Fixing the speedometer on my Honda S2000, which as you can see clearly reads too high. While traveling at a GPS verified speed of about 80 to 81 miles per hour, you can see the car’s speedometer is reading 87 miles per hour, significantly higher than the actual speed. This is a result of changing the final drive gearing in my S2000, but you could also have a speedometer reading incorrectly from putting on different tires or wheel sizes. To correct this, first you need to know how much your speedometer is off by. You want to travel at the highest legal speed you can near you, so that you can have an accurate percentage difference. In my case, driving at about 81 miles per hour shows a speed of 87 mph, so my car is reading about 7.4% high.
Next I’ve purchased a Yellow Box correction kit. These can be used for many different makes and models of vehicles, simply splicing into the speed signal wire, or by using a plug and play kit they provide, also available for many different brands. The first thing we need to do for the install is lift the front of the car up onto jack stands. The speed sensor for the speedometer is on the transmission for the S2000, so we’ll need access to it. Once underneath the car, unplug the sensor from the transmission, and plug in the new harness. There will be plenty of wire length for the Yellow Box to plug in, so at this point I pulled the connector out from under the vehicle to program it. Then plug in the Yellow Box.
Turn your ignition to accessory mode, and you should see some lights flashing on the Yellow Box. Once powered, the box will tell you what the current correction factor is, by flashing the red light. Short flashes represent a count of one each, and long flashes represent zero. In this case we have 1 flash, then four long flashes, meaning 1 0 0 0 0, or 100.00% correction factor.
My S2000 is reading about 7.4% high, so we want a correction factor of 107.40%. To program the box, hold both buttons for about 5 seconds, until both green and red lights flash. Now, by pressing the plus button, the correction factor will go up by 0.1 percent. Pressing the plus button 74 times will give us our 107.4% correction factor. You can also hold the button to speed this up.
After you’ve programmed it, wait for both lights to flash. This informs you the setting has been saved. Turn the car ignition off, and then turn it back on to check that the setting is correct. Once powered, the device automatically reads the current setting to you.
I’m simply choosing to zip-tie the Yellow Box for now, directly beside the transmission housing. The device comes with a 10 year warranty and is weatherproof, heatproof, and vibration proof, but make sure you don’t place it near your exhaust or extreme heat sources. With the device in place, it’s time for a test drive. As you can see the car now reads much closer to the actual speed, and is reading just slightly conservatively high, which I’m fine with. You could choose to fine tune at this point if you prefer.

Thank you for following through on this. Good idea to use the GPS instead of doing the math on the old and new final drive ratios as that would have caused you to retain any built in OEM based speedometer error. For now you know your speedometer reads just slightly high at 80 MPH - should help you stay out of trouble. Great video, thanks again.

I don't know why it costs that much, but if it had a GUI it would be far more expensive. Hell at that point seems like it would make more sense to just make a phone app and an adapter for the phone. Actually that seems like a pretty good idea now that I think about it.

I prefer the plug into the OBD2 port and change the setting in the computer method. Might be worth a call to your local automotive shop as many of the common Snap On scan tools can make adjustments for tire size in the computer. Depends on the vehicle though. I know the Chrysler OE scan tool also has a similar adjustment capability.

Quite different than the way I corrected my speedometer on my 65 Mustang after I installed 4:11 gears. I had to drive a measured mile and note how much mileage went on the odometer. There was a formula (don't remember what it was) used to determine which speedo gear to use to replace the stock one on the cable. Changing the gear to a different number of teeth brought the speedo down to a more accurate reading.

so does this mean when I put it to 200% then the speedometer shows only half of the speed. like 50kmh instead of 100kmh. And does this mean the km only counts half? So when I travel 100km my car shows 50km?

Yes and no. your speedo will read your modification correctly, but depending on the make and age of the car, the odometer will likely record distance separately so as to prevent scamming the ownership and usage history.

LoL you should came to Poland. In Germany 5 year old BMW would have 150 000 km, but when the same BMW will ride (on tow truck) to Poland then the mileage will 'magically' drop to 40 000 km. We have 17 year old vehicles imported from Germany with the course of 150 000 - 200 000 km :D
@RWoody1995
@RWoody1995 7 лет назад
does this mean that if you fit a different ratio differential and adjust the speed this way, since the ecu gets a separate reading the ecu will still be getting the incorrect speed for the odometer and you end up with 7% higher indicated mileage? :o

Curious how this impacts the odometer. I'm always paranoid that with my car's speedometer reading high that the odometer is reading artificially high too. Makes a big difference for somebody leasing that needs to stick to a mileage cap.
@Engineer9736
@Engineer9736 2 года назад
That concern was popping up in my mind as well. I personally don't mind the odometer going up faster, but maybe the government sees it as tampering if they find out during the yearly checkup. If someone sets the correction to 1% then the odo meter wouldn't turn anymore (Extreme example).

Did you check the speed at the PCM? Sometimes the clusters are programmed to show the speed a bit fast, as is the case on my Golf. The PCM sees the speed exactly correct, yet my speedo reads about 3-5 km/h fast. Also, usually using some software, you should be able to change it in the cluster without a hacky piece of hardware in-between.

The more you know: It is illegal in Germany for a speedometer to display too low speed, but it *is* allowed for it to show up to 10 % (+ an additional 4 km/h) too much so that in the worst case you're never driving too fast. So "correcting" it down might actually be illegal if you overdo it as tire pressure on warmer/colder days can invalidate your measurement. My car can supposedly only do 183 km/h, but I easily got it to "200" ;-)

factory does that for a number of reasons: it does give to the driver one unrealistic "feel" that the car is faster, acelleration is better because it hit the target early and also the fuel economy seems to be higher as you cover extra miles for your gallon, legally they can be up to 10 % off to up but not for down, so they do that to be in the safe side

What to do when a speedometer shows different misreadings depanding on speed? I.e. When I drive 50 km/h according to GPS, my speedometer shows around 56-57km/h, and this 5-7km/h stays the same from 30 to 140km/h, when I reach 160km/h, the measurement is spot on with GPS - straight up to 220km/h(max speed).

What about for speedometers that lag? So like from 0-60 my speedometer doesn't move from zero till I'm actually at like 5-10 mph

Can't you calibrate it via obd? Will I lose the setttings if I do that? I have a VW jetta mk4.

Hi, I think my problem is a bit different. When I connect with my OBD-2 reader in my 2008 Ford BF the speed is accurate, but my dial is still ~5 kmh over

not sure if mentioned in comments already.... a lot of modern cars don't have gearbox speed sensors. they get the speed info off the abs sensors. some use the gearbox speed sensor as a back up should the abs system fail. something to check before fitting any adjustment box.

Could this little device be used (nefariously) to slow down the odometer reading? In other words, it allows the odometer to read fewer miles thereby lying about the car's mileage history..???
@MicraHakkinen
@MicraHakkinen 7 лет назад
That's all well and good, however bear in mind that virtually all speedometers have a built-in deviation. In my car I can read out the speed via OBD-II and it will match up exactly with the GPS (+/- 1 km/h). However the actual display is always reading 10% higher. If I were to fit a yellow box in my car to fix the speedo's deviation, I'd be throwing off the ECU, speed-dependent power steering and most importantly the mileage by 10%. That would for example make me about 13k km / 8k mi late for my timing belt service interval. So personally I'd set this yellow box to only compensate for what's changed (gearing or tire circumference), maintaining the factory default deviation on the speedometer.

I changed all the gauge screens in my car and I guess I didn’t put the needles in the correct places. It marks my temp, fuel, oil and turbo but not my rpm or speed. Will this fix it ?
@pauljs75
@pauljs75 7 лет назад
Some makes and models don't need a middleman device, with those it's possible to flash that adjustment factor to the ECU. I'm surprised Honda didn't have such a setup with this car.

Hi! Was your speedometer falling up and down as well? I took it to the shop and the guy connected it to my vehicle as I'm driving it. He said my speed wasn't matching his tablet scan that was connected to my vehicle to read what was wrong with my vehicle. They replaced the sensors on my transmission.but my idle still drops as I'm driving. Do you know if I could use a yellow box to fix the issue?

My check engine light will triggers every time I hit a certain speed at certain RPM, mostly around 3000RPM or 120km/h. The error code says that the speed and RPM readings are out of range and not plausible. I'm guessing that using a slightly smaller tire is the cause. Will try changing back to bigger tires to see if it fixes the problem.

how does it effect lower speeds? my speedo shows +/- 2kmh up to 60kmh but at 120 gps speed I have the speedo at 130kmh
@SuperAWaC
@SuperAWaC 7 лет назад
gps is less accurate the faster you're going, because it's interpolating your speed. that's why it's not safe to use gps as a speedometer

SuperAWaC this is true for traveling around curves but a straight line will still be accurate

Why did you say that changing the final drive ratio (rear differential) is the result of the over reading speedo?
@usergiodmsilva1983PT
@usergiodmsilva1983PT 7 лет назад
Hi Jason, as you mentioned, the speedo can read incorrectly when different tyres or wheel sizes are used, instead of the original measures. This leads to my question, if my Wheel size is 17R205/45, and proceed to change the tyres to 17R205/50, what will happen? I get that the top speed will go up because it is like putting a higher gearing and that the speedo will read slower by about 5% if I'm not mistaken, but what about accelaration? Will it be faster, slower, and will it be because the tyre is heavier or is here anything more at play? Thanks and great work!

This website will accurately (assuming you know your actual speedometer reading) measure the speed differential when changed your tires and wheels setup: www.willtheyfit.com/ Using the info you gave me and the website, your vehicle speed reading will be lower with the 50 sidewall by -3.22%.

Yeah I usually use tiresize.com/tyre-size-calculator/ for that, but what I want to know is the actual acceleration 0-100Km/h (the topspeed I can calculate myself I think)
@SI0AX
@SI0AX 7 лет назад
Hmm, I don't know about that, but you can check out this other cool website that has similar info to what you're looking for: www.enormouslysideways.net/calc.html You need to know your transmission setup. Check out the gear ratios for you're specific vehicle.

1) my speedometer shows 65 at real 60 km/h and 104 at real 100 km/h, so it's non-linear error, no way to correct by yellow box. 2) how about mismatch between speedometer reading from gearbox and speed signals from ABS sensors? can it lead to strange effects?
@captaintimcurry1713

I've always wondered which is more accurate. I have an old school style needle speedometer and it seems to read 2 or 3 mph slower than what my phone app says and I don't know which one is more correct

well I'm in a predicament.... My analog speedo reads 100kmph, the digital speedo reads 96kmph (yes there is both an analog speedo and a digital one that I can scroll through to on the dash) and my phone's gps speedo then reads ~90kmph...... wtf do I do, is the analog signal from the transmission, and the digital signal from the abs system I'm assuming? Tires are factory size but the front tires are worn and the rear tires are brand new, could that have something to do with the different readings on the analog and digital readings? pls help, thought I have been doing 120 on the dot on highways but I've really been doing like 110 and when im going 130 im really going like 123kmph....
