Good advice clearly explained. The Vaseline/Silicon grease tip was a real gem. Some people lather the joints in mastic or silicon sealant, but that will usually leak after a few weeks. Replacement rubber seals are the best option.

Thanks for your comment, I agree that if you can get the rubber seals, that's definitely the best option

Just done mine before seeing this video Some good advice. The new joint was £3.99 which is excellent value for money. Attaching the rear part of the bracket was the hardest part. I put it in sideways then turn it around which helped . I also put in a little sealant membrane on the joint inside as I noticed the gutter had warped a little and wasn’t very flush . Everything become easy …. Once you have had the experience

Don't use vaseline or any petroleum product as a lubricant with rubber - it will gradually eat away at the rubber. Use silicone grease instead.
@akaWooders
@akaWooders 4 месяца назад
Anyone who's read the instructions for using a condom would know that. 😆
@akaWooders

However, I wouldn't recommend getting out the silicone grease when using a condom either, you might get a negative reaction in more ways than one! Other lubricants are available for that 'job'. 😉

Thanks for your comment. Have you checked to see if there are any manufacturers details printed on it? I managed to get some unusual fittings via a google search but ended paying a lot more than standard guttering. Have you tried just replacing the seals if that's an option?
@Listermintsluesh
@Listermintsluesh Год назад
@@FixitwithFowler thanks. Yes I've modified lower guttering, so I can reuse the original part for the top guttering that's broke. It's all terrain stuff I believe. It's those little clips that clamp the fittings together. Unusual design but they lasted a long long time. Yeah I can see if I can't replace those seals. 🙏👋🤞

Hi Steve, I'm having a spot of bother with water flowing on my guttering. I have a return around the side of the guttering similar to yours. At 1min 10 on your video, its a great shot as it looks the same as mine. However, I thought this may have been an incorrect fitting, as I can't see how the water would drop onto the corner bracket and then get over the lip of the next piece of guttering. (I have absolutely no idea about guttering, so was just assuming this could be the problem - looking at your set up, it might not be, it might just be due to the lack of fall on the guttering). I would have thought some fancy bit of mitring was required, so the two pieces butted up against each other in the right angle bracket ?. If not, I think I need to have a look at the fall on the brackets. Thanks Barry
@FixitwithFowler
@FixitwithFowler Год назад
Hi Barry, the guttering does not mitre in the corner. Instead, the guttering is cut square and stops in the corner joint at the stop line in the gutter joint. The water does sit a little in the joint but only about 2-3 mm, so long as the seals are ok, then this is not a problem. You could check that you have a fall on the guttering as this will help the water to drain away!
@bozwellboyce8364

@@FixitwithFowler Thanks Steve, I think it's definitely the fall on the guttering which is the problem. Glad I spotted your video.

The reason why we get so much trouble with plastic gutters. Is because they are poorly made and the rubber gaskets are also very poor.

@Blade1310

The video was going so well until it missed out the vital part of getting the clips on the back side . Clearly a problematic area which probably entailed several attempts and copious amounts of strong language! I only comment as mine has exactly this problem (dripping rather than running though) and I can foresee the clips snapping at some point as they are currently refusing to budge when trying to remove them! 😂
@FixitwithFowler
@FixitwithFowler Год назад
If you look at about 5.40, it shows how to install the clips. However, they are a nightmare, and if the weather is cold, the guttering clips and guttering are less flexible and the guttering clips can break!
