Hi Rob. I have the same starter as this one. I have been searching for a video on how to service this bad boy and therefore found your video incredibly informative and a life saver (for my starter that is). Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us out here. I will definitely be following your channel. Stay safe bro.

Valeo 2.1kw starter for Renault master 2006 2.5dci, g9u engine. Left hand drive. Update, got the starter out, bloody thing had fused to the bellhousing! (no video mentioned this as a possibility!) Took me 8 hours to get it out. I opted for a hammer and a flat head screwdriver as a wedge and gently prayed it open. Upon first bench test the bendix shafts had a film of dirt and old dried lubricant, so did the copper cylinder that Controlls the plastic pulley arm (sorry don't know the proper name) and they were very stiff, the bendix wouldn't spin freely or reset in its proper hole, it would stay half way out. they all got a good clean with isopropyl alcohol, then lubed up with white lithium grease. Unfortunatly I could not get to the planet gears. Unlike yours, mine had a riveted metal plate covering them. Neither could I get the bendix gear off, since the "stopper" on the shaft was covered with a metal ring. I opted to just clean it as much as I could. Now it moves freely ! The brushes did not look worn at all, so I left them as is. The design was different from yours, mine didn't just slide out. I put it all back together, did another bench test and everything seems to work as it should. I will apply some copper paste where the starter meets the bellhousing so I don't have to go through prying it off again. Now to get the thing back in the van and see if she starts! Your video was a huge help! Update 2. Didn't work, bought a new bendix gear and changed it, now it works as it should. It was slipping before, even though it felt as is it was stopping. The torque of your hand isn't enough to make it slip.

Great video, very detailed step by step instructions. I was curious if you noticed if the planetary gear had any lubrication from the factory? My starter has a squeal after start up and have seen some other videos of people greasing the planetary gear to resolve this. I am debating if I should grease or just clean? Some other people have posted worn bushing next to the flywheel and possibly the bendix. Your video will be helpful in the teardown and rebuild. Thank you.
@sirobb
@sirobb 7 лет назад
Johnny Woo You're welcome. 👍 I think your squeal is the starter clutch next to the pinion. It can be caused by the release mechanism sticking so the pinion remains engaged in the flywheel and is briefly driven by the engine before disengaging. If it is this, it will be cured by simple cleaning as shown in my videos. Good luck.

Thank you for these videos; I'm about to do my first starter motor rebuild and these videos are very helpful. Questions for you: --Why such little lubrication in the planetary gearbox? You used only a few drops of lubricant in the gearbox, a number of other online guides suggest more thorough greasing. --Why so much grease around the bearing? Isn't it a sealed bearing? TIA.
@sirobb
@sirobb 5 лет назад
The 3 planetary gears have an internal bearing already so don't really need lots of lubrication. If want to grease more where they interact with the outer gear, of course that's up to you. Which heavily greased bearing are you referring to? Or do you mean the bushing at the end of the starter?
@zrazieli
@zrazieli 5 лет назад
@@sirobb Thanks. Yes I meant greasing the three planetary gears and outer ring gear area. My guess is that greasing there is a mixed bag between improving the lubrication but also attracting dirt/sand/contamination. I simply don't have the experience or knowledge to know which is a bigger factor. For my second question, yes I meant the grease you apply at the end of the starter around 7:00 in the video -- is that just a bushing, not a sealed roller bearing? If so then I understand the grease. If I'm using the wrong terms, please correct me.

I watched these videos trying to get ideas on what to use to clean and relubricate the starter. You did a great job getting everything cleaned, and then put those nice shiny parts on the ground without a tarp or any cover. You can see leaves and other debris right there. It may not have been dirty enough to prevent the rebuilt from working but there was most likely some debris introduced into the starter. I did get some ideas about what to use for cleaning however so thanks. Also, you did a good job of explaining how to do it. I think I will go to brake cleaner for the non-electrical parts as I do not have diesel fuel on hand. As for lubrication, I have spray white lithium grease, dielectric grease, WD-40, silicone spray and some now defunct Dura Lube in a pump can.

Everything was clean on rebuilding and infinitely cleaner than not doing the job at all. This video is over 3 years old and and starter still works perfectly.

Lovely detailed pair of videos... I feel a little more grease in the planetary gearbox would've been worthwhile though.

Is it posibel to disabel the bendix mechanism? Ore reverse the bendix direction? I need badly disel starter motor with gear reduction . I managed to reverse direction for starter motor but me engine turns oposite direction ore to be precisely the disel starter has counter grewes drilled and the pinion spins in oposite direction. So any help please? I have same starter motor as you but I try to fit it to opel starter motor evry thing is the same but only problem I have is the clutch direction the bendix has oposite grewes drilled .

Did you guys soak the planetary gears in diesel? They have internal bearings. Also the aluminum "base" of the starter has a little internal bearing. I wonder about the impact of diesel on these bearings... Thanks

Is it possible to just use one or 2 lubricants? Im on a limited budget, getting all the different greases for just a puff will be 40 quid! If you had to recommend just one or 2, what ones would you get?
@sirobb
@sirobb 5 лет назад
If I was limited to one, I'd say the most versatile is white lithium spray grease.

@@sirobb great, thank you! is there anywhere particular you would NOT use it? Silly question, but is there a difference between white li spray and just li spray? my bendix gear is sticking on the shaft, making it not engage with the flywheel. would the white lithium spray be good for the shaft? im about to disassemble the whole thing following your video and give everything a good clean. ill use clipper oil for the planetary gears inside.
@sirobb
@sirobb 5 лет назад
@@timothy790110 I wasn't aware of more than one type of lithium grease so the short answer is I don't. Your plan for a strip down and clean should give you positive results regardless though so good luck.

@@sirobb cheers rob, just here in Sweden some cans say "lithium grease" and omit the "white" but im sure its the same thing! and the lithium spray grease would be good for the shaft then!

@@sale626 Ok, so I took the time to watch the video. That noise is caused by the pinion not disengaging quickly enough so it is being driven overspeed by the flywheel for a short period of time before disengaging. I suspect that disassembly of the starter and a general clean freed up the pinion release mechanism although not completely as you can still hear (a reduced) overrun screech from the starter's one way clutch at the end of the video. They could have eliminated the noise by concentrating their efforts on cleaning all of the pivoting parts of the throw out mechanism. The noise is certainly nothing to do with the planetary gears needing grease as the noise was not eliminated despite the grease being applied. Finally, rather than removing and cleaning the gears as I've shown in my videos, they add grease on top of already dirty components which would trap the dirt further. That video highlights why I do my own maintenance rather than relying on others.
@sale626
@sale626 3 года назад
@@sirobb I agree with you.. although, some grease on planetary gears wouldn't do any harm.. they are moving parts finally.. I will try to solve problem by your way.. p.s. Do you think its ok to use brake cleaner for cleaning all that moving parts inside (i dont have this electric contact cleaner which you use)? I have a silicone spray and machine oil for "greasing"..
