)? We have a shower which is just a bit weak, but everything else is fine, but it'd be annoying to have to replumb everything so this can be placed correctly. Not sure where abouts my shower pipes come off the main supplies after the hot water tank.

It's the vest! 😂 Good video Jimmy 👏 A couple of things for Wednesday: Should the hot supply pipe from the CW tank be slightly higher than the cold. So if the tank should run low the hot would stop running and prevent scalding. Perhaps it doesn't matter with a thermostatic valve? Would you advise the use of a flange to prevent air from the hot finding its way into the pump? Why use strainer valves when there are filters in the pump and at the shower valve?

WHAM! Are alive and well. Haha Love it. Seriously though, this video is great. It took me a while to learn all of this from a lot of reading.

Thanks for this , You've put my mind at rest over a couple of concerns re an installation I've just had done. Unfortunately though, his pipework is a bit like spaghetti!

A bit late to reply now, but sometimes you can get some debris left over from manufacturing the pump, as well as bits of limescale or dust or whatever from the tank. You don't want this getting into your shower valve.

Do you suggest screwing the pump down? I imagine there would be some movement on the rubber feet when running.

Hi James. What if my pipe arrangements are different. I have my cold water inlet at the top and my hot water outlet at the bottom of my tank. Can I still connected a pump to the outlet please?

Hi 1.5 bar water pump 3 storey house, if one show at the 2nd floor is in use, the 3rd floor shower, no water coming out. Will this be posible to upgrade the water pump into 3bar without any other modification like fuse box etc.

Ive been asked to install a twin impella pump in the loft. Ive always installed them in the airing cupboard. Is it ok to put it in the loft?

Should the feet sit on a solid surface (not screwed down just resting)?Just had this exact pump installed and there is few mm clearance under the rubber feet, so it is hanging from the flexible hoses. Could this be why the pump is very noisy compared to the one in your video?

This is great, I have one question - We have the same set up but after about 10 minutes the pump shuts off and the shower stops, then once the tank in the loft fills again (about 20 minutes) the pump starts again ... is the pump drawing more water than the tank can refill thus less pressure - How do I cure that?

Fit a bigger or secondary tank in the loft.

Or you can link a second 50 gal tank to the first. You do not need a second ball valve, just link them from the outlet piping and tee that pipework together.

James, I’ve got 3 bar on my mains cold feed but 0.5 bar on the gravity fed hot. Can you do a vid we’re only the hot is pump pressurised and a equalising valve is used to balance the two?

He didn't, and he used 15mm pipe instead of 22mm. Cut a few corners which is a bit misleading.

Could you tell me please tell where you purchase your 15mm inline valves with Y strainer, struggling to find them, it is either a stop valve or the Y strainer not both :(

Can the hot feed faucets degrade on these? I’ve got black specks in my hot water in the bath, which is supplied via one of these pumps. I’ve replaced the tap faucets but still have the problem, am wondering if the pump faucets are on their way out. It is at least 15yrs old. None of my other hot taps show any specks, so it is definitely something on this pumped circuit.
