In this video I change a rotten set of timber garage doors, the frame was also rotten and I had to completely change the legs!!!, I have no power here so I have access to a really nice Metabo cordless vacuum and the new Metabo cordless plunge saw
This is a typical day in the life of a modern carpenter

That is one of the easiest locks to brake, just a pair of stilsons on the barrel and it soon twists and snaps the two brass screws holding it in place. These are very common locks in Spain on metal doors, and we always weld a steel ring round the part that protrude on the front. I would advise to change for the short one if it just sits flush with the wood.

As a recent woodworking enthusiast, I'm enjoying the videos Robin, thanks very much. This one was especially helpful as I' m going to replace my old battered aluminium garage door this weekend with a pair of Jeld Wen wooden doors. As you say, they are so reasonably priced - glazed version for just over 250 quid !! - and they look really nice. Shame that one of the panes of obscured glass has a hairline crack. I asked the supplier if there was any chance of sourcing a replacement pane, but he said that the manufacturers get the glass from Estonia, so the chances of finding an exact match locally are pretty slim I would think, and a pane that isn't a perfect match would look far more noticeable than a hairline crack. Never mind, still very pleased with them for the price. Thanks again. :-)

When I fit my garage timber doors Robin I soaked the 'goal post' frame in clear oil based Cuprinol and let it soak up the grain to avoid rot. Also I use Sikens HLS Cetol to preserve and protect, brilliant product. Doesn't flake, just flat down and go on with an extra coat. Great video.

And at 09:57 there were 85,000 viewers all shouting at their screens "It's on top of the vacuum, right in front of you" :) Excellent video and channel, I've been binge watching for a couple of months now. You have a great teaching style and your videos are really informative. I served a 5 year apprenticeship as a joiner back in the early 90's , unfortunately the company I was with went pear shaped in the recession in the late 90's along with a lot of other building companies and it was difficult getting another job in the trade, so I ended up with a complete career change and working in an office. Watching you videos really has me missing working on site, the job, the mates and the banter. Though i still have the uncontrollable addiction to buying new tools :)

Hi Robin Just watched your video on hanging garage doors 2 things I learned & or was told was 1) When cutting the bottom of the garage doors was to cut them on an angle this cuts down on the amount of wood touching the floor then dress the cut with tar or in this case you could use your tape 2) strap hinges I always lined the pin of the hinge with a rolled up coke can as a sleeve that way it stopped the end play and stopped hinge from flopping about but it didn’t bind the hinge I learnt these tips from an elderly Irish Carpenter by the name of Danny he was such a clever guy and a brilliant teacher and workmate anyway I hope you find the 2 tips useful take care & stay safe

Many Sharpened Saws ago as a young lad was working on this small building site. The older Carpenter/Joiner Bill liked a drink or two (understatement god bless him). It was a Monday morning and there was ice all over the house windows inside and out (no heating remember). As it was a Monday Bill had no money so he came up with a plan to get some dosh/money to buy a beer or two. Bill dragged in this old lumber/timber it was 10 feet long approx 8 inches wide and 4 inches thick all rough sawn. Bill had drawn up his plans on the window ice he was going to "Rip" by hand the 10 feet long lumber/timber into two parts. like i have said it was freezing cold with ice all over the windows "Ah the building trade in winter". Bill had all his winter clothes on at this time. I looked in on Bill about 2 hours later the windows had defrosted in room he was working in Bill was down to his vest with sweat dipping of him sharpening his "Henry Disston" for the 3rd or 4th time. Bills hand saw looked 5 times smaller than anyone else saw he sharpened it that many times. (Ps Henry Disston saws are now £100 and collectable so they say). Bill had hand ripped the lumber hand planed the same there was wood shavings everywhere. Bill plan was to make two stretcher clothes wood poles with a birds mouth at the end to hold up a washing line then sell them to one of persons in the houses across the road from us and go and buy a bottle of cheap wine or beer with the proceeds. They looked a million dollars the stretcher clothes wood poles when Bill had finished them they where perfect edges all sandpapered so no sharp edges a work of art for sure. Bill ended up with £5 for his 5 hours of hard work.....Later that day the boss came on site and gave everyone a bollocking for not working hard enough (ah the building Trade) The boss praised Bill as he could see he had been the only person working really hard with all the wood shavings and sawdust in his house and Bill down to his vest ...Such is life and now battery power tools Bill would have a field day I am sure.

You forget to mention one of the most important steps when hanging any exterior door, a step many joiners can't be arsed with, probably because you can't tell once it's hung. Treating the bottom of the door before you hang it, especially the stiles, and in this case, the trimmed match board. I probably wouldn't on garage doors, but I always fit a drip, not one of the oversized off the shelf ones, but a smallish one made up in the workshop, it all helps to protect the bottom edge of the door.

Hi robin , nice job, you clearly know your stuff, Just be aware with security locks were the cylinders stick out from the face of the door, they are vulnerable to attack. With out fitting security escutcheons. See this a lot and every scallywag knows about how easy cylinder locks open when they stick out....
