In this second episode of HOW TO FIT KING COMMON RAFTERS AND HIPS, Tony, Pete and Dan Cox with his ultimate roofing square give you roofing tips and tricks whilst explaining the process of hip rafter cuts.Dan demonstrates how to use a roofing square to measure up for a birdsmouth cut and a plumb cut on the hip rafter.Tony talks through the hip rafter length and the guys finally show you how to throw hip rafters perfectly into place.Tony gives a quick recap of the who;e process from setting out and cutting common rafters, fitting a ridge board which is then held in place by the king common rafters and then as you have just seen installing hip rafters. We hope you enjoyed this roofing masterclass and it gives you an insight into how frame a hip roof.

Love it!!. Possibly the best part of hand cutting a roof is dropping in the hip and seeing how lovely it lines in with the rest of all the rafters.😍 Cheers for the video fellas.👍

How many of you guys know that If you was going to do this back in the olden days,you would keep the point of the hip plumb cut right up to the ridge line and back the both edges of the hip rafter off,this is known as the dihedral angle so the middle of the hip rafter would plane through with the top edge of the commons and jack rafters,I wonder how many of us remember this from our college days,robin clevett would I’m sure. Great vids guys keep them coming
@BuildWithAE
@BuildWithAE 3 года назад
Hi coggsy3036 I remember the dihedral very well it’s something that will be shown in a big roof coming up later also 3” hips would always do dihedral angles, but most of the time 2” we don’t do the angle all the best Tony 👍

Bevelling the tops of the hips gives one more meat to nail the battens into. The same applies if one is sheathing the roof with ply/Osb.

The English crack me up ! As a pro carpenter I figured out in the 1 st day on the job I need a tool belt! A good tool belt and wear it correctly not all the weight on one side and thoughtfully put together! You guys do great work considering all the “ where’s my” , “hv you seen” , “ do you know where” and thousands of others! For a couple hondos your in a great belt? I do enjoy seeing all those tools hanging off your pants or digging stuff outta those tiny little cloth pockets !

Recently did my 1st hipped roof. I did it solo which was stupid. 3 hips and 3 valleys. Bit ambitious for my first time, especially as I was having to marry into the original with Rosemary's, valley tiles and hip bonnets. Not 1000% happy with it. The plates weren't super square. I knocked them about abit and 345ed the corners until I got it where I was reasonably happy but something was wrong. It was hard doing it alone. Couldn't measure from corner to corner properly. It was parallel but not square and I don't know how. I cut the Kings the same, a few commons and the hips the same. Everything seemed to be working perfectly. But cutting the hip Jack's in pairs made me realise something was off. But it was only a few mm so I carried on, coz I had to get it done. I struggled with the valleys. Especially the connecting valleys. The angle up the valley boards wasn't working. So I started to panic that I had gotten the pitch wrong. I climbed into the attic and checked about 10x rafters and they were all 41degrees there abouts. So I couldn't understand what wasn't working.

@@BuildWithAE a big part of me is resisting buying Dan's square. Makes it seem too easy. I wanna know I understand it all 1st. I think I do, but doing this hipped roof has knocked me about abit. I kept the pitch then same, I kept the hips and valleys as 45 as possible. I cut the Jack's in pairs which I imagined would keep everything at least within 45. I even added a dragon brace detail using the offcuts from the hip birdsmouth. But something hasn't worked 100% and its driving me mad. Am I being too fussy? I reckon I might come to your thing
