I did the same thing with my Stihl FS45 trimmer and it was somewhere around $15-20 for the carburetor and it worked beautifully! What was even better was the original carburetor was non-adjustable and the replacement had both the high and low adjusting needles!

Great video! I had the exact same issue with my Mantis. I actually paid $16 off Amazon (US) for my carburetor, so I must have gotten ripped off! Lol! However, the install went great and my tiller is working just fine now, after a tiny adjustment to the "low" adjustment screw.

No brainer, give it a go and keep the original Carb just in case it all goes tits up. That was 18 Months ago, and the Stihl is still running like a champion...

Thanks for another great video! I've learned so many little things from your channel over the years. My 2 stroke Mantis 7225 has run poorly since I bought it on CL ten years ago. The guy sold it because it ran poorly for him and he was over it. I looked on Amazon and I can get a carb kit for $12.70. For that little money, it is worth replacing the carb to see if that solves my issues versus taking it in.

Fixed my neighbors push mower last summer and got the carb, hose, filter, replacement filter housing, etc.. on ebay for a hair over $20 worked just great on the mower. Sometimes OEM is just charging for the name. That OEM might be manufactured by the same company making the non OEM. Found that out when I purchased some generic batteries for an older Ryobi drill. Peeled the Ryobi sticker off the old battery and underneath was the same brand name as the two new batteries. So yeah if it works it works. I have also found that even OEM parts can be just as crappy as some generic parts nothing's ever perfect.

Usually, I just need internal parts, so I buy an Amazon carb for dirt cheap, I try it, and if it doesn't work(30% it doesn't), then I just exchange the internal parts, and I have a good working carb. It's still a lot cheaper than bying a carb kit. Plus, usually the carb is good & you still have spare parts for the carb.

Paid $15 USD for a new carb in my Echo tiller. $90 for the OEM version. I am happy to loan my tiller out because I only use it twice a year. The trick, as you surely know, is to run engeered fuel through the system between uses.

Great video Steve!! I have used Amazon for replacement carbs a couple times and they worked perfectly. I also have gotten some replacement coils ( ignition modules). I only had trouble with the ones I got for my Tecumseh. They "said" it was a replacement for the coil I had. Ended up with 3 coils. Two of them were exactly the same... wrong. didn't fit the mounts. The third one I ended up taking the coil off of the core and put it on my old core... it works... mostly. Once in a while I get a bit of a backfire. The problem is the mounting. The original had one leg of the core longer than the other. All of the new ones had the same length legs on the core and the mounting holes were too close together. The engine is a 12 hp., vertical shaft, made probably in the 90's?

I have a Troy-Built generator, 2005 model. About 3 years ago, it got to where it would hardly run. I don’t remember the brand of carb, but a kit was over $70 and an OEM carb was $120. I bought an aftermarket carb off of Amazon for just over $20. Like you said, identical, quick swap, and it ran perfectly. In fact, it was better than it ever was. It’s whole life, it took three or four pills to start. Now it’s 50/50 whether it starts on first pull, or if it will take a second. It probably won’t last as long as the OEM, but I’ll just replace it again if needed. I’ve got about 5 more changes before the $ are about even. Love your channel. Thanks for helping us all out with info/tips/entertainment!

As easy as those are to change I would have cleaned the original first. Sometimes the aftermarket carbs don't run right. I have ordered them and the bore has been larger than the original and the jets larger and they still would not run off choke. I cleaned the old carb and used the needle and bowl gaskets off the China carb and it ran perfect.

Can’t agree with you more, Steve. The Amazon knock-offs work just as well as the OEMs, for 1/5 of the cost! I have given up rebuilding carbs on all of my small engines, from string trimmers to blowers to even my zero-turn. No longer worth the time and effort. For under $20 each, I throw on a new carb every year, and they start up first pull. Amazon is a gift for any of us who work on their own small engines.

I have a Honda probably CHONDA powered craftsman push mower. Amazon Honda branded carb 19 bucks. Unfortunately, I am on my second carb in 3 seasons. Hopefully my switch to nonethanol fuel for all my small engines will resolve the failing carbs. It is common for these carbs to not tolerate old ethanol gas. The mover surges when warm. Cleaning the carb does not work 99.3854% of the time. For 19 bucks, it is worth the time saved knowing the carb will fix the problem beats the odds of removing. cleaning and reinstalling the old carb to not have it work.

Did the Amazon listing say New, Unused Condition (or however Amazon words it)? I'm wondering if maybe that one's been cleaned and rebuilt with a kit. I'm glad it worked for you. I've seen others use an inexpensive one like that with success. That one may be a Chinese clone with every detail duplicated or close enough. It also has the adjustment screw(s) and seems to look identical. I bought a Briggs OEM carb for my Craftsman tractor mower for $164 because a small part inside the original was lost when a neighbor tried to help me, but we didn't know it. That made the engine bow white smoke like crazy when the throttle speed was increased. Troubleshooting found that the lost part made the full gas tank drain into the oil because I didn't close the fuel line shutoff valve, but I would have found out soon enough anyway. Without that lost part and knowing what it looks like to figure out where it goes back, I wouldn't know which one goes where from a rebuild kit. Briggs is horrible about no exploded views with lines pointing to part placements, so I had no help. I learned this new OEM part is an upgrade listed in the Parts Manual because the original Nikki had issues, so I got an updated carb. There are so many cheap copycat clones out there that I would not trust the ~$20 ones and I didn't know this was an OEM replacement until I had it verified my local small engine repair shop to know that it was a correct replacement, because the butterfly closure is very different. That's why I questioned it, plus some other things are different, but actually better. I learned the hard way that carbs are taken apart and worked on over a benchtop or work table, and that there IS a proper way to take them apart to keep parts from falling out. Lesson learned for all future carb work. The compression was 30 psi low, so I lapped the valves while I was at it. It starts fast and purrs like a kitten now. Thanks for everything you (and April) do for us, Steve. You're the man!

"Tastes like good gas too..." You sir *WIN* the internet today! (Out of curiosity - does the higher octane stuff taste sweeter? How about with ethanol? Lol). GREAT video - HUGE help to me!

I've had one dud carb from about 5 or 6 I've bought. Bit of a pain as I've got to wait a while for another one but the saving is immense. Yeah the originals are probably better but I fail to see where!

Steve, just this morning I priced the left-hand thread, nyloc nut to hold the cutting blade on my old FS 55 because I mis-placed one.. again. :( The Stihl shop wanted 7.99 CDN for one! I came home and ordered a pack of 5 from Spamazon for 9.00! Now I'll have spares and won't feel ripped off. I've been putting on new carbs on small engines for a few years. Much cheaper than originals and why deal with an old, worn, gummed up one when for $22-ish I can get the carb, fuel filter, air filter and a plug (and sometimes even more in the kit). I have never had to adjust them. Toss them on like you did and done. I like to buy local when I can but I also like to have enough money for bills and food too. ;) Strange times we live in. BTW.. the FS 55 is about 22 years old and still does it's job well. Love the channel. Joe, on the opposite coast.

U DA Man ! Great Vid ! Wish I could get a cheap one and repair it, like U did . Is that a Mantis model #7924 2 stroke tiller ? I plan renting one from HD, for 0.088 of an acre. If it bogs or stalls, I need to know whats wrong. In order to cut down, On the return and time credit, debate(s). With HD !

Hello steve.....how are you?.......I'm a huge fan of yours I watched all of your videos......I need your advice on a 2 stroke carburetor.....when changing the metering diaphragm......the tiny hole on the carburetor must be with the tiny hole on the metering diaphagm......but the gasket goes first on the carburetor and then the metering diaphragm goes on top of the gasket.....aren't the gasket going to block the tiny hole on the carburetor?

As a small engine mechanic of 40 years,I have bought hundreds of Amazon carbs and find it's hit and miss.Majority are good but also had defective ones. But the price is right.

My mistake was to fiddle with the adjusting screws - tried to set them as on the original one and this screwed up the fuel ratio, so the engine doesn't start, or bogs down or surges like crazy. My mistake. I guess I need to buy another one and to leave the adjustment screws as they are. :) The replacing of the carburetor was easy - just two screws were holding it.

Have a Honda GX35 on a small canoe motor. I’m in Colorado at 5280+ in elevation. Curious if I could use adjuster screws on carb to adapt to altitude or if I need to re jet it? Have a video on how to re jet these?

I needed a carb for a BS 10hp. BS wanted over $100 for the carb. Chyna mart had , carb, spark plug, fuel filter, all the gaskets, heat shield as a kit. Oh and air filter for ...$25. Briggs better do something, cause I hate not buying USA products.😳

I have used a few of these knockoff carbs 6+ years ago and still working fine after the oem one broke after 2 years When the cheap carb is 1/3 the price of an oem rebuild kit it makes sence just to buy the carb

Steve,I service multiple mantis tillers, i buy the chinese copies 6 at a time, they 99.9% work fine, whether on a mantis or elsewhere on other machines. The only silly problem is when you buy a carb which comes as a kit with grommet, fuel pipe air filter and tank breather, i have found that some of the tank breathers leak fuel so i have to use better quality breathers other than that it begs the question "what is the real difference between OEM and a supposed copy, are they actually from the same factory???.
