I sealed my sunroof shut about a year back, but felt like a total chump for doing it. Scotty, you've made me feel a lot less like a chump, and for that I thank you.

Instead of a stiff wire, just use the plastic wire you use on grass trimmers and feed it all the way through to the bottom where it exits inside the fender. Problem with using compressed air is that you can easily unplug the tube from the nipple right at the sunroof, then your sunroof will leak always.

I love my sunroof. It's 19 years old, and I never ever bothered with it. And it still doesn't leak. Although it has seen -15°F (-25°C) in winter and +105°F (+40°C) in the summer. I rather have a sunroof, than an AC. Girls dig it too, when you can see the stars above at night. :)

About 5 years ago I bought a used car with broken gears on the sunroof and it wouldn't stay shut all the way. I couldn't get parts for it so I grabbed my caulk gun and totally sealed it with clear silicone. It never leaked again.

you clean out the drain holes as I showed. WD 40 does work great. and if the drive system breaks you have to tear the whole sun roof off, a royal pain.

Scotty Kilmer. Sunroofs should last the life of the car , especially if you don't constantly use it everyday. ( wear and tear will be minimal ) I barely use mine , but i know it will work when I want to use it because of that fact. Good video keep them coming.

yea, close it like in this video and seal it so it doesn't leak. To fix it, you will have to take the whole run roof assembly and roof apart to fix the broken track assembly, and they aren't cheap to buy either.

yes, there are tons of lubricants. I use WD 40 cause it cleans crap off good and they get a lot of crap on sun roofs. If future problems exist, I then use it again and then spray with waterproof silicone lube

Got two quotes to clear it. $125-180 from dealership. $150 from local mechanic. Went to Michael's crafts bought a 6 meter length of stiff brass jewelery (choker) wire for $4.00 and snaked it through in 15 mins. No leaks inside after heavy rain but she's clogged up way down the line. Thought about adding a little liquid drano and then push it through but don't want to get all messy with chemicals. Thoughts?

I love P.B. (Penetrating Blast) it is a lubricant that works it's way up into things, it does NOT evaporate, it is also a rust inhibitor meaning it helps eat up rust. I've used it for years working on cars and tractors, and I've gotten some bolts off that I thought I was going to snap the heads off. Try it out, you can get it for about 4-5 bucks a can or so at your auto parts place. It's worth the buy!

Jake McCoy is right but I am going to add this Because WD40 CAN be used as a lubricant but it sucks at it. You even ceded that. ( did not contradict myself.
@CT_Taylor
@CT_Taylor 8 лет назад
Jake McCoy is right but I am going to add this Im not a guy. Your saliva CAN be a lubricant, but it would require a lot of reapplication. That is why you use specialty WD40 or find some other brand of lubricants. However, on some things that dont necessarily need lubrication, WD40 regular can be good because sometimes junk will clog it but WD40 will free it up.

The seals do not seal perfectly, that's why there are drains. And on older sun roofs, the rails often warp and a new seal does no good at all cause the roof is somewhat cockeyed.

I found a way to clean the drains for the sun roofs. My wife has a 2007 Saturn Outlook. This thing always has a problem. I found using some ice maker plastic tubing and a Mayo squeeze bottle. You can buy tbd for under a dollar. first I feed the tubing in until I stop or I have about 5 inches left. Shoot some compressed air in the tubing. The area where the drain is tight so it is easier to work with if you have the extra hanging out. After the air I fill the squeeze bottle in the tubing.

@raulswain2458
@raulswain2458 11 лет назад
Michael, what you describe sounds like the over head control panel no longer sees the hall sensor in the sunroof motor. Many Merc motors now support memory functions for one touch close/open. Its not documented in the service manual, but the controllers will cut power to the motor after half a second with no hall sensor signal. When the sunroof is not initialized they usually work like a non-memory sunroof.

I found on my car that the leak was through the pop rivets at the front, some had sealant in them but one didnt and water dripped in through it, but also its a good idea to take off the A pillar trim and see where the drain pipes exit, usually around the bulkhead because leaves can sit there and clog up the drains.

I plan on putting sealent tape on mine. Never owned a car with a sunroof before, but recent vehicle issues and a lack of money pushed me for getting one with a sunroof. And when my husband put the water hose on the car and I seen a steady drip going down and into the tray of the sunroof. My OCD had kicked in. I live in Louisiana and we get BAD hurricanes during hurricane season. Then I'm worried bout the motor giving out when it's opened. Told my husband we can just seal the thing and use it as a moon roof, problem solved!

@VolvoBug
@VolvoBug 9 лет назад
Absolutely. Don't force compressed air in the drain holes, it will do exactly what you say and disconnect them. Then water just drains into your frame or interior. Much better luck with gently pouring hot water down the drain holes, it will clear most clogs.

I did some research, and a few sources actually suggested that the sunroof might need to be reprogrammed after the battery is replaced. He did have the battery replaced back in 2011 when the alternator went, so maybe I'll give that a shot. If it's any more complex then a switch or fuse, or even programming then I will just leave it alone.

Most sunroof issues (if mechanically) caused by the misaligned rack/pinion or wire rails. Both left and right runners must be in sync and move equally. Otherwise the entire system will halt. This problem happens when the main gear pops out of its seat due to vibration or wear/or an obstacle stopped the sunroof while in sliding. Just an FYI.

either method can blow off the drain tube off the drain spout which will then let the water right on your headliner/interior. test after either method and be prepared to pull down the headliner corner to reattach the drain tube. there are 4, 1 in each corner.

Maybe spring for some silicon spray, maybe even silicone paste. Even if WD doesn't eat rubber it's more of a cleaner than a lubricant and will quickly wash away. Not to mention the smell. Silicone is water resistant and silicone paste/grease is likely what the manufacturer used. Silicone is also low odor, very little smell once the solvent evaporates which is less than a minute most of the time. The past has even less smell.

Sunroof leaks are a common problem on Volvos. You have to take the pillar covers off from the front left and right and clean out the tubes. Also make sure the tube has not dislodged its connection at the bottom of the tube or the water will drain inside the cabin of the car every time it rains. Sometimes you also have to take it to the dealer so they can calibrate the sun roof it fails to open or close properly. Sometimes I think Scotty's silicone sealing idea has merit.
