How To Fix A Stapler That Doesn't Work-Easy Instructions

Here's tip #6 to try if none of the above work: My problem was the stapler would staple once, and then wouldn't work a second time until you opened it back up. What I figured out was that my stapler was not properly resetting itself after discharging the 1st staple, because the parts started to stick together. To fix this problem, open the metal top part of the stapler. You want to open it wide, so you can access both the upper metal top, and the part it slides into where the staples live when you close it up. Be careful not to let the spring snap the top part back onto your fingers! Your stapler can bite! Oil lightly both the outside of the top metal rim, and the inside of the lower section, with something like Tri-Flow. Try more oil if you only notice a slight improvement. I was ready to toss my Swingline in the trash until I tried this!

I found the areas you described were not my problem for my 444 Swingline stapler. So I looked further. Looking through the lower half of the stapler that feeds staples, there was a particle blocking the proper staple feed right at the end of the slide, actually in the end. I used a paper clip bent into a wire to force out the particle. It could have been rust since this 444 is an old stapler. Anyway, pushing that wire against the particle eventually cleared it out and the stapler works again. Still, I found your video helpful to troubleshoot and fix my vintage stapler. BTW: I rebent that paper clip into its near original shape and returned it to my clip box. Waste not, want not! - Jersey Mike

Thank you, the first tip worked for me, there were staples stuck and I didn't notice but used a metal tool to pop them out. Pen didn't work for me.
