For anyone interested in the reason why we use 6inch from top and 9inch from bottom for hinge location (150 & 225mm) ...This is because traditionally doors were jointed using mortice and tenon (real wood, panel doors). Locating the hinges at these heights meant we avoided chopping into end grain of the mortise and tenon joints at the top and bottom rails of the doors.

Robin your videos are like gold dust. You follow through in a methodical manner explaining in simple terms, why certain tasks are carried out in a particular order, with short cut tips for both the professional tradesperson and diy enthusiast. Can’t wait for the next one in the series.

Absolutely true!! I’ve just been let down by our builder who is running off with about £4k of our money. Time to roll up my sleeves, let it go and crack on with it myself. Robin, can you do a video explaining different types of door linings and how you match them to the timber used on a partition wall? Just about to corner off a downstairs toilet 😅

Hello everyone .. this is all good to see again and makes me think of a little story that I regret still to this day .. my Father In Law and I were a fitting team back in the early 90's, I was a young know it all 22 yr old and took very little notice of him as he patiently showed me exactly what Robin has been showing us recently through his video's including this one. I struggled in the years following working for myself with 1st & 2nd fix works, because I didn't respect what my FIL was trying to teach me when I had the chance too ... so young 'uns .. take note of these age old methods, yes they can be tweaked to how you work, old school cool is ALWAYS best =) .. love your work Rob, keep it going.
@SkillBuilder
@SkillBuilder 5 лет назад
SBUK69 Don't beat yourself up, one thing you understand when you get older is that kids lack perspective and they also think youth is a permanent condition. Your Father-In-Law knew that because he was once young. If we lived our lives backwards we would know which bits of our education and experience would serve us best.

Thanks for the reply, yes as very often mentioned hindsight is a great thing. I do try and make an effort with any apprentices that come our way, but can’t help but notice I little bit of me in them 😩.. keep the vids coming, anything on the renovation side of the trade would be great to watch I’m sure. Cheers

Hi Robin,I'm a retired Bricklayer,I think you and I would have built some perfect houses.That little bit of extra thought you put into your work certainly makes a difference.The joiners I have worked with loved my chamber floor levels. Being on pricework is great when the last tradesman has considered the next guy. I had a 3ft Stabila level blow off a block of flats in Germany, went down 6 floors and picked it up,it was still spot on. Your vids are great.

Robin Clevett I don't hang any doors now as I'm not a fan of doing it so I haven't checked. Never liked it unless I put the lining in because they usually weren't plumb, straight, and were twisted. I always enjoyed framing, roofs and floors, first fix mainly. I was thinking about hanging doors after this video and wondered about making the lining up and fitting the door and possibly architraves to one side. Use the door to square up the lining before fitting the architraves with a brace on the opposing side cut flush . Fit the hinge side first of the lining using the architrave as a stop so it sits flush to the wall. If you get the hinge side plumb and the door squares the frame it would automatically plumb the lock side for you. Just a case of packing and screwing it in place and checking for bows etc. It would also ensure the jambs were't twisted. The only thing you forgot mate was to sight in the jambs to each other across the opening. Cheers 👍👌
