PROCESS:
Firstly I dismantled the starter completely. I then sent most of the parts to the very handy parts washer which removed all dirt, grease or oil. I then made sure they were completely dry before taking them to the blasting cabinet for blasting. As for the internal parts, I cleaned them by hand with contact cleaner. I then prepared the outer parts for painting by degreasing and masking. Once hanging in the paint room, I hit them with two light coats of etching primer, two coats of high-build primer and sanded that back with 400 and 800g sandpaper. I then applied two coats of base coat before two coats of lacquer.
Whilst that was drying I set about polishing the solenoid 'thing' and all the other small internal pieces. This was in preparation for the electroplating that came next. Whilst I waited for paint and passivate to dry I made a start on the motor brushes. They were all quite worn and uneven. I bought four brushes that were as close to what I needed but a little bit bigger. I could then resize them to the perfect size. I had trouble finding the correct sized brushes.
I removed the old brushes with heat and pulling power, die grinder the old spot well off and solder on the new brushes ensuring the solder was super solid before continuing. Controversial I know. But I do not have a spot welder. I then opened my starter motor repair kit, found the pieces I could swap out and it was time to reassemble.
Once back together I attached the positive end of a car battery to the continuous live on the stater and the negative to the metal body. I then joined the live 12v to the ignition terminal and the starter both span the motor and moved the solenoid forward. Restoration complete.

Nicely done. A few comments. Put some grease in the black cap held in with 2 screws on the motor case, that will keep the bronze bearing lubed and hopefully most of the water out. Try some aluminium tape for masking off for bead blasting. The pause after the brush block pushed out was classic, silence can say a lot. Loved your use of the strainer to hold parts in the bead blaster and the socket as a spacer on the brush block. Have you thought about doing a video or 2 on the care and feeding of spray guns and how to set them up to spray correctly? You know what the various bleed screws do and how to avoid runs etc. Hope you had a great Christmas and have a happy new year. Cheers.

Thank you dhc, love this comment. Thanks for the advice. The aluminium tape idea is great. And i actually have some. Wish i used it now. The brushes were frustrating to say the least haha. And good idea on the spray gun how to. You can expect to see this in the near future.

Coming from me, a guy who rebuilds starters and alternators for a living, well done. couple things I will point out is that you should of removed the paint from around where the negative brushes touch the back plate. you do want to make sure the negatives had a good ground with the front housing of the starter. the whole back plate assembly along with armature and brush holder could have been assembled before putting the armature into the starter body. This goes for all bosch made starters. I did have a good chuckle when I saw the armature shoot into the body lol. all in all very well done keep up the great videos!
@RestoreIt
@RestoreIt 5 лет назад
Thank you Joshua, nice to hear this from a professional. Thanks for the advice, i'll be going back inside to sort a few things out. This will be one of them.
@mercer982
@mercer982 5 лет назад
Josh. I have an bosch starter in my vw and if im not mistaken it's the very same starter. The problem with it is that the bendix doesn't seem to back up from the fly wheel quick enough so it oftem makes this howling noise... is this something i can fix just by cleaning it? I've heard that in atleast 70% of the cases "bad starter motor" is actually just a dirty one that needs some cleaning in order to work properly. Those bosch ones especially, they are well build starters.
@JoshuaRichardHancock
@JoshuaRichardHancock 5 лет назад
Mercer Frey what happens with a Volkswagen Bosch starter is the the bendix gear is a shaft that drives through a bushing on the front housing of the starter. A lot of the time this is caused by the bushing drying out of its self lubricants. Greasing up the Bendix shaft should fix your issue. If you activate the starter solenoid without activating the motor you can grease the shaft easily. Hopefully this fixes your issue. The starter will make a howling noise after engaging the flywheel. This is why.
@mercer982
@mercer982 5 лет назад
Thank you for your reply! I really hope i'm not too late for the sake of my flywheel.

I applaud the effort you put into disassembling, cleaning and painting the E30 components featured in these videos but find it altogether abhorrent you characterize what you're doing as restoration. I suspect those that "disliked" the video share a similar sentiment. With the level of incorrect finishes showcased, crude disassembly, incorrect reassembly of components, and general lack of attention to details that go into an accurate restoration... i find myself annoyed by the use of the word. Keep honing your skills and improving your techniques, the work you're doing is perfectly admirable under a different descriptor. Oh, and please stop painting aluminum silver.

Great rebuild! The brushes were mechanically fastened because starter motors can get hot enough to melt the copper [and solder]. In saying also super turned off but some of the part restorations as some of 'em seem like really challenging tasks; provided I dont have a workshop to do the work in. Stripped motor down and sending parts to engineers now, hopefully all is well. First time doing this much work on a car do learning every turn of a spanner. Really enjoying it and will keep learning from you here. Really grat stuff. I just wish I could consult with you more lol. Some of this stuff isn't so easy and get stuck quite regularly. Паять щетки в автомобильных стартерах нельзя, только контактная сварки или прикручивать. Слишком большие токи проходят по проводникам это ведет их к большому прогреву, отпаяется очень быстро.
@HUBBABUBBADOOPYDOOP
@HUBBABUBBADOOPYDOOP 5 лет назад
That's why the brushes are attached by copper braid. It's usually used for _desoldering_ and it holds up to current quite well at that short distance. Поэтому щетки крепятся медной оплеткой.Обычно он используется для _desoldering_ и он поддерживаеттока довольно хорошо на таком коротком расстоянии.
@NORMOkPlay
@NORMOkPlay 5 лет назад

In my Lada 1975 release is identical to the starter. Although some of the details I would advise to replace a new one ( starter relay, rotor hub ) very interesting video. I look with pleasure . Greetings from Russia

After we saw Chip Foose, we all know, it needs only 3 days to restore a car. Now, this is the hard way. The way that really works. Needs a long time, and hard work. And is not real cheaper than new parts. But at the end, you have done it yourself. And you know, it´s done right. And, not to forget, you have a car, which is better than new. Well done.

Excellent video. A+++. Was expecting a disassembly and cleaning job and little else. Electroplating, proper paint, new motor brushes and ancillary hardware, great attention to detail. Final product looks glorious.

Really good restoration! You have really improved your soldering techniques and tools, cheers! Also, I'm thinking about buying an e30 to fix it somewhat like this but I'm not sure about how much work and money would I spend on a project like this, what do you recommend?
@RestoreIt
@RestoreIt 5 лет назад
Thank you Juan! Depending on how bad of a car you start with will depend on money. But in all seriousness for a full restoration like this you are looking at 20k plus not including time or tools. Great fun, very stressful at times, but well worth it in the end (i'm sure)

I restored a E36 starter once. It really sucked. I did everything from the top of the car, and I swear the second I finished everything my girlfriend is like hey you sure you don't need this little ring? It was the ring you see at 4:13 and I had to take everything apart again. The part worked great after rebuilding it though. I had a original BMW kit for the work. Aren't there any available for the E30?

(15:45) - Fantastic restoration but I think you might have put one of those brushes in the wrong way round. That one on the right looks much shorter than the others. Maybe it's just the camera angle? What do you think? Great video anyway. Thumbs up from this subscriber.
