A great video, thanks! The carburetor jet on my Briggs and Stratton lawn mower engine was indeed clogged as you described. The mower was my "spare" that I had not used in two years. I unscrewed the bowl, cleaned (blew it out with compressed air and sprayed it with carb cleaner), reassembled and test run all in about 10 minutes at no cost. Actually, the spare now runs better than the principle mower. Maybe I'll clean the jet of the principle mower next.
This worked amazingly well, mower runs like new now! Very simple procedure. One tip is to wear latex gloves when taking out the screw, and put an old rag under the bowl, to avoid getting gas all over your hands and on the mower. (Even though the fuel line is crimped and closed, the remaining gas in the bowl comes out when the screw is loosened and removed.) Thank you so much!
just finished the job....at first I was disappointed but then have numerous tries I remembered that I disengaged the spark plug (safety first)....put the cap back on the plug and away she went.... very helpful Derek
Same problem. I had already bought, spark plug, air filter, new fuel line hose, and still it wouldn't stay running. Well after 2 weekends of trying to get mine started, I saw your video and said what the heck. I followed your directions and BAM it started on the 2nd pull and never stopped. Thank you sir!
You are a lifesaver, money saver for us! My husband had been out in yard for approx 2 hrs trying to start our lawnmower. He made several trips to hardware store to no avail! Finally I (the smart wife) went out and told him let’s look on UTube and tried your video.Walla followed your instructions and had that mower running in no time! Thank you!
Thanks Derek for the easy fix. Amazing how it's the simple things in life that count. I'm not all that mechanically inclined, but you probably saved me at least $100 for a service call with your great directions!!!
Just wanted to say thank you, my mower had the same issue.Your tip worked well, i had a little petrol in the tank so i didnt crimp the fuel line. Opening the carb bulb and moving the float up and down while the fuel trickled out helped get all the dirt out. Once i had done this it started on first pull. Much appreciated 👍
Thank you Sir, it took me less than half an hour and voila, my mower runs like new again. I had gave up after more than an hour tried to clean the spark plug, air filter and sprayed the carburetor with no success then decided to check on RU-vid videos and found yours.
Mine just started doing this! Ivreplaced carb last year and it had been running great. Not sure I knew about this issue, but will check it this morning and hopefully have success. Was planning on taking it apart today and this may save me a lot of time!!! You are, absolutely right, homeowners need to be able to do some of these repairs. Great video that got right to the issue!
So.e thing So Simply Stupid that stops the motor from running, I cleaned this carb multiple times and still no worky, I didn't see this even being a possibility because it was viewed as the fastener that hold the fuel bowl on, never gave it a thought that its actually the carb jet. So simple, so stupid, cleaned the fastener/Jet and suddenly the motor runs. Thanks so Much, this is a value video, thanks for taking the time to post it. I Appreciate you.
You know i have been driving myself nuts thinking the float valve was the culprit for my obvious fuel problem forgetting completely the feed for the main jet, thanks for the tip, going to check this out 👍
Thank you so much for doing this video! I was able to get my lawn mower running after watching this. I was about to take it to a repair place but I don't need to now. My lawn mower was running fine until I changed the oil, then it would stall out. I think it was from tipping it on its side which may have stirred up debris in the gas tank.
Thank you so much for the video. The scenario you made was exactly what was happening to my lawn mower. Thank you so much. I learned something new. Now, I don't have to go buy a new one, at least not anytime soon. I appreciate the help. 🙂
You just saved me a ton of time and grief! I am NOT mechanical AT ALL, and my mower was doing the stop/start thing as described here. I took off the bowl (which had some weird gunk in it) and ended up draining all the gas just to be safe. The thing runs like a top now! Thank you so much for this video! WHEW!
Cleaning that bowl sound gave me the same reaction to hearing fingernails on a chalk board, other than that can't wait to give it a shot, thanks for the video👍
Thanks for the video. Cleaned out the nut and changed the air filter and gas, but it still won't start. Apparently I'll have to take the bowl off too. I was hoping not to have to do that, but I'm not paying a $100 for someone else to do that.
Thanks for the help! I followed your fix yesterday and got my mower going... I did a quick video of my repair as well, gave you a shout out and linked your channel- Cheers from Ottawa! Sub here!
Thanks, that was the last thing to try before replacing the carb or taking my mower in for service. I did spark plug, air filter, cleaned the carb as well. I knew it was a fuel starve issue. I admit a little pride in fixing myself besides saving money. Service was going to be $200 and about 2 weeks in shop on backlog.
I have the same problem today. Have spent a couple of hours faffing around trying to troubleshoot. Ill check this out and report back if i can get it resolved this way.
i just cleaned my carb after sitting all winter, mower ran fine for 3 weeks then this happened! after checking everything removing the fuel pot was the last thing i did, mine doesn't have the wee holes but draining and refilling did the trick..next time i'm going here first!! 🤣 happy mowing
Thank you!! I was surprised that the carb bowl & nut was pretty clean but this did fix the problem. I wonder too if the gas that came out had water mixed in with it & maybe clearing that out helped too??
Just fixed a Koehler that would start and then die , had to drill out the plastic idle jet . That's the black jet that you can take it out and tried some jet cleaners and it was just plugged up . So I used a micro drill but -and it did the trick . Good video !
I had this problem and it ended up being a non-functional primer bulb. Mice ate it away and I thought I could run it without it. Wrong. Thanks for posting!
My wife and I just washed the underside of the lawn mower and it seems to have worked so far. We may have had a lot of grass build up not allowing it to want to run
love your video!!! This question is for my pushing mower, I feel like I did everything, cleaning the carburetor and fuel line , clean up the fuel tank cap et al, my Craftsman/Honda is still starting and dies 15 seconds later, what is the problem?
I've got a Toro recycler with this problem. If I hold down the prime button it will stay running but shortly after I let it off it dies. any suggestions ?
SIMPLEST FIX: No need to remove carburetor, just put carburetor cleaner in the tank. Details below. My mower sat for 18 months with 1/2 full tank (does have fuel stabilizer in it). Symptoms were same as yours except my motor wouldn't start at all until I got some starting fluid. My fix was to top off the tank with fresh fuel and add "Fuel Injector & Carburetor Cleaner" from Walmart (Supertech, 6oz treats 21 gallons). I estimate I used about 3-4 times more than you're supposed to. After adding the carb cleaner, I started the motor several times with starting fluid but no improvement. I let it sit for 24 hours and the next day, with the help of some starting fluid (ether), it cranked up and ran without stopping. I did manually push the throttle open to get the rpms up until it got warm. You may not be so lucky, but its worth a try. I have a Briggs&Stratton 500E.
@@Luckime313 Well that is GREAT to hear! As it turns out, I have a SECOND lawn mower that also would NOT start after sitting. This time it was not so easy. I tried the "Carb Cleaner in the old fuel" trick for several days. I ended up having to lean the mower over and dump out the old fuel completely. With a completely empty tank, I put in the Walmart Carb Cleaner and FRESH FUEL JUST PURCHASED into the tank. Again, I had to let it sit over night, but with the help of the Starting Fluid (Ether) and pushing the red primer button a bunch of times, I got it going. That's TWO times I fixed this problem without removing the Carburetor. Yours makes THREE. So I highly recommend everyone try this before taking the thing apart (I would buy a new mower before I took it apart, and taking to a shop costs almost as much as a new mower).
I. Had a issue with my Mountfield no gas problem was the brake lever on the handle being slightly bent so make sure it working correctly mine was missing firing found this fault last minute well happy
Cheers big sandwiches 🥪 You made my day. Very plastic bag in the wind type of thing if you know what ya neighbor means mate. Couldn't tell you how many frames I've been in without knowing about it! But Couldn't of done it without the peg on the line making big cheese . If you know what I mean
It still took 4 pulls to start......I would have gone further and cleaned the carb. The engine should start on the first or second pull if conditions are normal........
Dan Woelke and was a little rough start too. Maybe he didn’t give it time for the bowl to get good supply of fuel in it. That being said, I thought I hear a surge. Maybe it leveled out. Think might at least run a little Sea Foam in it.
If you have the Briggs with the plastic carburetor you may need to do a rebuild with the appropriate kit. It's not hard to do but finding the kit itself can be a pain. Using fuel with ethanol additives is the enemy of most modern mowers. Remembering to run all of the gas out of the tank between uses helps to avoid carburetor issues but it is still no guarantee. Using canned fuel without ethanol is your best bet.
