I have a question. With the power steering leakage, would the liquid you put in fix a tubing leak as well?
@Martin-kn6vc
@Martin-kn6vc 3 года назад
Thank you so much for this video! I had an advisory on my Ford Focus C-Max during its service stating that my power steering rack was leaking. Took my car back to the same garage for its MOT in December, and the leak wasn't flagged up. I drove it away, and within a week my power steering fluid was leaking all its fluid within one journey. With my own research (mainly through this video), I saw the leak was coming from somewhere inside the engine (the oil pressure switch). Bought the replacement oil pressure switch from Amazon for about £20, tried fitting it myself, but didn't have the tools to get to it properly (I would've had to remove the alternator, which is a griefy job for a complete novice like me). Took it to a more reputable garage, and they fitted the part in no time, and it's solved the problem! One thing to mention is I would disconnect the battery before removing the switch, as I had a fright when I dropped a ratchet when I tried working on it myself and created some sparks. Luckily I didn't blow a fuse or damage anything.

Good video , simple clear information , thanks. Just one question Chris, would you not have needed to bleed the system ? I imagine that due to the leak being from the sensor the amount of air getting in was small as opposed to when a hose develops a leak
@UchihaDasuke

The mechanics might have been able to make a better diagnosis had they been left your keys and had the advantage you gave yourself in running the engine to observe things in motion. Perhaps they'd then have sorted it out for you for a more representative cost.

Exactly the same problem it could look like there's a leak from the parts below like the gaitor or it's connections. This helped draw my attention to the pressure switch and the problem as no leaks from elsewhere when cleaned and engine run. Thanks!!

WW2 😂😂😂 It's a 1999 Ford Focus and it has spent its life in a wet and windy seaside town in the North West of England so yes it's a wee bit rusty here and there. It's a great little car though and as I only paid 800 USD for it 5 years ago I have no complaints at all!

@christopher_barr
@christopher_barr 7 лет назад
I refer to USD in my videos as over 80% of views on my videos come from outside the UK. I paid £650 for the car - which you and I understand very well, but which means very little to many people overseas. By referring to USD, everyone understands the amount I am referring to wherever they live in the world (especially in the USA - where most of my video views come from).

OMG i have the same problem, i was searching and searching for the leak but i noticed a lot of fluid around some sort of sensor (not being a car guy, i assumed that this would be unrelated to the fluid leak) I'm going to go tighten it up tomorrow morning! :)
@christopher_barr
@christopher_barr 5 лет назад
I'm glad you found this useful. You may find that the o-ring has 'gone' (i.e. been flattened and lost its elasticity). You can either buy a new pressure sensor, which comes with a new o-ring, or you can remove the sensor, fit a new o-ring and then refit this orginal sensor. Either way it should be a cheap job to fix it. Cheers, Chris 👍

5 Years later from this post... LMAO becauseI just had the same experience however the dealership wanted $2000 to replace the pump and hoses (just to be safe🤔) on our 2001 Ford Focus. They said there was a "crack in the pump". Well, we said absolutely not because I could certainly replace those components myself albeit taking a day or two. They still Upon getting it back I checked it out the next day. I started it up, looked around for the leak (it was pretty significant) and saw it was coming out from the pressure switch ! There's a huge difference between changing out a pressure switch and replacing the pump and hoses in that you don't have to take off the belt and pulley ! Anyway, I'm going down to get the parts and (hopefully) repair the issue for under $100 (boy the parts have gone up in 5 years since this video😵‍💫). The crappy thing is that my family has been going to this certified Ford dealership for about 30 years. We started to notice some shady behavior last year when we had an emissions sensor fixed and also some radiator hoses at a later time. They billed us for hours of work when we knew it took 1/2 as much time. Plus they marked up the parts 100%. Anyway, thanks for the affirmation 5 years later! Update: I just replaced the sensor🥳. It was hard to get at but within 15 minutes I got it out. The placement in my Focus doesn't allow for easy wrench access so I had to do 1/16 turns to loosen it. Once I did it came out no problem. Once replaced I filled up the reservoir with some fluid + Bars Power Steering Repair (to be safe) started it up and... no leaks as of yet! I have bleed all the air out of the line but imagine that: $60 vs $2000. If I had a lift I could have replaced it in literally 2 minutes. I'll give it a few runs after I get the air out and see if anything else leaks but rest assured I will be speaking with the service manager about their incorrect diagnosis and getting back our $180 diagnosis fee😡

Good advice Chris. Always do a sense check on what the garage advises. They always want a simple job and guaranteed money - who doesn't? I think the stop leak will struggle with the split in my Saabs power steering pipe - which is positioned just where all the salt and grit gets through from the road in front of the radiator! It just split, giving the front of my car a CHF shower. Now trying to work a fix that is less than the new hose at £250.

@christopher_barr 7 лет назад
+Alan Campbell +Alan Campbell Hi Alan, I'll reply straight away as it sounds like you're in the middle of the job... I actually really don't remember the size of the spanner and the car is in the UK so I can't check (I'm in Italy). You can check the size of it by looking at the new switch then once you're sure you've got the right size you may find making a 'special tool' by heating the spanner red hot then bending it in a vice (15 degrees maybe) might help you access the pressure switch. I didn't have to do this but your model car may have more components in the way and, if you want to avoid taking more of the car apart, this special tool option might help you out. Happy fixing! Cheers, Chris 👍
