How to fix a slow fan

Is your floor or stand fan turning really slowly? Fixing it might be as simple as adding some oil to the bearings inside.
If your fan blade spins freely but is still slow moving, most likely the capacitor needs replacing.
Since I couldn't tear down this fan as far as I wanted, I was only able to apply oil from one side of the bearings. I assume it will eventually get into the same spots regardless. I took off the rear gearbox which handles the oscillating feature, to get access to the back bearing.
I used a generic 4-in-1 oil from the hardware shop and it got the fan spinning as good as new.
Yes, the fan blade is dusty :P

Man, you just helped me save a fan. I woke up a couple of nights ago drenched in sweat because my fan was just standing there motionless with an attitude like, 'what?' I'm besides myself with pure bliss right now - sterling advice which just so happened to work for this gal - WD40 was my weapon of choice! At the time of writing, the UK was basking in near-tropical conditions and you couldn't buy a replacement fan for love nor money without remortgaging the house. Of course, I jest but my 'thank you' is heart-felt!

Exactly pal. People just throw a lot things because they have no idea how they work and can't prevent breaking those things. Best prevention for them is just buy new one, specially lazy people do it, or just they who don't have much free time to, prefer just spent it on rest after hard work.

This video helped me figure out why the frick my fan wasn't spinning fast. I couldn't get it disassembled too far because I didn't have a screwdriver handy, but as soon as I got the front cover off I immediately noticed that the blades were absolutely CAKED in dust. Lysol wipes helped that out. Then I noticed that the spindle thingy where the blades are attached to, had some sort of hair tangled all over it. Not sure how it got there but it's been there for a while since it was able to ravel itself deep into the fan. Started spinning the blades backwards slowly while breaking and pulling out the hair strands, and lysol-wiped the spindle just in case, and my fan magically came back to life. A clean fan is a happy fan. :)

Thank YOU! I have this awesome window fan my mom got me 2 years ago.. recently it started to sound bad. Well, this morning I was woken up at 3am to what sounded like a bird being killed in my window. Figured it just needed a good cleaning, so I took the fan apart, cleaned every bit of it (minus the motor), put it back together and the squeaking has stopped, but the fan is barely moving. It's now 5:30 am and I just wondered if maybe it needed some lube. Came online to see if anyone else had run into this issue and sure enough! I'm about to lube this sucker up and go back to bed. If this doesn't work, I'll come back and delete my comment, but if you are reading this, it worked a charm! Thanks buddy!! 👌

THANK YOU SO MUCH YOU'RE A GENIUS . My dad was only spraying the front part of the fan and it didn't fix it at all, i told him to spray the back part as well and manually turning it around to make it less stiff and now it works like normal!!! THANK YOU AGAIN

So a tip for the lubricant: Use one meant for small motors, not the generic stuff. 3-in-1 is the go-to for most people but the regular formulation can actually thicken up and get gunky over time with motors and you'll end up back at this stage again. They have a formulation specifically for small engine/motors that's thinner and doesn't thicken up with age/use and is perfect for this kind of use. I had a large metal fan that started to squeal and dripping some down the shaft into the bearing compartment and letting it sit facing up horizontally for a bit to let it work its way in, and it was back to normal in no time. Use the right stuff at the beginning will save you from having to redo it again over and over.

This is very true, mine stopped working and all I had access to was cooking oil. It lasted a few days and then stopped again until I got the proper oil, its been 2 months without problems

Dude you are life saver. I was nearly buying a new fan and unfortunately the store didn’t have it. So looked at your video, opened the fan, clean the dust and dirt, oiled the main bit where it spins, and viola the fan not only started spinning like new but also solved the issue with the nasty sound it was making due to too much friction which the oil smoothen it out.

I had put oil in my fan and couldn't get it to work, ready to put it to the curb, but you pointed out the axle in the back, which is hidden on my fan. I was able to squirt through a little hole to get it there and it works now! Thank you!! PS I think I'm going to try some preventative oil on the rest of my fans. 🤣

Glad that turned out well with a little bit of oil. But be very careful, i've red across the net that sometimes it's the broken capacitor that makes it slow down, that would be dangerous if it isn't get replaced asap.

One thing I did was lay the fan down after I took it apart so the fan shaft was pointing upward. I added some oil near and on the shaft, turned it a few times, let it sit for an hour to let the oil slip downward. I did this three times, each time letting it sit. This worked great as it's spinning fast and silently like new.

Anyone who has older fans 20 plus years should try to keep them running. The new cheap crap that is available now, comes almost dead out of the box. Nowhere near the build quality of yesteryear

some companies still sell fans today that are durable. They are just really rare to come by! We have a desk fan that has been running for over a decade now only part that needed replacement was the starting capacitor.

@Adolf Hitler Hey, funny thing is, many fans of yesteryear are actually very efficient. I have an old Westinghouse box fan that uses a 1.3 amp motor. Only 0.3 amps higher than modern Lasko box fan motors. Which one is better for the environment? A fan that lasts a lifetime with minimal service? Or some cheap fan that blows less air and breaks after a year? I also have a vintage Lasko table fan with clear amber blades that runs on 0.43 amps. LESS THAN MODERN TABLE FANS!!! And it performs better! Still runs to this day after over 40 years.

Hmm, ima get that kind of oil on the store, I think this is the same as my problem, I first thought the capacitor might be the problem, but before proceeding to the capacitor, I might give this a try first. Thanks for your vid man!

Wow , i must really thank you , somehow my 10 years old table fan doesn't want to move , only very very slightly rotating after being idle for a few days. I gave it a manual spin a few times and turn it on , it worked now , i thought it finally died!

This worked! I just un clipped the fan cover off, took a paper towel lightly dipped in some vegetable oil and lubricated the parts. Turned my fan on and it worked like brand new!!!

Today I looked for my answer to fixing a slow moving fan that I'd tweeted about 6 months ago but couldn't find it. Anyway, the same fan started slowing down a couple weeks ago. I took it apart again and sprayed W2 40 on it again and IT'S WORKING again AS IF IT'S A NEW FAN. SATISFACTION PEOPLE!!!

re-oil near the bushing once a month together with cleaning removable parts will help to extend service life. look out for the starting capacitor cause thats the 2nd thing get bad causes the e-fan wont turn. nice vid!

some method i do. :) got a fan almost a decade old still running. Although based on how often i need to do this. I think the bearings are dying. Yes bearings, you cant find fans with bearings now a days, just bushings.

Hey. It works to my e-fan. I clean it all and put some wd40 then its spinning is really high as new. But when i turned it on and the spinning starts it being noisy. What should i do?

I have fixed tonnes of fans. Oiling fans after they seize is a temporary fix it will seize again not to long down the road even if you take apart and clean everything. Fan needs new bushings or better yet converted to ball bearings that works excellent better that when they are new.

How do I know if it's the capacitor? My fan just started starting very slow after a power cut. It was a planned maintenance outage. It takes a good few minutes before it's back up to normal speed. When off, blades rotate very freely. It's my only cooling atm and it's 40°C (104°F) during the day. :/ Really don't want it to die

My fan does not spin at all. Foes not even make a sound when you turn it on. Maybe some loose connection somewhere but dont know where. I have oiled all parts and cleaned the rust, so the fan blades are free to move. Any help?

Hey! Just a tip that worked with my fan since it was going slow on the highest setting, put your fan on a high setting and keep it running for a couple a minutes or until it spins the way it’s supposed to. Hope this helps!

Yep those bronze bushings need regular oiling and sometimes disassembly and cleaning. When you do have it apart look for the oil wick in the bushing housing and add plenty of oil to it. It holds oil close to the bushing and sometimes the wick breaks down so add more wicking agent, (something that holds oil) for longer service intervals in future. I use oil lamp wicking which is an everyday thing here in India! Good luck!

This is only a temporary fix. The oil burns off and you're back to square one, at least from my experience. I've tried oiling fans with both petroleum distillate and 3-in-1 oil, only for them to seize up after a week of use; sometimes even less. I'm thinking I should try something more heavy duty, like an industrial lubricant.

After using shaving oil, my fan kept on spinning for one and a half minutes, after going from high speed to the off position. WAHL OIL is the standard in the clipper cutting industry, and it works for me.

Im in real problem i removed the back case also the ossilator knob its iron ball fell and i dont how to put it back correctly. I just put the ball with the spring inside that holein the knob but the fan wont rotate sideways because it not stiff as beforei can send photos from email please help.

Do you know what the difference is between fans with wide blades like yours and the newer models with narrow blades (called banana blades)?

I think the wide blades move more air but are noisier than the thin blades. I'm not 100% sure but I think that's it.

Okay I have a question, I hope someone can answer me. I have a 1980’s Tatung Fan and I’ve been using a lot lately. Today I just noticed that the fan was moving a lot slower. The sound it was making was also different. The spin down time is non existent. Does it need lubrication? Or is the capacitor dying? One other thing I noticed is that it has a hard time starting up.

Demos Pro always assume that it’s lube, these older Taiwanese fans are very well built, and even if it is a bad capacitor, it is well worth replacing the capacitor rather than buying a modern fan which will usually only last 5 years before burning up. This guy didn’t show it in the video, but you should repack the old oscillator gearbox with new white lithium grease. As the old grease is likely very dried up. Remember to always use either zoom spout oil or 3 in 1 in the blue can (do not use 3 in 1 in the red can) for the bearings. And for the gearbox any automotive grease should work fine

Bikerjon1 why should he buy a new one? This one has lasted 30 years likely without any lubrication (excluding the lube from the factory.) I doubt you can find any reasonably priced modern fan that can survive that long.

Just wanted to point out that Lithium grease is generally recommended for electric motors, but ehh it's just a cheap fan so doesn't matter much.

Not entirely sure, I've only looked up how to apply it on electric dryer motors, as I we were having issues with our dryer once, but I did use just a few drops of all-in-one oil around to bearings to see if it would help, it didn't... Since I didn't have bearing puller in order to remove them and find a replacement, we found another motor for just $50, it's been good as new ever since.
