Do you need to learn how to fix a large hole in the wall? Maybe someone decided to place Mike Tyson's Punchout with your drywall?
We've got you covered. This video will walk you through step-by-step how to fix a hole that's bigger than 6x6 inches. And in the end nobody will notice there was a hole.
The first step is to access the situation and measure the hole where it's the largest. Some areas of the hole might be smaller than others and that's why you what to figure out the largest dimension, both length and width.
Take these measurements and transpose them on a new piece of drywall. Cut that piece to size and place it over the hole. Trace the outline of the new piece on the wall and cut along the marks with a drywall saw.
You might want to make the new hole be slightly bigger than than old one, like 1/8 of an inch. This way the new drywall piece will fit perfectly.
I prefer mixing up setting-type joint compound because it can dry faster than pre-mixed joint compound. Apply a 6 inch wide by 3/16 thick layer of joint compound over the horizontal butt joint between the old drywall and new piece. Then embed paper tape on that joint and smooth it out.
In the video I'll give you specific instructions on how to do all this.

Thank you so much for this video. I got all psyched up to do this but had second thoughts and decided to see what youtube had to offer. This was the best video I watched about this process. Craftsman video didn't have anything on you. They didn't even finish the most important part of the whole process... mudding it, and God forbid they show mistakes, which we all make. Your honesty in your mistakes makes this video perfect for the do it yourselfer. Thanks again. I feel confident now that I can do this!

Im glad you used paper-tape rather than the mesh, though you overlapped it, which will be harder to hide. Meaning you needed to do too many coats. You got the job done though.

probably would have been easier to remove the dry wall first before installing the bracing, but i did learn something, i keep trying to make the first round of joint compound application perfect. Takes a few rounds before that happens. Thanks
@HomeRepairTutor
@HomeRepairTutor 9 лет назад
Thanks Youbones, I was trying to keep the new hole as small as possible by installing the bracing first but either way would be good. I know what you mean by trying to make the first round perfect. That way you won't have much sanding if any.

Is the paper tape really necessary? Why can't I just do multiple coats of joint compound to smooth it out? just asking.
@HomeRepairTutor
@HomeRepairTutor 9 лет назад
Orville Love good question, the paper tape prevents the seam from cracking over time. If you don't use paper or mesh tape the joint compound will crack and you'll be doing it over again. Do it once and be done :D

First let me say over all very good video and thanks for providing the knowledge you have for free to help others. You narrate the video very nicely. However I did see some things that where just not needed that took up a lot of extra time. I was confused though if you made the whole because you needed to add blocking due to installing a pedestal sink? I have never seen one that would require blocking. But if for some reason that was the case then my next comments are not appropriate. If you did not need the blocking to install something then the comment is appropriate. So don’t think I’m being ugly at all. You did not need any blocking you wasted a lot of time. You just take and make a straight cut on the center of stud left and right of the opening then put your new filler piece up and mark the top and bottom and cut out. Screw into the studs just like when it was originally installed. If it was a whole with no studs close then you could use two small blocks even a paint stir stick would work place in the wall and screw just above the opening on both sides top and bottom to hold the wood then put in your filler piece and screw that to the sticks and mud.

Hmmm.... is there a difference between sheet rock and drywall? My apartment... the walls are hard. Harder then drywall. I tried putting some pictures up by tacks. Anyways, the walls are really hard. It's a old building too.
@arcadegeek
@arcadegeek 6 лет назад
Sheet rock/drywall are the same thing. If your building is really old and the wall is hard like cement then it's possible your walls are plaster. You have to use special screws/hangers for plaster - do not nail right into them!
@pshep123
@pshep123 3 года назад
Almost definitely lath and plaster. There are a lot of good adhesive options to hang pictures these days, try that route.

Great video....but thats a lot of work and time to wait ...and then you have to paint over it...such a long process for just simple hole. Makes you think that there definitely has to be a better building material in general. Drywall just seems like a pain. And I would say for me anyway - this is one of those things I would outsource...even though I like to DIY. Is it just me that feels this way?
