How to Fix a Grass Seed WASHOUT / Fall Overseeding
The day after I over seeded my backyard, a huge rainstorm flooded the lawn! Fall brings cooler weather but also RAIN! If you just seeded your lawn, this can mean a grass seed washout! Any fall overseed project has run into this- you put the seed down when it's sunny, only to have rain wash it away a few days later. How can you prevent this? Once it happens, how can you fix the damage? It's only a few easy steps to be aware of, and you can lessen the damage and repair what nature tries to undo in your lawn.

Spent memorial day weekend prepping and seeding a 1,000 sq ft slightly sloped yard, only to have torrential rain the next week. Did my best to rake the seeds back in place, now I have ridges of grass growing and will have to re-seed!😫 thanks for the encouragement.

A year later from your comment, D D, I did the EXACT same thing in my sloped backyard only to have the rain ridge the heck out of the seeded areas. So I'll be following Mike's recommendations.

@@progression_decibel well.. a year later I have empty patches, it’s hopeless really. So I excavated 7 feet of lower yard at roadside, mulched it, planted 4 crepe myrtle trees and lemon grass, next in goes monkey grass. That way passersby’s don’t focus on my patchy yard! Also thinking of laying artificial grass on rest of yard, so I never have to deal with it again.

We are seeding and reseeding with some kind of roll out Ez Straw where a pool once was. Yesterday I pulled up the straw blanket to see where the bare spots were. I re-seeded and tried to just use some pete moss to cover it this time. Right as I was beginning to watch your video a heavy thunderstorm came in and washed away all of my work. I had half of a large bag left so I put it down, and put the straw back after the rain from the storm dried. We'll see what happens. It's definitely a patience game. The straw does help though and if you leave it on for a long time it seems to work better. Just use stakes to tack it down. Your video was definitely helpful.. "don't get discouraged".. That helped us out a lot.

Mine washed and blew out even with EZ Straw on a flat lawn. We had wind in excess of 60mph so my neighbors got most of my straw/seed

Thank you. I'm a newbie to lawn care. I live in NY city for much of my life. I moved to CT and it's a whole different world. I'm trying my best to get my lawn going. Just did some seeding. Will let you know how it works out🙏🏾😅

What about if you're doing a complete new lawn and you have lots of puddles with seed in?

Hey Mike, I know this video is old now but wondering if once you seeded those areas if it solved your issue of puddling in your yard. I have some bare dirt spots that are collecting water similar to the picture you showed.

Hi Nick. Thanks for watching and dropping the comment! While the seed did take ultimately, it didn't resolve the puddling. This past fall I added some more top soil in those low areas which helped and got the grass to come in thicker. However, even with that it's not enough, I'm going to ultimately get a large load of dirt in and do a leveling project. Hope this helps!

So yesterday at our new build the hydroseed /final grade people showed up. I asked for this week as mid Aug-mid Sept is prime grass growing around here. They did a great job on this horrible clay dirt and got it down. I wanted to do my own seed so laid down KY Bluegrass then hand raked it all it with the back side of the rake lightly to cover. I also put down starter fertilizer. I ran out of time and never watered it in last night. This morning a scattered 'monsoon' hit and water was laying everywhere. Fortunately it was a short storm so hopefully I didn't wash out too much. The problem is the ground set up pretty hard again. I think I am going to run the tiller over everything, lightly, to get the soil loose in the next day or 2. Being that it is Bluegrass, I don't think I will hurt the germination. I just need to not bury it too deep doing this. Luckily as well as I used only half of my 50 pound bag so I can over seed as needed. Just sucks it comes up so slow I won't know if there are bare spots showing up until 2-3 weeks from now.

Use a hand cultivator not a tiller.
@mikeshomeandgarden
@mikeshomeandgarden 2 года назад
Agreed! Use a hand.cultivator or "garden Weasel" to break up the hard surfaces. A tiller is too much power for just getting the surface loose and seed to soil contact.

You think a tarp is a good idea over the bear spots when you see a thunder storm coming?
@mikeshomeandgarden
@mikeshomeandgarden 2 месяца назад
It could work. A couple things I'd keep in mind, if you already have germination the weight of the water on the tarp could damage the new grass and if the tarp is kept on too long, it could block air and light and damage it as well. But for a light storm or short duration it may have potential. I haven't personally tried it though
