My daughter just called me very upset because her dealership in Atlanta charged her $200 to look at this issue and told her it’s a $4700 repair. They said they have to replace roof rails and the headliner due to stains. This is why they are called stealerships. I’ll be doing this when she comes home for Christmas. Thanks for the great video.
Thank you very much I had water coming in the roof of my 2019 rav4 I did the the fix for less than $20 and it worked the dealer wanted to charge me over $1000 Thanks again
Excellent video. This is the simplest repair technique for the roof rail leak recommended on the RAV4World forum. Only thing to add is at the very front of the rail in front of that long white clip there is a flat rectangular clip that you should put a new piece of 3M double sided tape on to replace the OEM tape. Other than the silicon you can use butyl rubber caulk or tape. Also you can just seal up the holes in the roof with plugs or caulk and just use the 10mm bolts to hold on the rails.
After watching and reading your comment, that would be my recommendation also. I work in the aircraft repair industry and I used a different sealant design to withstand all the stresses of fight.
Thanks! This method worked for any cars with leaking roof rail. My 2012 Volvo XC60 started leaking at A-pillar at 10 years old. It's not from windshield. Not from sunroof drain. It turned out to be leaking from roof rail bolt holes around the gaskets. I sealed them with Sikaflex polyurethane-based Construction Sealant and no more water leak! I think it'll happen to any car eventually so it's good to learn how to do this. The seal is not going to last forever. 10 years is the time it's likely fail even it won't leak for new cars. No need to caulk the whole roof channel like some people did. That's just dumb. The water channel act as gutter to divert water to back and front of the car.
Thats why you always buy a lower toyota trim like a LE and then just fill in the blanks with after market stuff. That's a reliable toyota right there. Toyota does basic really well - they build workhorses not sunroofs :D
Thanks for the video. My car doesn't leak yet but I notice I put a lot of force and weight to the roof rail when washing the car. That can put a lot of stress on the white long plug. I might just remove the white plug and cover the hole.
I just pulled off my rails and it was a shitload harder that what I saw in this video. Two of the front clip mounts broke off from the underside of the rails. They're setting up with JB Weld right now, so I guess I can't finish this until tomorrow. Oh, and yes, be sure to put a new piece of the grey outdoor 3M double-sided tape on the area in the very front of the rails. This will keep the wind from lifting them up.
Yes. I have a 2021 and no leak yet. I was recently at dealership for service and asked about this issue. The service advisor said that as of now they are only fixing it if it’s started leaking. Doesn’t seem right to me why not get ahead of this. Seems like such a quick and easy thing.
@@billjoang that's wild they won't fix obvious issue till it leaks. so your car needs to be damaged first. sad . good luck. I say just do it , if you haven't already.
I have a 2019 and was going through the same issue. I contacted Toyota brand engagement center and they told me it was covered under the Toyota customer support program which is an extended warranty 10 years after purchase. Got to the dealership they tried to charge me, I told them it was covered under the program. Then the manager came out and said it was covered 😊

Great video! Just washed my rav4 2019 and noticed that both front pillars were wet. Found this video and bought the products to do the repair. Surprised that Toyota did not make this a recall. Be careful when removing the rails the main front white mounting plug can break off part of it’s mounting assembly from the rail itself. If this does not work I will be plugging the holes .
Just called Toyota and they said until it leaks they won’t do anything to my car. That’s crazy. It’s not a recall in Canada. It should be as it can knock out the electrical.
Wife's older Rav4 with this issue. Thank you! Now, I want to know HOW RU-vid made this video available when I didn't even search for it? Oh, my. Totally crazy.
My Toyota RAV4 is 2019 same problem that you said water leaking & water was coming front passenger side floor mats thanks God it is manufactured problem dealer took 3days to fix but thanks again it was free.
This just happened to me today. I heard water in the car and couldn’t figure out where it was coming from. There is water stains inside above the windows. I called the dealer and made an appointment but I will cancel because I’m not paying over a thousand dollars for that. The only thing that concerns me is the water that I hear swishing around. Can I get that out? Will it damage anything? Edit: I took the car in and Toyota is covering it. It was “approved”. Specialist are coming out to clean the mold. The headliner will also be replaced. It’s gonna take about three weeks or so because of the mold. I did get a rental. A recall would have avoided all of this.
Good tip! Some things can actually ruin rubber so using silicone based products is important to avoid damage. I think it's the petroleum based products that cause damage to rubber if it's applied to it.
We just let if be and dried out. Some little stains inside but not bad. Try Maybe running heat inside to try out. Even throw a home dehumidifier in there. Use dry vac etc. otherwise, take apart.
Nice work! BTW water leak issue not only happened on RAV4, but also on the Corolla Cross. I don’t get it why Toyota still use this kind of design for their new cars.
Hi thanks for sharing the video. Instead of using Permatex Ultra Black (82180) which sticks the surface permanently, can I use Optimum Black (27037) for ease of disassembling but which may also mean less durability?
Toyota Regional Consumer Affairs dept told me they would give me 700.00 off the repair if brought to local dealership......... which they told me was 3800.00. I asked for an email outlining this offer... they adamantly refused to put it in writing. I will be picking up a tube of this sealant, and have my mechanic drop the headliner, and see if the airbags are compromised or if the leaking was superficial and more of an annoyance. My FIRST and LAST Toyota.
Thanks for this video. Wife and I have been struggling with this for a while now. It appears Toyota has also acknowledge their poor design and fixed it for 2022 models.
As if 12/11/23 Toyota hasn’t issued a a recall or a TSB on the problem. I’ve spoken with a few dealers and Toyota is well aware of the situation. Hopefully they’ll get it right.
Hi, thanks for the video. I have lexus nx 300 2021 and it did not come with the side rails installed. I bought the rails and want to install them, but the roof does not have holes. It just have marks where to drill. So what do you recommend should I drill and put silicon as gaskets? Should I be concerned about leaking water? Thanks
Wow so thankful for your upload! I just purchased a 2019 about 2 months ago. Live in Florida and it's now storm season, noticed my car was super humid after rain. Finally witnessed the leak while in the car during a storm. Will be fixing this this weekend! Thank you.
Thanks so much for this video! This is exactly what is happening to my 2017 RAV4. Do you know how to do this on the 2017 model that has rails? Don’t know how to get the rails off to get to these gaskets. Thank you!
Does that Permatex remain soft or will it harden? How difficult would it be to remove the rail again in case you needed to add extra gasket/seals. Thanks for sharing this tip
Mine is not leaking yet but I just completed these steps. Im so surprised I didn't have a leak yet because mine didn't even have gaskets where the holes in the roof are so they must have been peeled off a long time ago. Thanks for this tutorial on this fix!
Wifey just noticed a pillar is wet after a full day of almost nonstop rain, she heard water moving around above her head. Wondering if the rails drain thru the same place as when water enters the sunroof. I visibly verified the front holes of the sunroof are clear, I mean we never open it so other then dust I saw no debry. Guessing I'll have to disassemble the tracks, reading thru comment I wont even waste time going to dealer since I am out of warranty
I saw a video where the sunroof is known to clog. You have to clear the drain or else it will come into you car. So it could be the sunroof or the racks or both causing your problem.
Hey everyone, I just had this happen to my 2021 Rav4 Adventure! I have the high profile roof rails and I couldn't figure out how to remove them, and it is very different from the ones in this video. I didn't want to try to take out the headliner so I brought it my local Toyota Dealer to see what they would say about the problem. FYI, I bought mine used, out of warranty from a non-Toyota dealer. The Toyota dealer looked up the problem and said the issue is logged in their system and they actually said "it's not a recall yet but we will take care of this for you at no charge" they said they are also going to look for "organic growth" obviously meaning mold... I'm actually super impressed that Toyota is fixing this for me. It's being fixed right now, they said they had to order some parts. My advice is to take it to the dealer to see if they'll take care of if for you....Thanks so much for the video, it was super helpful!
Hello , Which is the dimension of each gasket ? I Buy a box with the different gaskets , but i not know is the correct , please your help . Regards from Mexico !
Thanks a lot man. Dealer asked for $350 just to look at it and keep telling me that I have dropped the garage door on top of my car (maybe in my dream and I forgot). I left the dealer without further conversation and looking online for solution.
I just received a letter from Toyota yesterday they are going to fix this issue and guarantee it for 10 years, they say its not a recall, but they are going to fix it
OMG Same exact thing & same time frame (3) years. Wasn’t yours covered under warranty? I think 🤔 it’s covered under warranty (36) months or certain number of mileage.
This is a factory defect...and Toyota does not want to respond...and it also affects the electrical system, it also creates mold inside the car and you don't realize it.
Hey sir Thank you so much for your video. I have a question My 2014 rav4 leaks tots of water on the driver floor mat when it rains.Do you think I could do same thing to fix?
Just washed my 2021 Rav4 Adventure and water was literally leaking into the car, I couldn't believe it! I found this video and I'm going to do this fix! My roof rails look more aggressive, I'm hoping the fix will be the same, any thoughts??? It looks like a class action suit just came out. Thank you for the video!
You’re awesome! Just bought a 2021 RAV4 and freaked out when I found out about this issue. Will be proactively repairing it thanks to your video! Thank you so much!
Good because Toyota won’t do anything for you until it leaks. Who wants to wait for that. Too late then. I have a 2020 Rav and need to get this done too. In another video a guy used the silicone washer and the sealant. Double duty.
I assume you are in the US but in Canada I just got a Warranty Enhancement Program notice from Toyota Canada for my Rav4 Hybrid Limited. It covers 2019-2021 Rav4, Rav4 Hybrid and 2021 Rav4 Prime. "The specific condition covered by this program is roof rail water leaks from the roof rail mounting clips. If a water leak has been verified, the vehicle will be inspected and repaired with new roof rail clips, and Toyota will clean, replace and/or repair water damaged parts under the terms of this Warranty Enhancement Program. The Warranty Coverage is applicable for 10 years from the date of first use, regardless of the mileage".
@@Maddog-nb9vu I contacted my local dealership and they informed that it’s covered under warranty enhancement. I just have to come down for inspection and later for any part replacement. Thank you for sharing it. Hope they fix it.
I had to do this to mine today. 50,000 miles. I noticed the slight discoloration near the sun visors. Mostly on the passenger side. I hope this does the trick. I will let you know. Thank You!!!!😊The factory gaskets just crumbled, when I removed them, just like in your video.
@@mohit4902 I have an XLE so it is not true. Just found out mine was leaking & thought it was the window shield replacement but it was exactly what was explained in the videeo
