Floor drains can be a cause of sewer gas odor in your home. Priming the trap seal and cleaning the floor drain riser can help resolve the unwanted sewer gas smell.

You are a life saver. Our drain backed up due to a clog and raw sewage came up, my landlord had it snaked and what a mess it left behind. The smell was horrific!!! I followed your method and my home smells fresh and clean once again. Thanks for posting this.💓💓👏🏻👏🏻

Hey, I just wanted to thank you. I have a moderate knowledge of plumbing and after ensuring the trap was primed, we still had odor when we used the kitchen sink. I tried so many things, but finally came across your video - the second suggestion was extremely helpful. Moral of the story - used a toilet brush and some cleaner on our floor drain - worked like a charm, odor gone.

Thank you for this! I ended up discovering that there was big objects in my drain somehow.. found a nice chunk of brick, a extension bit for a drill and wood chunks, among hair and stuff. Had to use the shop vac to pull them up but now i have nothing but peace of mind and a clean drain! Thanks again!

I still have that smell but we don’t have a floor drain. The smell seems to go away in just a couple of hours after washing cleaner in a laundry rinse mode. However, the washing machine itself never smells. Why?

The floor drain next to my washer in my apartment stinks a lot. The maintenance people poured down some detergent and water down the drain, as well as the drain for the washer. But I still get that awful smell. The smell goes away whenever I do a load of laundry, but after a short while the smell comes back again. Is there anything else I can try? Thank you very much.

Hey nice vid, just did a basement reno and there is a drain under my bed (no longer in use due to a furnace relocation. I primed the one in my bedroom and it started to smell real bad, took a flashlight and was shining it down there and I saw sludgey water only on the surface of the water. I'm thinking maybe I should clean it with a toilet brush and toilet bowl cleaner. I can run a garden hose to flush out all the bad water and hopefully that will make the bad smell go away when I prime it again.

Thanks @shadow212121kb! I'm sure the flushing and giving it a bit of a clean will do the trick. Thanks for the comment! All the Best!

I notice that mine has some standing water in there. Is it supposed to be like that?

Same question, I’m pretty sure the standing water is the smell issues I’m having.. but not sure if that’s the way it’s suppose to be…

I have floor drain in my basement and there's gunk in it and it smell really bad only when you come near the drainage. First time I poured water, the gunk in the drainage rose and then it went down again. But the smell and gunk still remains. What do you think I should do to get rid of gunk? Also, I poured hot water, is this fine? It got rid of sewer flies though.

Mine looks like the water is slightly brown and stinks. Is it sewer water backing up into the floor drain? It never backs up onto the floor or anything , the trap just has gross looking water. I poor a 5 gallon bucket down it to clean it out but the it's dirty again in a week. Any ideas? When i flush it out i get alot of sewer gas smell but I'm assuming that would be normal.
@PROSDIY
@PROSDIY 5 лет назад
Hi Goose14, My best guess would be either a slight sewer backup or back graded drainage. Sometimes if the drainage has a slight blockage it will travel back into the floor drain. I would test this by first running your 5 gallons of clean water into the floor drain. Then running the washing machine and flushing the toilets while watching the floor drain. The water level in the floor drain should go slightly up and down but you shouldn't see any discoloration or smell sewer gas. If you do I would have the drain augured, flushed, and scooped. If you have back graded pipes they would have to be dug up and corrected. Best of luck and thank you for the question!

I pour water into the trapm the smell goes away but comes back in a day or two. I can't figure out why.
@PROSDIY
@PROSDIY 4 года назад
Hi Jeese, The first thing I would check is the sewer pipes and venting for a blockage. If there's a restriction in the drain/vent line it might cause a small amount of sewer water to come back and mix with the floor drain trap water. You can test this by inspecting the water in the floor drain and having someone run a bunch of water at the same time. Flushing toilets and running the washing machine works best. The water level in the floor drain should slightly move up and down, but not greatly. If it rises quite high, then I'd have the drain lines augered and scoped. Let me know how it goes. Good Luck!

Ok i work in a small school as a custodian..im the only cleaner custodian..i have 3 main bathrooms for the kids to use..only one of bathrooms has a nasty stench to it..i know its from the floor drain because I use a super highly concentrated air deodorizer n pour it down the drain..its made by the company MARC.. its the Caribbean sea salt odor nuetralizer..it wipes out the nasty smell but only temporarily ( like a matter of hours) ..ive tried more than a dozen times the baking soda n vinegar trick n its done nothing.n e other ideS

My basement traps get an odor from time to time.When it rains I get a really strong foul odor that comes into my house.
@PROSDIY
@PROSDIY 4 года назад
Hi Derrick. Do you have an older home? Some older homes have the weeping tile tied into the sewer drain. So when it rains the ground water around the house gets directed into the sewer line. If it's enough rain water the drain can get overwhelmed and slightly backup into the home. Do the floor drains ever backup? If you're getting a slight backup, adding a backwater valve can fix this and the odor issue. It's a large check valve for the sewer line.

Will brushing work with a musty, mildew smell? We tried the baking soda, vinegar, and flushing with gallons of water but no luck. We did not scrub with a brush. Thinking we might need to replace the drain cover too. It’s old and rusty.
@PROSDIY
@PROSDIY 3 года назад
The brushing can help, especially if it is cast iron drainage. I would try the brushing and replacing or soaking the drain cover overnight as well.

@@PROSDIY thank you! I have an older home and assuming mines cast iron because it’s very rusty…very smelly. I just bought the house n have never dealt with this. Is the recommendation to clean the same on this kind of pipe? I can’t even see the bottom 😬

I don't understand what the hell is going on anymore. 45 years of buying various houses and NEVER had this problem in any other place. My Grandparents, my parents, all the way back... NO ONE has EVER scrubbed out a floor drain. It wouldn't even occur to them. If there's a smell, something wasn't done right nor needs to be fixed. Also, NEVER in any other houses have I seen water inside of a basement drain until this house. So something isn't right there, either.

Everybody is saying the same thing. Pour water into the p trap. Nobody has explained why the water keeps evaporating.
