I wish I had this video ready when my old CAAD8 had a creaking bottom bracket (BB30). I took it to the shop it came from, they fixed it, but it came back a week later. Lovely bike, but that creaking could really ruin a otherwise nice ride. There's adapters so you can use Hollowtech and similar cranks instead, but that sounds like you just switch your problem from one to another.

My year old FSA omega that came with Cannondale Synapse developed a problem not covered in this video. Point where the spindle attaches to right crank arm is 'wobbly'. It's meant to be permanently secured. It sucks as I am not the original purchaser, I ebay'ed the bike. Now I need to buy another one, not getting FSA again, obviously. I don't know what else is compatible. Help help.

Justin - I hate to say this, but the real solution is to replace the BB with a quality one. As I noted in another post, companies like Chris King, Hope or Legit Engineering make much higher quality precision milled metal PF BB's that will likely outlast your bike. Not cheap, over $100 to do yourself, but it will completely take care of the problem if you do it right.

For clicks or ticks, the most common issue that I have had has been the pedals. I usually remove the spindle from the pedal body and re-grease it and that almost always takes care of the problem. On an old cup and cone bottom bracket, I found a pit in one of the races. It was amazing how such a small imperfection could make such a loud noise.

Hi, I have gone through all your vids on creaking bikes, just wanted to tell you about another creak in the list of things that creak, I had done the BB twice, and swopped out crank, and chainrings, and pedals, and seatpost, and new cassette, and new hub bearings, and new freehub bearings, and all pivot bearings opened and lubed, along with drop outs and new chain, turns out my rear deralliour was making a creaking noise as it moved milimeters when the chain passed over the jockey wheels in gear, and i don't mean a small creak, this was commented on by other riders a few times, solution was to remove and lube, and check if creaking has gone, then re-fit. thought I would post as it took me over a year to get to the bottom of this creak!

Here's a story about creaking on my bike. Bought it new from a store, rode it for a couple of months (commuting mostly) in all kind of weather and then the creaking started. I thought it was from the BB since it was the BB30 kind and we all know about them. In the next 6 months, I have been to the workshop 3 times and every time they cleaned the BB and lubed it but the creak was still there. We checked everything else (or so we thought) and since the manufacturer does not guarantee for the BB I decided to buy a new one but not BB30, rather I got the conversion to Shimano via a BB converter. As you can imagine, that was not cheap. And to my disappointment, the creaking was still there! In the end, my mechanic, frustrated as much as me, did the cleaning and lubing of the rear mech hanger, and IT WORKED!!!!!!!!! So, instead of a 5min job, and a coffee for my mechanic, I spent nearly 150€ and 9 months on reapring this creak.
@Metal-Possum

In Soviet Russia, creak fixes you! I spent forever making my bike silent. Every time I fixed something noisy, an even quieter noise became more apparent. I was chasing my own tail by the end of it and gave up.

Top tip, put the new bearings and crank in the freezer before fitting. This will make the bearing fit much easier. Once the bearings are in let them warm up to room temperature before pushing the crank through. You should not need to use a drift. Also you risk pushing the bearing out by using a drift.
@SuzukiKid400
@SuzukiKid400 Год назад
Yes, agreed! It's also poor form to great the race of a bearing. Bearings are supposed to rotate on the balls, not on the race.

I was pleasantly surprised to follow these instructions and get rid of the annoying creak in my gravel bike! My bike would creak near my bottom bracket when I was pedaling under load uphill, which drove me crazy. I thought it was bottom bracket at first and replaced that but found it was still there. I took apart and greased the wheel bolts, pedals, rear derailleur, and finally crank bolts which ended up being the source of the noise. After removing the crank bolts, greasing generously, and screwing them back in tightly the creak was gone. Thanks for this video!!

@dwwilde4050 9 лет назад
I haven't read all the comments, but another creak source may have been overlooked. I know everyone seems to have newer frames with internal cable routing, but for those of us with older frames, a source of creaking can be the under the BB cable router. When that plastic (or metal) guide gets clogged with leaves, road grit, sticky stuff dribbling down from your bidon, etc, it can cause a creak when there is sufficient cable tension ( e.g. larger rear cogs). Cleaning this track can sometimes eliminate an otherwise unfathomable creak.

Thanks Simon. I've been chasing creaks on and off since I had cottered cranks on my first, 5-gear road bike (present for my 13th birthday, which my Dad bought for £13 through a classified ad in the local paper. In other words, a few weeks short of 45 years ago.) My experience echoes your advice : cleanliness and a thin film of grease on all flat mating surfaces. Makes disassembly a doddle, too. If, at the end of it all, your steel frame is still creaking, cracked brazing in the BB lug could be your problem (and it's even repairable!) Can't understand why anyone would give this video the thumbs down.

Don't forget that on BB30 bearings like those fitted to Simons bike can be repacked with grease. Just use a blade to pop off the seal covers, flush out with degreaser and repack with grease. Pop the cover back on and repeat on the other side. I've done this twice as I developed a creak after hosing the grease out with a hose pipe over several months and takes 5 minutes per side. It saves you a few quid till payday at least. Check out videos on RU-vid. Have I just given you guys another hack? Bottle or capilino coming my way???

You don't need to chase a specific brand, it'll be standard white lithium grease (AKA lithium soap). It sticks well to metal parts. Is not corrosive, even with plastics and resins, and is quite thermaly stable over a fairly wide range and even under load.

At one of the UCI World Tour bike races last year, I watched as the cyclists came up a 12-15% climb. As soon as they began to stand on the pedals, you could hear almost every bike creak! It only lasted for a second or two, but I think it goes to show that all CF frames with press-to-fit bearings, even when maintained by pros, will creak.

My 5 year old daughter watched this and has decided that she wants a toy set of bike shop tools for her bike. Nice job, Simon! (SO glad I'm clinging to my BSA BB's as long as possible . .... even if I had to order a clone bike frame from China for my new bike to get one...

Thanks for the post. I fixed my pedal creaking after watching this vid. I had worried it was the bottom bracket noise which I do not have tools to grease and install. Lucky me!

If nothing else works check your frame for cracks in the welds. I've had 2 frames that have cracked near to the saddle stem. Both times the creak was only heard while seated but went away when stood on pedals. With the lifetime warranty on the frames, each time I received a free replacement frame from the manufacturer. Always worth checking your frame regularly from a safety perspective.

Great video - thanks for posting. In my case the bottom bracket had failed. 631 miles on the bike which was shocking. Anyway, retailer replaced part under warranty which was nice. Also, the faulty bracket was on tighter than a tight thing, luckily I had a 60" torque wrench, wouldn't have got it off otherwise. Just advice for anyone taking on the bottom bracket. Retailer reckoned it was on too tight from factory, which caused it to fail. Seems plausible I guess.

Having added a new chainset and bottom bracket to my bike, I was frustrated to hear a creaking noise - especially when out the saddle. I immediately thought that the bottom bracket was the likely culprit or maybe some of the bolts attached to the chain rings etc. In addition to the creaking, I was also minded to check the headset as there were some handling issues. Anyway, cleaned out the headset, added new grease - which resolved both the handling issues and the creaking noise! With hindsight, thinking about the headset being the cause of the noise - obviously when out the saddle, there is also a lot of force / weight being put onto the bars / headset. So if checking the bottom bracket or cranks doesn't fix the creak, then maybe have a look at the headset!

I had a noisy creak that was iterating not only myself, I was pretty sure if I kept showing up to my group rides they would eventually drop me for good. After tearing down my crankset and checking for wear on my bottom bracket bearings with no sign of relief of the noisy problem, I checked my pedals. After adjusting my look pedals the noise went away.

Is creaking only a problem with noise or will your bike break because something is wrong

I am not sure. Noise can turn into problems on theory :P

Could also be spokes especially when you get off the seat and putting some flex on the wheels . Really it can be every thing !!!!!!

Two areas of Creaks not obvious are dry pedal bearings, and gritty lower headset bearings.

Can you do an episode on how to adjust your brake pads? Mainly brake chatter (toe-in, worn pads, etc.) I know how to do it, but for anyone else who might have questions might appreciate it. Thanks!

4:20 - Pressfit BB's are notorious for creaking, especially plastic ones. It's 90% likely your bike came with a plastic one from either Shimano or SRAM. The plastic flexes some , and slowly breaks down over time (allowing more elements, like water and grit in). Tens of thousands of bikes have this part and it's about $20 to replace it. Only to have it creak again in a year or so. Solution: Chris King, Hope, Legit Engineering and a few others now make very high quality PF BB's. In fact, King's BB is made of hardened steel and precision milled aluminum cups. They say their BB will outlast three bikes, no matter where or how hard you ride or what the conditions. About $150 for that peace of mind.

yesterday I posted quite a long text about taking off the chainset and wiggling a big screwdriver between the chainwheels. Creak creak! I was convinced I'd found the noise, after cleaning and regreasing everything else (pedals, chainwheels, chainset, bolts, new bottom bracket, new skewers on rear wheel, new chain....). So I posted a long text here. But went out iin the evening, and ..."creak creak". Oh no! This morning I put different rear wheel on and ... no creak! Note that it wasn't the skewers, it must be either the hub, freehub, or cassette. If anyone is interested it's an old Campag Daytona hub with campag 10sp freehub. Hope this helps, and apologies to anyone who read yesterday's post!
