After completing my first video on how to fix a broken carabiner gate some viewers asked about how to fix a carabiner in cases where the whole gate spring had come out. I replied in the comments trying to describe how to replace the spring, but due to the difficulty in doing so clearly, I decided to make a video demonstrating it as well as aligning the hinge on the gate so it closes straight. Aligning the hinges will also help the gate close straighter, which can help prevent the spring from coming out.
In this video, I demonstrate both how to put the gate spring back in as well as adjusting the gate hinge so it closes straight. I hope this helps those who have had difficulties with the spring coming out.
Thanks for watching!

Omg, I succeded in repairing it! The little metal stick was halfway out, I couldn't take it back in, so I pull it all the way out and follow your tutorial. I thought it was hopelessly bent and that I would have to throw it away. Thank you so much for this video and for your time, I'm so happy I fixed something without buying something new! 🙏🏻🌼💜☘️🌱

Nice fix thanks! I had a messed up extra large carabiner (from Harbor Freight so ultra cheap) so searched RU-vid, watched your pt 1 video but I got ahead of myself and just pulled the whole metal tab out so had to watch this part! Now it’s fixed and working fine so thanks! Just subscribed!

Thanks! This worked on a much larger one that I use to strap my dirtbike down with. Except I had to pop the rivet out because there was no flex…

Watched this video to see how the spring part works, I’m looking to forge a carabiner for a project, so thanks for showing how the spring fits in. Will have to research what materials I can use for the spring but guessing it’s aluminium?
@ActinOut
@ActinOut 3 года назад
Glad it helped! Sheet metal holds up a bit better than aluminum but with the right grade of aluminum I'm sure it will work. It also depends on the size of the carabiner. Climbing carabiners and other larger more industrial ones engineered for strength do not use this type of spring system.

@@ActinOut ok thank you, I’m thinking sheet metal will be the better idea, sure I can find some in the forge

Definately do not use aluminum or any non-ferrous metal for spring. Spring steal, comparable stainless steel, government steel, or fashion it from a ink pen pocket clip. Dissect ink pens because sometimes you can find pieces of steel very close to the shape you need. Aluminum is not intended to bend back and forth. It will break in less than 10 cycles.

Very clear and understandable video. Unfortunately, even after following along step by step with your explanation, the spring went all the way inside the gate and disappeared. Just posting a comment to let others know to beware that this can happen. I guess it’s time for a new carabiner. Thanks for your video though.

Is there a way to replace the pin if the gate fell off?
@ActinOut
@ActinOut 2 года назад
You're going to need some wire that will fit in that hole depending on the size of the carabiner. Maybe a paperclip, coat hanger or something and cut it a little longer so the ends can be bent over or smashed down a bit (if the metal's soft enough) at either end to hold it in. If bending, be careful because that will be a sharp and will cut, so replace the carabiner when possible.

Thanks... I can't get it to go over the ledge, there's too much resistance, causing my screw driver to slip off 😩

Ok, with brute force and several more tries it worked. Maybe I was too timid. Thanks!

I've pushed the small part in, but why is it still not working and its hard to even get it back out. What's the solution? 🙏
@ActinOut
@ActinOut 2 года назад
My first thought is to wonder if you put the correct end up in. If not it may bind a bit. It may have also twisted which would restrict the spring from flexing. Secondly, to get it back out, slide the gate to the side around the latch and try to pull the spring out with a small pair of needle nose pliers or clamping forceps to reach unto the small space & grab it to pull it out. Hope that helps.

My sides that should be closer to it is a little millimeters wide and it’s loose 😔
@ActinOut
@ActinOut 3 года назад
You'll need to use some pliers of some kind to squeeze the sides closer together. This can also help prevent further problems happening again. This video can help explain it further: m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YIN5SP17Xt4.html

Thank you. Prob 90% of the world doesn't have a harbor freight near them. I've also seen the spring on brand new ones slip out. I've also had them slip out when hunting. It's just helpful to know how to fix it in a pinch and you're not able to just grab a new one quick. Thanks for the comment though.

I was going to comment about fixing a 'real' climbing carabiner. Knock yourself out with that toy.
@ActinOut
@ActinOut 2 года назад
Lol, true that. I thought about showing repairs on various "real" carabiners, but there are so many gate styles, etc that it would take quite an effort to do so, and there's likely a lot more potential liability associated with doing that. A person's life is more at risk repairing a "real" one such that if it had a gate or other problem you will never know the integrity of the material anymore and that risk just should not be taken. If one wanted to fix the gate or other problem on a "real" biner, it should NEVER be used again in "real" situations, particularly climbing or other significant weight-bearing use. That's what ultimately made my decision to not go there and stick with this type of biner. Use "real" carabiners for their intended uses only and only in OEM undamaged and unaltered conditions and NOTHING else. People's safety is just not worth it. @BonefishBoards ... I'm glad you brought those points up ... very valid! Thanks for your comment and input.
