My name is Bre. I took two years of small engine repair at the local college. When I left school, I fell into a wonderful job at a local small engine shop where I worked the counter for a couple years. In 2010 my husband and I opened up our own small engine shop in central Arkansas where I am able to work alongside my family and best friends. We see over 2,000 pieces of small engine equipment every year, and answer 1,000's of small engine questions. We specialize in brands such as Briggs and Stratton, Kohler, Echo and Shindaiwa, but work everyday on MANY other brands like Stihl, Husqvarna, Honda, Craftsman, Remington, Red Max, Troy Bilt, Scag, Bad Boy, Hustler, World Lawn, Poulan, Mantis, Etc.. Hopefully, my experience I share, will save you Time, Money and Frustration in the future!

Great video. I have a Ryobi weed whacker that my neighbor threw out because he said it didn't run. Had been sitting so long that the fuel lines rotted off. New fuel lines and a aftermarket carb and it started right up. I have been using it for six years!
@rlb9121
@rlb9121 2 года назад
Another good one, that fuel filter not getting into the fuel is critical, they'll lose prime, or just won't pull enough fuel to start, what actually happens also is the fuel line shrinks in length over time. I just retired from a shop, we worked on most everything, we sold Shindaiwa back in the day before Echo bought them, the older Shindaiwa T260 was probably the best power to weight ratio trimmer ever sold on this planet. We had contracts with interstate highway cleanup crews here in Texas, they would bring us their trimmers daily, we would repair, they would pickup the next morning. Small engine repair is actually fun, challenging also at times. You do good work, you have a mind for it.
@brendanfromnz
@brendanfromnz 2 года назад
It was a sad day when Echo bought them out and killed off the best range of line trimmers ever built. You've just got to grab good ones whenever they come up for sale now. There must be some truth to what you say, because the 260 is by far the hardest model to find. They very rarely (almost never) appear on the second hand market, at least where I am. 230's come up a fair bit, and the odd 270 now and again though most are in very well used condition by now. People who own them tend to want to keep them.

@@brendanfromnz I have 1 T260 and 3 T230s and I will never get rid of them. I had a T270 and I sold it to a friend and 2 years later it’s still running good and he loves it.

In the early part of this video, you talked about having to replace a cylinder head because of a cross threaded spark plug. I personally used to « heli-coil » cylinder heads. Much less expensive than a new head and is far more resistant to future cross threading as the new threads are very hard stainless steel versus soft aluminum. When I started business in 1977, all new Stihl chain saws came with the spark plug holes heli-coiled from the factory. I’ve heli-coiled heads in place by coating the flutes of the tap with grease to reduce the chances of aluminum chips falling into the cylinder, then needle nose pliers to break off the tang of the heli-coil. You don’t want that to fall in the engine. Homelite had a factory not far from my shop, and they also used heli-coils in spark plug threads if they screwed up the threads during production, rather than scrapping the part.

My Toro mower has a threaded opening on the top for your water hose, leave it running right after mowing and thread the hose into it and turn the water on, no lifting it up at all. Hi Bre from the UK, I have really enjoyed watching your videos, even the ones for equipment I don’t have or repair! I have learnt so many tips etc, and as I’ve been a mechanic for nearly 50 years, but not on small engines. I’m now a retired ,one legged wheelchair jockey, and have moved onto the wonderful world of small engines, and begun to regularly say every-days a school day! I brought a used Stihl fs90r last season, which started and ran fine. This year (after a tip from Steve’s small engines) I acquired a Kombi hedge trimmer attachment,. This season started to have issues with lack of power, and it stopping and not easily starting. So stripped the valve gear out, changed the worn burnt camshaft, but was unable to obtain the updated cover with the added oil feed bar to the cam! Anyway it starts and appeared to run, tickover fine, but decided to check the compression etc. That was only 60 psi, so looks like valves or a replacement piston rings and barrel (cylinder) which this side of the pond is £75 ouch. Gonna run with it for now though as it strims just fine. The thing is, there doesn’t appear to be many videos on these 4 mix engines, which appear to be a marmite product over here. I personally like the easy starting, torque, and sound (also quieter) but although there’s videos on the camshaft, I haven’t found any on the carburettor, (which is a bit different to the normal) or low compression, and engine strip replacement. Maybe a hole you could fill? Any way stay safe, and keep up with the fun videos!!!

I am a retired mechanic . I work on 18 wheelers from the 80s into the 90s . A car accident prematurely retired me . Yep it sucked but life goes on . I got the C word before it was a popular thing and boy it took it toll on me . I am lucky I am here . Well enough of that stuff . I had a poulan chain saw thaw did not run well new back in 2005 . I used it for a small home job and put it away . Then I came across your videos . They made me start to think . I am still trying to get stronger from the C word . Let's take a look at this thing . It has not ran since 2006 maybe 2007 . I fallowed one of your videos and went over it . It looks like new . Changed the plug and good fresh fuel . It popped off and ran better then ever . This was just yesterday . I would like to say thank you and God Bless you . You videos go a long way .

I have been servicing my 2 stroke toys using chinesium carbs gor years . Generally my experience is good. But, I have twice now found the Chinese umbrella carbs for the Honda FG110 run well, bit after one season, the throttle return spring gives out. The throttle Shafts are plastic, and just a little debris from use (and that cheap foam filter) and the shafts bind up. Stick with the OEM (Walbro) in this case.

On the odd occasion you might find yourself with a dud copy carby, in those situations I used to soak the original in clean fuel disassembled and would blow out all jets and orifices and take the diaphragm off the new carb which was almost identical to the old one and any seals , treating the new Carby as parts. That pretty much always got me going again … storing your tools for a month or longer makes it worth draining old fuel. Where I live it’s pretty hot over summer (often over 30 deg C ) so for short term storage of two strokes tools I fill the tank and top up with raw petrol before running to replace the evaporated petrol and keep the mix right . Love the show 🙃🙂

Sad when "OEM" parts for an aftermarket tool is so crazy expensive. I had a southland 2T auger, same carb. I replaced the diaphragm and it "sort of" fixed the problem, still needed a bit of choke to run well. The owner didn't want to sink any more $$ in it to dig 8 holes. Cheers!

In 1976 had a lot of 2 cycles come into our shop class and I got almost every one running by stripping them down of all filters and using a spray bottle of 2 cycle gas oil mix and cranking them to get stuck reeds free ! We did have actual gas back then ! I was a student . The amount of engines to be fixed 4 cycle or two cycle motors that came in that our school complained that it was too much noise and we had to tone it down . 4 cycles that came in at that time just needed a nice cleaning of the magneto and a flush of clean fuel to make them rock !

It's always so satisfying when a job works right. :) Our switching from Made-in-China parts is going to take quite a while, if it ever really does work. A lot of the manufacturing companies that came back a few years ago are probably gunshy at the latest changes, and the rest that were planning on coming home are probably watching things reallll closely.

Heck, Stihl and alot of Echo stuff has cheap Chinese Zama carburetors. I've got some old gray Echo SRM260s with Walbros still going strong. The Zama equipped units, not so much. Buy Redmax, they all have good ol' Walbros that'll stand the test of time.

lol thats not an air filter, thats a mud collector. Great stream! Thanks for sharing - So that is the only solution? just buy another one. I wonder is there a way to make the old carby work?
